The FDR Drive sweeps through the lower half of the frame, packed with cars moving toward Lower Manhattan, while the city rises behind it in a dense wall of towers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005, and I like what that date gives the image now. The traffic, architecture and skyline capture a particular New York, but the essential character of the city feels immediately familiar—the density, movement and almost relentless vertical growth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat drew me to this viewpoint was the compression. The highway, East River, bridge structure and tightly packed buildings all seem pushed together. There is very little empty space. Even in black and white, my eye keeps moving from one detail to another: cars filling the lanes, highway signs, windows, rooftops, older towers and the rigid grid of more modern buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe FDR Drive is especially important to the photograph. Without it, this would be another New York skyline. Instead, the stream of vehicles gives the image a sense of everyday life continuing beneath all that architecture. Thousands of people are moving through the city while the enormous buildings remain fixed above them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white helps hold those competing elements together. That was what drew me to this scene—the ordinary rush of Manhattan transformed by wet pavement and darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed from the sidewalk, looking down a corridor of tall buildings toward the traffic beyond. Taxis and cars crowd the street, a city bus works its way through them, and a few pedestrians move through the foreground. Yet the people remain almost anonymous, reduced to dark silhouettes against the reflected light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat makes the photograph work for me is the depth. The repeating streetlights gradually become smaller as they disappear down the avenue, pulling my eye deep into Manhattan. Above them, scattered office windows punctuate the darkness. Below, the wet sidewalk carries that light back toward the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white strips away the competing colors of New York and concentrates everything on light, shadow, movement and reflection. The brightest headlights become almost white against the surrounding darkness, while large portions of the buildings disappear into deep shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always enjoyed photographing cities after rain. Familiar streets become more cinematic, but nothing about the moment needs to be staged. Instead of everyone rushing through one of the busiest places in Manhattan, people simply sat down.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is crowded, but it doesn't feel frantic. People lounge in folding chairs, talk, watch the street or simply sit by themselves. Behind them is unmistakable Times Square—yellow taxis, pedestrians, construction equipment, traffic lights, towering buildings and an almost absurd concentration of signs and advertising. Even the New York Police Department station is buried within the visual chaos.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like photographs where there isn't necessarily one person who is the subject. Here, the people collectively become the subject. My eye can wander around the frame and discover dozens of small moments happening simultaneously.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph also has a personal connection for me. Later, during a workshop with legendary New York photographer Jay Maisel, I showed him this image. He stopped on it and commented on the uniqueness of the moment. That stayed with me because uniqueness is exactly what had made me raise my camera in the first place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTimes Square has been photographed millions of times. Finding a different photograph there is considerably harder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a brief period that summer, one of the world's most recognizable symbols of urban movement became somewhere people could simply pull up a chair and do absolutely nothing. Tall office buildings crowd against one another, windows repeat in rigid grids, sunlight cuts across some facades while others disappear almost completely into shadow. Through a narrow opening between the towers, another ornate building appears in the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat small glimpse is one of my favorite parts of the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is no traditional skyline here and very little sky. Instead, I wanted the architecture itself to fill the frame. The buildings overlap, interrupt and partially conceal one another, creating the visual density that I associate so strongly with New York City.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white makes those relationships even stronger. Color would separate the individual buildings; monochrome pulls them together and emphasizes geometry, contrast and repetition. Bright stone sits beside almost black facades, while hundreds of windows create patterns across the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always enjoyed looking for these compressed views in Manhattan. New York is so frequently photographed through its famous landmarks that it can be easy to overlook the extraordinary architecture packed between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph isn't really about identifying a particular skyscraper. From this perspective, the buildings begin to lose their individual identities. They become an arrangement of vertical lines, repeating windows, curved forms and hard geometric edges.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat abstraction is what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe central building immediately separates itself from the surrounding towers. Its stepped architecture and curved facade contrast with the severe vertical grids behind it, while the arched structure across the rooftop introduces another unexpected pattern. Everything feels incredibly dense. One building seems to push against the next, with almost no breathing room between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because color wasn't important to what I was seeing. This photograph is about architecture and structure—the way sunlight strikes one facade while the neighboring building falls into deep shadow, the repetition of hundreds of windows, and the enormous scale created by stacking all those architectural elements together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNew York gives me endless opportunities to photograph famous buildings, but I'm often more interested in fragments of the city. A different viewpoint can turn familiar architecture into something much less obvious.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, Manhattan becomes almost a study in design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are no streets, people or recognizable pieces of the skyline to establish scale. Bodie is a genuine American ghost town, and what fascinated me was how much of the place still felt intact. I wasn't looking at a recreation or a movie set. These buildings had simply survived, weathering decade after decade in the dry California landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe contrast between the two structures immediately caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the left, the brick building still feels remarkably formal, with its repeating arched windows and carefully laid masonry. Beside it, the wooden building has aged very differently. Its boards are bleached and scarred, the storefront windows have darkened, and a large faded sign remains barely visible across the upper facade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI composed the photograph straight on because I wanted the buildings to stand almost like a portrait. Side by side. Nothing modern interrupts them. Even the empty land stretching away on either side reinforces the isolation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white seemed inevitable here. It concentrates my attention on the cracked wood, old brick, dusty glass and the extraordinary differences in texture between the two buildings. It also removes another layer of time. Without color, I find it much harder to immediately place the photograph in the present.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what I remember most about Bodie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe town doesn't feel rebuilt for visitors. It feels interrupted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese buildings are still standing where people once worked, gathered and watched the town outside their windows. The people disappeared long ago. The door had become its own landscape. Cobwebs stretched across the window and chrome. Paint had cracked and separated. Scratches, dust and years of deterioration covered surfaces that were once polished and carefully maintained.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe old door handle became the centre of the photograph. Its chrome was damaged and dull, yet enough of the original shape remained to suggest the styling and craftsmanship of another era.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the detail in black and white because colour seemed unnecessary. What interested me were the textures—the fractured paint, strands of webbing, worn metal, curved trim and deep shadows. Up close, the automobile almost disappears and the photograph becomes something more abstract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to things that show their age rather than hide it. Behind it, the rigid geometry of the surrounding architecture creates almost the opposite effect—straight lines, repeated windows and hard rectangular forms surrounding this enormous fluid shape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in 2011 and chose black and white because it strips away much of the visual noise. What remains is shape, scale, architecture and reflection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI especially like the small human figures beneath the sculpture. Without them, it would be difficult to appreciate just how substantial Cloud Gate really is. Some are crossing quickly, others seem completely unhurried, and one woman walks through the middle of the street carrying an open umbrella.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe people are what make the photograph, but the city surrounding them matters just as much.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTall Manhattan buildings rise tightly along both sides of the street, creating a corridor that pulls my eye deep into New York. Vans, taxis and delivery vehicles crowd the intersection. Streetlights, signs, scaffolding and windows fill nearly every remaining space. There is very little visual quiet anywhere in the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because it brings all of that complexity together. Clothing, vehicles and architecture stop competing through color, and the photograph becomes about movement, repetition, scale and the extraordinary density of the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is that there isn't one obvious protagonist. My eye keeps moving from person to person, discovering small gestures and separate stories throughout the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the kind of New York photograph I enjoy making most. No landmark is necessary. By then, vegetation had begun to take over the entrance, weeds were pushing up along the base, and the garage door and narrow side window carried the wear of years. What fascinated me was the tension between neglect and design. The concrete-block walls are plain and utilitarian, yet the tiered parapet above them creates a strong geometric silhouette that refuses to disappear quietly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for the scene. Without colour, the photograph becomes about shape, surface, and contrast: pale masonry against dark foliage, the irregular panels of the old door, the deep window opening, and even the loose wire dropping down the facade. Nothing is polished. That is exactly what gives the photograph its character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am drawn to places like this because they are easy to overlook. They are rarely landmarks and almost never destinations. They simply sit beside the road until age, weather, and vegetation slowly change them. This little Indiana garage had reached that point where the ordinary had become distinctive. The fractures, ledges, stains, and mineral colour seem to break the painted marks apart, so the human gestures become part of the surface rather than a separate layer. Some words are still legible; others have faded into fragments. From a distance, the whole wall begins to work almost like an abstract composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat tension is what made the photograph interesting to me. Rock suggests permanence. Graffiti is usually fleeting. Here, the two occupy the same space, one weathering slowly while the other is already disappearing into it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Maine in 2018, but what matters most to me is the texture and contradiction within the frame. The warm natural colour of the stone dominates, while the scattered graffiti interrupts it just enough to keep the eye moving. The sun was already pushing through the mist, but instead of clearing it immediately, the light spread softly across the sky and water. Trees along both banks became dark silhouettes, while a distant bridge appeared almost weightless in the centre of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe water was remarkably calm. Only small ripples disturbed the surface, catching fragments of warm light beneath the brighter sky. From the boat, there was very little sense of movement beyond the quiet lapping of water. The usual detail of the landscape had disappeared into the mist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted the photograph to preserve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRather than emphasizing the bridge or shoreline, I allowed the atmosphere to dominate. The darker trees frame the scene naturally, guiding the eye toward the opening in the distance, while the warm reflection on the water balances the bright morning light above.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFlorida is often photographed for colour, beaches and intense sunlight. This was something much quieter. New York street art was everywhere, but this particular combination stopped me. Someone had created the figure on the right, another face occupied the wall above it, and layers of unrelated graffiti had accumulated around both. Nothing was designed as a complete composition, yet together it worked.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat accidental quality is what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in black and white, allowing the brickwork, painted lines, dark doorways and graphic street art to compete on equal terms. The photograph is visually busy, but the missing head gives the eye somewhere to settle. Even the No Parking sign and pole slicing vertically through the frame become part of the disorder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOver the years I began calling the photograph Lost Head. It became one of those images people remembered and, later, tried to locate for themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNew York constantly changes. Walls are repainted, buildings disappear and street art can vanish overnight. Curved brickwork sits against straight vertical walls, irregular handmade surfaces against an almost mathematical sequence of arches. Even the pale floor becomes part of the perspective, narrowing as it travels deeper into Fort Jefferson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe colour was equally important. The truck had everything I look for in an old vehicle—faded turquoise paint, exposed rust, dents, worn chrome and the kind of patina that cannot be manufactured convincingly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Chevrolet 3100 badge remains visible on the side, while the broad grille and rounded fenders immediately place the truck in another era. A spare tire rests against the side, and behind it the Sinclair sign introduces another piece of roadside Americana. Beyond that, the desert cliffs rise from the landscape, catching just enough remaining light to separate them from the evening sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat made me stop, though, was the combination of the truck and the sunset. Either subject could have carried a photograph on its own. Together they created something much more evocative.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to vehicles that show their age honestly. Perfect restorations can be beautiful, but this truck had history written across every surface. Someone has to change the sign, replace the letters, keep the doors open and prepare the city for whatever happens next. Even the distant shoreline seems uncertain, appearing and disappearing as the mist thickens across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition became a study in restraint. Most of the landscape has been stripped away, leaving the house and trees suspended between water and fog. Their reflections are imperfect and elongated, just strong enough to connect the shoreline to the darker foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMornings like this are one reason I like being out with a camera before the landscape fully wakes. Fog changes familiar places quickly. Details vanish, distances become difficult to judge, and ordinary subjects can take on an entirely different presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me here was that sense of quiet uncertainty. The photograph does not reveal very much, yet it gives the eye room to wander through the mist. New York's skyline has changed considerably since then, making this not only a cityscape but a record of Manhattan at a particular moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to the compression of buildings along the waterfront. Towers of different heights and periods rise almost shoulder to shoulder, creating a dense rhythm of windows, vertical lines and architectural shapes. Construction cranes appear among them, another reminder that New York is rarely finished.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe river gives the photograph room to breathe. Its broad horizontal surface separates me from the city while the skyline forms a solid band beneath the enormous sky. Above it, the clouds become darker and more complicated, pressing down visually on the buildings and giving the scene a weight that would disappear on a clear day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white was an obvious choice for me. Colour would have added information I did not need. In monochrome, the photograph becomes about structure, weather, scale and the subtle tonal differences between stone, glass, water and cloud.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have photographed New York many times, but the city is never quite the same twice. Buildings rise, skylines change and familiar views slowly become historical. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. I wanted to photograph it directly, without trying to dramatize the structure through an unusual angle. The front elevation already had everything I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. The small outbuilding beside it and the dry, treeless landscape keep the church firmly connected to the rough environment around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBodie is filled with structures that make the California Gold Rush era feel unusually tangible. Buildings remain standing where people once lived, worked and gathered, yet the activity that gave them purpose has disappeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast has always interested me. Here, the church still looks capable of welcoming a congregation, but the streets around it belong to a town preserved from another time. The corrugated metal roof had buckled and lifted away from its supports, while the long wooden porch sagged beneath a collection of objects that had simply been left behind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat disorder is what caught my attention. Nothing about the building felt preserved or arranged. Weathered boards overlap one another, doors hang unevenly, windows sit behind rough shutters, and an old chair remains near the centre of the porch. The house seems caught somewhere between still being recognizable as a home and gradually becoming part of the landscape around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was secondary to what interested me—the warped metal, aged timber, deep doorway, rough grass and the extraordinary accumulation of texture across the facade. The darker treatment also gives the open interior a sense of depth without trying to make the scene artificially dramatic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned places because time becomes visible in them. A vintage car sits above the salon, Route 66 shields appear across the facade, and an old Route 66 Grill sign still stands beside the neighbouring building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eColour is a huge part of the photograph. The salon is painted in soft pink, cream and yellow, with bright magenta and green stripes running across the front. Next door, turquoise trim and faded peach walls add another layer of Southwestern character. All of it sits beneath an enormous, intensely blue Arizona sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep the wider street scene rather than isolate a single sign or detail. The empty road, chain-link fence, old vehicles, weathered signage and trees behind the buildings help place the salon within the slightly improvised visual language of historic Route 66.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what has always interested me about this highway. The attraction is not one particular landmark. It is the accumulation of diners, garages, motels, old cars, handmade signs and businesses that developed their own personalities to catch the attention of passing travellers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDeSoto's Salon had that personality in abundance. What finally interested me was the way two very different sections of the building collided within the frame. One facade sweeps diagonally across the photograph in a disciplined pattern of recessed windows, while the other becomes a tighter arrangement of balconies, glass and rectangular compartments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe geometry is complicated, yet there is still order in it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was unnecessary. Removing it pushed the photograph further away from a conventional architectural record and toward line, repetition, contrast and shape. The bright exterior panels become almost white against the deep window openings, making the entire surface feel graphic and dimensional at the same time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVIA 57 West was designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, and its unusual form has always stood apart for me among Manhattan's modern buildings. The largest formation dominates the right side of the frame, while smaller towers and fragments lead the eye across the water toward the distant mountains.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat transformed the scene for me was the light. Soft pink and orange reached the mountain peaks while cooler blues remained across the lake and lower landscape. Above everything, heavy clouds caught traces of the same pastel colour. For a few minutes, warm and cool tones existed together without either one overwhelming the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe still water was equally important. Reflections beneath the tufa formations extend their shapes downward and create a visual balance between the rugged rock and the smooth surface of Mono Lake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been attracted to landscapes that feel slightly unfamiliar, and the tufa towers give Mono Lake that quality immediately. They look sculptural, almost improbable, particularly when separated by quiet water and viewed against the mountains beyond.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph is about that combination: unusual geology, open water, distant mountains and the fleeting colour of sunrise. The landscape already had everything it needed. It was sparse. Almost empty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been attracted to landscapes where scale can be felt immediately, and this was one of those places. Instead of trying to eliminate the flare it created around the lights, I liked what it did to the photograph. The streaks and halos exaggerate the brightness of the traffic signals and give an otherwise ordinary small-town intersection a much stranger presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast is what interested me most. Nothing dramatic is actually happening. It is simply a quiet street in Medfield after dark, yet the colour, darkness and near absence of people change the feeling of the place completely. Its body is worn and faded, with the towing rig still rising behind it, while two smaller damaged vehicles sit close beside it. Farther back, another old truck is tucked beneath a simple roof beside a weathered wooden building. Nothing in the scene feels arranged. The vehicles, sheds, trees and rough ground have simply accumulated into a picture of use, neglect and passing years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was not what interested me here. The photograph is really about texture: aged boards, corrugated roofs, worn metal, grass and the dense canopy of trees surrounding everything. Removing the colour lets those surfaces and shapes carry more of the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the relationship between the vehicles and the buildings. Neither feels separate from the other. Together they suggest a rural working place that has changed gradually, leaving older machines and structures behind rather than clearing them away. Lower in the frame, rooftops overlap one another with vents, brickwork, skylights and industrial structures filling almost every available space.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour would have competed with what interested me most. This photograph is about form, texture and scale. The pale building facade becomes almost graphic, while the darker water tower separates itself clearly from its surroundings. Lines cross lines. Rectangles sit behind diagonals. Old materials exist beside newer construction without any attempt to make the city visually tidy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is one of the things I enjoy about photographing New York City. There is always another layer. Something utilitarian can become the strongest element in the frame simply because of where it sits and how the surrounding architecture organizes itself around it. Warm colour spreads through the clouds and touches the water near the sun, while the buildings fall into a darker band. Farther away, the city becomes a softer texture. That gradual loss of detail gives the view depth and keeps the foreground waterfront distinct.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFlying along the river offered a perspective I could not have found at street level. For me, the photograph brings together two interests: the patterns made by a city and the changing light around them. As wall art, it offers a broad urban view with a warm colour accent.
