It rises, falls and bends with every ridge, disappearing into the distance only to reappear farther along the horizon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in China in 2015. Several watchtowers punctuate the wall as it travels across the rugged terrain, creating a visual rhythm that carries the eye from the foreground deep into the photograph. Beyond them, successive mountain ridges become softer and increasingly blue with distance until they almost dissolve into the hazy sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe subdued light was important. There was no dramatic sunset or brilliant colour competing with the landscape. Instead, the muted conditions allowed the shape of the mountains and the extraordinary path of the wall to become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStanding there, I was conscious of the enormous scale of what I was looking at. From a distance the Great Wall can appear almost delicate, a narrow line following the contours of the land, yet the closer sections reveal its physical weight and construction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast fascinated me. Human architecture occupies the landscape, but the mountains remain dominant. From a distance, the individual buildings almost disappear into one enormous pattern of colour, repetition and density.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat visual compression is what fascinated me. There is barely any empty space. One structure sits above another, then another, climbing relentlessly across the hillside. Most share the same deep red and brown tones, but small flashes of green, turquoise, yellow and brighter crimson appear in windows, doors and fabric, breaking up the repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scale is difficult to understand until I start looking closely. Every small rectangle is a home. Paths wind between them, buildings lean into the contours of the land, and the settlement seems to have grown organically rather than according to any simple grid.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLarung Gar sits at roughly 12,500 feet, and its isolation was part of what made being there so memorable for me. Yet photographically, I kept returning to the visual structure of the place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the frame to feel almost overwhelming—to let the homes fill it completely, without sky or distant landscape providing relief. For me, that density is the photograph. The largest formation dominates the right side of the frame, while smaller towers and fragments lead the eye across the water toward the distant mountains.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat transformed the scene for me was the light. Soft pink and orange reached the mountain peaks while cooler blues remained across the lake and lower landscape. Above everything, heavy clouds caught traces of the same pastel colour. For a few minutes, warm and cool tones existed together without either one overwhelming the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe still water was equally important. Reflections beneath the tufa formations extend their shapes downward and create a visual balance between the rugged rock and the smooth surface of Mono Lake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been attracted to landscapes that feel slightly unfamiliar, and the tufa towers give Mono Lake that quality immediately. They look sculptural, almost improbable, particularly when separated by quiet water and viewed against the mountains beyond.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph is about that combination: unusual geology, open water, distant mountains and the fleeting colour of sunrise. The landscape already had everything it needed. From there, it keeps moving into the distance, sometimes clearly defined and sometimes almost absorbed by the rocky landscape. That repetition is what holds the photograph together. Wall, tower, ridge. Then another wall, another tower, another rise.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because the scene was already largely about texture and structure. The stonework, bare vegetation and exposed rock all sit within a narrow tonal range, while the pale sky removes almost every distraction above the mountains. Without strong colour competing for attention, the shape of the Great Wall becomes much easier to follow through the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also like that the photograph does not make the terrain look gentle. The walls climb steep slopes, drop into valleys and continue across uneven ground, which gives a much stronger sense of the relationship between the architecture and the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStanding there, that was what interested me most. The Great Wall of China is immediately recognizable, but from this viewpoint it becomes something more than a landmark. A much smaller piece of ice floats nearby, giving the eye another scale to consider. I like how that small shape remains separate from the larger mass without distracting from it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe reflection adds depth beneath the surface line. It is darker than the ice itself, yet still carries enough of the shape to connect the two halves of the picture. Snowflakes interrupt the view at different distances, and the farther background fades into a quieter grey. Those changes keep the scene from feeling static despite the calm water.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph holds a meeting of stillness and changing weather. The iceberg has weight and texture, while the falling snow softens its surroundings. As wall art, it can appeal to someone drawn to Antarctica, polar landscapes or monochrome nature photography. I photographed these bare trees in Haliburton, Ontario, in 2010. The black and white image keeps the view close, with little open sky and a narrow band of water reflecting the lower parts of the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe trunks give the composition a mostly vertical structure, but the smaller branches move across them at many angles. Some lean, some break off abruptly, and others disappear into shadow. I like how the image feels dense without becoming uniform. Different thicknesses and tones let the eye separate one tree from the next.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe water adds a quieter layer along the bottom. Its reflections continue some of the upright lines while small bright areas interrupt the darker surface. Fallen wood and low branches connect that lower section with the standing trees. In monochrome, those details share the same visual language, making texture and contrast more important than colour.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph’s interest lies in looking closely at a place that might seem tangled on first glance. The bare wood reveals an intricate arrangement of marks and spaces. As wall art, it can appeal to someone drawn to Ontario nature, woodland detail or black and white photography with an abstract quality. Long bands of cloud reach outward from the glowing horizon, changing from deep red to softer pink as they rise through the frame. Beneath them, the low hills and trees form an almost continuous dark silhouette. That narrow strip of land gives the colour a firm boundary and keeps the scene grounded in the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the contrast between the expansive sky and the small details close to the water. Their pale surfaces separate them from the brown slopes, but the buildings never fill the frame. I found that keeping them low in the composition made their isolation more apparent than a close view would have done.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe foreground is uneven with small patches of scrub. Behind the plant, the mountain carries larger folds, darker ridges, and touches of snow near the higher ground. Clouds hang across the top of the image, softening the light and keeping the palette restrained. Those layers lead from nearby vegetation to the factory, then into a much larger landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2010, recording the structures as they stood within that open space. The name belongs to the company, while the place is distinctly Californian. What holds my attention is the difference between the plant’s constructed shapes and the mountain’s irregular surfaces.
