Streets of Derry Northern Ireland
At the heart of the Bogg district in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland, the tragic events took place on that Sunday, 30th January 1972. This urban travel photograph features a group of apartment buildings. Two of the building have large murals painted on the wall. These murals feature paintings that pay tribute to and memorialize the events of Sunday bloody Sunday.
Corner Neighbourhood in Londonderry
Since the peace accord dubbed Good Friday Agreement or Belfast Agreement, the British troops and barricades have been removed from this symbolic hotspot shown in this photo. Numerous large murals have been created memorializing the fallen on that fateful day so long ago. The neighborhood is now quiet, with neatly manicured hedges and lawns. But I talked to a gentleman repainting a Free Derry memorial sign. He was only too eager to recap the events and point out the locations in that central district where military posts stood for half a century. The murals depict protestors with gas masks and loud blow horns.
