Abandoned Coral World, in Nassau, Bahamas
The black and white photographic print features an unusual abandoned sea tower on Silver Cay. From a distance, one might think that the weird steel structure might be a communication tower or lighthouse, but it's what is left abandoned of Coral Island, aka Coral World, in Nassau, Bahamas.
Coral World Bahamas is a combination aquarium and beach resort that opened in 1987. The facility quickly became one of the most popular attractions in Nassau. Its signature lighthouse-like tower observatory was built on an artificial island linked to the mainland of Nassau via an elevated causeway. The tower structure was also an underwater viewing area, shark, turtle, and stingray pools, and it even offered a museum.
Coral World suffered severe damage from the massive Hurricane Floyd in 1999. Although the UFO-like tower remains an easily recognizable landmark, the hurricane caused tremendous and severe damage, forcing the closure of the marine park. It has since been abandoned and forgotten.
