Broken panes have been covered with mismatched pieces of wood. Sections of the wall have fallen away completely, exposing bricks and rough construction underneath. Nothing quite lines up anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the wall straight on because I didn't want perspective to distract from those textures. The entire frame becomes a collection of surfaces: old glass, splintered boards, crumbling plaster, brick, faded paint and weathered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something about Havana's aging architecture that I find endlessly photographic. I don't see decay simply as deterioration. I see layers. Repairs are made, paint is added and disappears, windows are patched rather than replaced, and the building continues to change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005. At first the scene seems overwhelmingly blue, but the closer I looked, the more colors began to emerge. Violet and faded red remain in the door. Pale markings and scratched graffiti wander across the wall. Stains run vertically through the surface, while patches of old paint reveal layer after layer underneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is that tiny plant growing directly beneath the doorway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love details like that. Against this massive, scarred surface, a few green leaves introduce something alive and temporary. The door itself feels almost absorbed into the wall, as though both have been aging together for decades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene straight on because I wanted very little interpretation between me and what I had found. The wall becomes the composition. Texture, color, scratches, stains and imperfections become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing India so much. Extraordinary photographs don't always announce themselves. The peeling paint is immediately visible, but the interior takes longer to read. Reflections across the glass mingle with the curtains and flowers, letting the street and the room overlap without revealing everything inside. The cat gives that layered scene a living presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing was arranged for the camera. I stopped to observe what was already there, keeping the window and the surrounding wall together in the composition. Colour is essential to the result: the warm yellow exterior, cool reflections above and flowers below make each part distinct. Beneath it, an old radiator sits close to the wall, while the chair occupies a brighter patch farther into the space. Around those recognisable objects, broken material gathers on the floor and larger areas of plaster have fallen away. I like how the light reveals the room without removing its shadows.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe composition depends on that contrast. The window is bright, the far corner dark, and the chair sits between them with a narrow outline. Exposed brick adds a regular pattern on one side, while the damaged ceiling and walls introduce rougher shapes. Those surfaces keep the eye moving through a room that otherwise feels still.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph leaves the room’s earlier life open to reflection. I wanted to record what was visible rather than supply a story for the person who might once have used it. Those interruptions create a second pattern running diagonally through the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white pushed the photograph even farther toward abstraction. Strong contrast separates the bright faces of the structure from the deep shadows between them, while the windows become narrow dark bands. From a distance, the building begins to resemble a carefully constructed graphic pattern rather than a conventional city scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eChicago has always given me plenty to work with architecturally, but I am often more interested in fragments than complete buildings. In Sighișoara, in Romania’s Transylvania region, I photographed a panelled wooden door beside a shuttered window. The sepia treatment brings their worn surfaces together with the cracked plaster, keeping the scene warm in tone even where the details are rough.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe door is taller and more formal, with inset panels that still give it a clear structure. The shutters are simpler, their weathered boards showing dark streaks and an uneven lower edge. I like having both in the same frame. Each has its own character, but they share the same quiet, closed presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBetween them, the wall is marked by scratches, small patches of missing plaster and faint writing. Those details remain secondary to the door and window, yet they give the space around the wood a lived surface. Along the bottom, a short strip of paving anchors the view at street level.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept the framing direct rather than seeking a dramatic angle. It lets the rectangles, textures and differences in height become the composition. The pale areas around the window frame also help separate it from the darker wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCaptured in 2011, this photograph is a close look at an ordinary part of Sighișoara’s streets. I am interested in how much visual character a small section of architecture can hold. Above them, dormers rise from the tiled roof in another sequence, slightly offset from the lines below.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI wanted enough space around the building to show how it sits on the waterfront. A modern structure at the left and smaller buildings to the right keep it within the city, while the short strip of water in front gives the façade a little breathing room. Its reflections are broken by ripples, softening the otherwise firm horizontal edge.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe photograph rewards both a distant and a close view. From farther away, the roof and wall read as simple shapes. Up close, the individual bricks and window surrounds become more noticeable.
