The faded yellow wall is interrupted by remnants of turquoise paint and the deep red of the original window frame. Then the details begin to take over. Broken panes have been covered with mismatched pieces of wood. Sections of the wall have fallen away completely, exposing bricks and rough construction underneath. Nothing quite lines up anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the wall straight on because I didn't want perspective to distract from those textures. The entire frame becomes a collection of surfaces: old glass, splintered boards, crumbling plaster, brick, faded paint and weathered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something about Havana's aging architecture that I find endlessly photographic. I don't see decay simply as deterioration. I see layers. Repairs are made, paint is added and disappears, windows are patched rather than replaced, and the building continues to change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005. A blue station wagon fills the foreground while an open-top classic car travels ahead, its passengers visible above the deep red bodywork. Another old car appears farther down the street. Together they lead my eye directly into the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me is how naturally these remarkable vehicles fit into the scene. In almost any other city, a car like this would attract attention at a show or sit polished in someone's collection. In Havana, these aging American cars are woven into everyday life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe architecture matters just as much. Tall, weathered buildings press closely against the narrow street. Balconies, old stonework, barred windows, overhead wires and traditional street lamps surround the cars. Nothing feels staged or arranged for the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also like the restrained color in this photograph. The faded blue of the station wagon and the dark red convertible stand apart from the pale, timeworn buildings without overpowering them. The cars provide the color; Havana provides the texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what I remember most about photographing Cuba. History never seemed confined to museums or monuments. I am drawn to surfaces that have accumulated years of weather, repairs, marks and human contact—the kind of wall that becomes more interesting the longer I stand in front of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this one in southern India.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA small wooden door sits almost unexpectedly within an enormous weathered wall. At first the scene seems overwhelmingly blue, but the closer I looked, the more colors began to emerge. Violet and faded red remain in the door. Pale markings and scratched graffiti wander across the wall. Stains run vertically through the surface, while patches of old paint reveal layer after layer underneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is that tiny plant growing directly beneath the doorway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love details like that. Against this massive, scarred surface, a few green leaves introduce something alive and temporary. The door itself feels almost absorbed into the wall, as though both have been aging together for decades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene straight on because I wanted very little interpretation between me and what I had found. The wall becomes the composition. Texture, color, scratches, stains and imperfections become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing India so much. Extraordinary photographs don't always announce themselves. This one is about what time did to a very small part of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this old automobile at a vintage car exhibition in Los Angeles, but I was far more interested in getting close than making a conventional photograph of the vehicle. The door had become its own landscape. Cobwebs stretched across the window and chrome. Paint had cracked and separated. Scratches, dust and years of deterioration covered surfaces that were once polished and carefully maintained.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe old door handle became the centre of the photograph. Its chrome was damaged and dull, yet enough of the original shape remained to suggest the styling and craftsmanship of another era.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the detail in black and white because colour seemed unnecessary. What interested me were the textures—the fractured paint, strands of webbing, worn metal, curved trim and deep shadows. Up close, the automobile almost disappears and the photograph becomes something more abstract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to things that show their age rather than hide it. The weathered wooden boards are dark and worn, almost disappearing into the shadow of the doorway, while the surrounding brickwork carries an entirely different kind of presence: pale paint, stains, exposed masonry, cracks, and years of uneven decay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this scene in Haliburton, Ontario, in 2008. It was one of those overlooked industrial corners that most people would pass without a second glance. I tend to stop at places like this because the surface tells the story. Here, the wall is not one colour or one texture. It shifts from deep brown brick to faded green, chalky white, and soft lavender-grey, with vertical streaks that seem to record years of rain and exposure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition works because of the tension between structure and collapse. The door and the vertical seams in the wall give the photograph order, but the broken bricks, splintered wood, and scattered rubble along the bottom edge interrupt that order immediately. Nothing is polished. Nothing has been cleaned up for the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is exactly what interested me. The stairs are rigid, functional and repetitive; everything around them is wearing away. Paint has peeled from the brickwork. Dark streaks run down the steps. Patches of warm brown, grey, faded white and ochre shift across the walls, revealing layer after layer of use and exposure. Even the vertical column near the centre seems to separate two different histories of the same interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned industrial spaces because they are full of compositions that were never designed to be photographs. Nothing here was arranged for appearance. The staircase existed simply to move people from one level to another, yet once the factory fell silent, its shape became the dominant visual element. The strong diagonal gives the scene movement, while the worn brick and stained surfaces slow the eye down and reward a closer look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2008. What interests me now is the same thing that interested me then: the evidence of time. The structure remains recognizable and purposeful, but every surface carries the marks of age, neglect and weathering. That closer viewpoint turned the driver's space into the subject. The thin steering wheel, long gear lever, old instrument cluster, worn bench seat, peeling surfaces, and branches reaching into the cab carry the story on their own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for the scene because so much of the photograph is about shape, texture, and deterioration. The sweeping curve of the door frame becomes a border around the interior, while the bright forest beyond the windshield pushes against the dark dashboard and steering column. Nature is visible through every opening, but it is also beginning to move inside.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most is not simply that the Dodge was abandoned. It is the strange intimacy of seeing a machine from the driver's position after its working life has ended. The controls remain recognizable. The seat is still there. Yet the cab has become part vehicle, part woodland debris. The fractures, ledges, stains, and mineral colour seem to break the painted marks apart, so the human gestures become part of the surface rather than a separate layer. Some words are still legible; others have faded into fragments. From a distance, the whole wall begins to work almost like an abstract composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat tension is what made the photograph interesting to me. Rock suggests permanence. Graffiti is usually fleeting. Here, the two occupy the same space, one weathering slowly while the other is already disappearing into it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Maine in 2018, but what matters most to me is the texture and contradiction within the frame. The warm natural colour of the stone dominates, while the scattered graffiti interrupts it just enough to keep the eye moving. Rather than concentrating only on the immense scale of the Wall itself, I was drawn toward this smaller architectural detail. The broad red frame, repeated rectangular windows and tightly divided panes create an almost rigid geometry, yet every section of wood carries evidence of weathering and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what holds the photograph together for me. The structure is orderly. The surface is not.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAcross the doors, red paint has worn into rusty orange, brown and pale exposed wood. Some window panels remain dark while others appear almost white, breaking the repetition just enough to keep the pattern from becoming too perfect. At the centre, the small lock and metal hardware become an understated focal point amid all those larger rectangles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always found doors photographically intriguing because they are both architectural objects and boundaries. They suggest another space without revealing very much about it. The truck had everything I look for in an old vehicle—faded turquoise paint, exposed rust, dents, worn chrome and the kind of patina that cannot be manufactured convincingly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Chevrolet 3100 badge remains visible on the side, while the broad grille and rounded fenders immediately place the truck in another era. A spare tire rests against the side, and behind it the Sinclair sign introduces another piece of roadside Americana. Beyond that, the desert cliffs rise from the landscape, catching just enough remaining light to separate them from the evening sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat made me stop, though, was the combination of the truck and the sunset. Either subject could have carried a photograph on its own. Together they created something much more evocative.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to vehicles that show their age honestly. Perfect restorations can be beautiful, but this truck had history written across every surface. The salon is painted in soft pink, cream and yellow, with bright magenta and green stripes running across the front. Next door, turquoise trim and faded peach walls add another layer of Southwestern character. All of it sits beneath an enormous, intensely blue Arizona sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep the wider street scene rather than isolate a single sign or detail. The empty road, chain-link fence, old vehicles, weathered signage and trees behind the buildings help place the salon within the slightly improvised visual language of historic Route 66.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what has always interested me about this highway. The attraction is not one particular landmark. It is the accumulation of diners, garages, motels, old cars, handmade signs and businesses that developed their own personalities to catch the attention of passing travellers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDeSoto's Salon had that personality in abundance. Each facade seems to belong to a slightly different architectural language—dark, heavily ornamented masonry on the left, a domed structure rising through the centre, and the lighter, more decorative building facing it from across the square.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep that entire relationship in the frame rather than concentrate on a single building. The broad paving in the foreground creates distance, allowing the architecture to unfold gradually as the eye moves deeper into the scene. Bicycles line one side, cars occupy the narrow passage ahead, and a few people cross the square, giving just enough scale to understand the size of the surrounding structures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast sky suited the scene. Its soft light reveals the stonework without harsh shadows, while the subdued colour keeps attention on the elaborate facades, windows, domes and sculptural details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am often more interested in the spaces between important buildings than in photographing landmarks individually. A square like this shows how architecture functions together—how different structures, streets and public spaces accumulate into the character of an old European city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that layering is what makes the photograph interesting. There is no single subject demanding attention. Its body is worn and faded, with the towing rig still rising behind it, while two smaller damaged vehicles sit close beside it. Farther back, another old truck is tucked beneath a simple roof beside a weathered wooden building. Nothing in the scene feels arranged. The vehicles, sheds, trees and rough ground have simply accumulated into a picture of use, neglect and passing years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was not what interested me here. The photograph is really about texture: aged boards, corrugated roofs, worn metal, grass and the dense canopy of trees surrounding everything. Removing the colour lets those surfaces and shapes carry more of the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the relationship between the vehicles and the buildings. Neither feels separate from the other. Together they suggest a rural working place that has changed gradually, leaving older machines and structures behind rather than clearing them away. There are other traces of daily use, but no crowd competing with the car. Between the verticals, decorative stone panels, balustrades and recessed openings give the eye plenty to explore. Light catches the projecting surfaces while the gates and entrances settle into darker tones.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI have always enjoyed Havana’s older architecture for its mixture of craftsmanship, texture and age. When I made this photograph in 2017, I also learned of the building’s association with the Bank of Nova Scotia. That Canadian connection interested me personally, though the repeating columns were the reason I wanted to photograph it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWorking in black and white brings the fluting and carved masonry forward. From across a room, the photograph reads as a clear pattern of light, shadow and vertical lines; closer inspection reveals smaller details within that structure. The ground is pale and rough, the surrounding vegetation dry, and the sky offers a cooler colour that keeps the rust from dominating everything. What I wanted to hold onto was the encounter itself: an old machine still visibly present in a place where weather and time have changed it. The vines do not entirely conceal the door; they make it something to discover.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTexture continues through every part of the photograph. Rough brick meets flaking plaster above, while uneven wooden boards close the entrance below. Across the foreground, patterned paving runs at different angles, adding another layer of lines beneath the wall. The eye can move from the ground toward the door, then upward into the hanging leaves.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, this is the quieter Venice that walking makes possible to notice. A small architectural detail can hold as much interest as a broad canal view when the surfaces are this varied.
