Tractor buried in ash at whalers bay inside of the caldera at Deception Island, South Shetland Islands
The history of Deception Island is fascinating. It started in 1908 when the British claimed Deception Island in Antarctica and subsequently licensed a Norwegian firm to create a commercial whaling station. However, the whaling operation was abandoned and closed in 1931, and Britain destroyed the entire base, fearing the Germans would use the location as a U-Boat base.
Numerous volcanic eruptions in the decades that followed have buried much of the base. In this fine art photograph, all that remains are the metal-rusted skeletal remains of an old tractor.
