Colorful Tibetan prayer flags background
This travel background photograph features colorful Tibetan prayer flags flying at a Buddhist stupa.
What are Tibetan Prayer Flags?
A Tibetan prayer flag is a colorful rectangular cloth steeped in the Buddhist tradition. The flags are found strung along trails and peaks high in the mountains. Tibetans believe that by placing the flags in the surrounding countryside, the wind will spread goodwill and positive energy wherever they go, this blessing the surrounding area.
The flag's colors are vibrant and have significant meaning to Tibetan Buddhists. Each color represents the five elements (sky, air, fire, water, and earth). Together the five colors signify balance. The flags are always arranged in a specific order, from left to right: blue (sky), white (air), red (fire), green (water), and yellow (earth).
