I am drawn to surfaces that have accumulated years of weather, repairs, marks and human contact—the kind of wall that becomes more interesting the longer I stand in front of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this one in southern India.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA small wooden door sits almost unexpectedly within an enormous weathered wall. At first the scene seems overwhelmingly blue, but the closer I looked, the more colors began to emerge. Violet and faded red remain in the door. Pale markings and scratched graffiti wander across the wall. Stains run vertically through the surface, while patches of old paint reveal layer after layer underneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is that tiny plant growing directly beneath the doorway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love details like that. Against this massive, scarred surface, a few green leaves introduce something alive and temporary. The door itself feels almost absorbed into the wall, as though both have been aging together for decades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene straight on because I wanted very little interpretation between me and what I had found. The wall becomes the composition. Texture, color, scratches, stains and imperfections become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing India so much. Extraordinary photographs don't always announce themselves. The weathered wooden boards are dark and worn, almost disappearing into the shadow of the doorway, while the surrounding brickwork carries an entirely different kind of presence: pale paint, stains, exposed masonry, cracks, and years of uneven decay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this scene in Haliburton, Ontario, in 2008. It was one of those overlooked industrial corners that most people would pass without a second glance. I tend to stop at places like this because the surface tells the story. Here, the wall is not one colour or one texture. It shifts from deep brown brick to faded green, chalky white, and soft lavender-grey, with vertical streaks that seem to record years of rain and exposure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition works because of the tension between structure and collapse. The door and the vertical seams in the wall give the photograph order, but the broken bricks, splintered wood, and scattered rubble along the bottom edge interrupt that order immediately. Nothing is polished. Nothing has been cleaned up for the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is exactly what interested me. Across this Maine rock face, layers of white, turquoise, purple, and faded markings sit against stone streaked with rust orange, brown, grey, and ochre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to the way the graffiti does not simply sit on top of the rock. The fractures, ledges, stains, and mineral colour seem to break the painted marks apart, so the human gestures become part of the surface rather than a separate layer. Some words are still legible; others have faded into fragments. From a distance, the whole wall begins to work almost like an abstract composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat tension is what made the photograph interesting to me. Rock suggests permanence. Graffiti is usually fleeting. Here, the two occupy the same space, one weathering slowly while the other is already disappearing into it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Maine in 2018, but what matters most to me is the texture and contradiction within the frame. The warm natural colour of the stone dominates, while the scattered graffiti interrupts it just enough to keep the eye moving. They fold, stretch and overlap, making some areas translucent and others more dense. Dark printing remains visible through the brighter fabric, while small creases catch light along their edges. I like how those variations prevent the strong colour from becoming uniform.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDuring that journey, the prayer flags repeatedly caught my attention. In this image, I moved away from the broad landscape view and concentrated on the material itself. The close framing lets the eye follow the red lines across the picture, then pause at a patch of green or a section of golden cloth carrying its printed marks.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph brings together an identifiable cultural subject and an almost abstract study of colour. The flags remain recognisable, but their overlapping shapes give the image a rhythm beyond any one piece of fabric. As wall art, it can appeal to someone interested in Tibetan travel photography or vivid textile details. I photographed this interior in the abandoned staff residences at the Ellis Island hospital complex in 2009. The colour image holds the warm brickwork, peeling surfaces and wooden floor in a subdued range of brown and grey.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe arched window gives the room a clear source of light. Beneath it, an old radiator sits close to the wall, while the chair occupies a brighter patch farther into the space. Around those recognisable objects, broken material gathers on the floor and larger areas of plaster have fallen away. I like how the light reveals the room without removing its shadows.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe composition depends on that contrast. The window is bright, the far corner dark, and the chair sits between them with a narrow outline. Exposed brick adds a regular pattern on one side, while the damaged ceiling and walls introduce rougher shapes. Those surfaces keep the eye moving through a room that otherwise feels still.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph leaves the room’s earlier life open to reflection. I wanted to record what was visible rather than supply a story for the person who might once have used it. As wall art, it can appeal to someone interested in Ellis Island, abandoned interiors or architectural texture. Around it, masonry changes in size and pattern, with darker patches and filled sections interrupting the wall. Bare vines spread across the facade and gather more densely at one side. I like how the regular shapes of the door and window remain distinct within that rougher texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI have a particular interest in architecture that shows its age through visible layers. Here, the surface suggests changes over time without explaining exactly when or why they happened. I adjusted the colour palette to strengthen that mood, keeping the photograph close to the quieter tones already present in the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the appeal lies in looking carefully at an ordinary part of a building. The photograph does not need a grand entrance or a broad view of the grounds; the wall itself has enough variation to hold attention. As wall art, it can suit someone drawn to English architecture, weathered houses or restrained photographic detail. Its broad lines lead toward the wheels, while the tall door pulls the view upward again. Nothing needs to move for the photograph to have rhythm: circles at ground level, a rectangle behind them, and irregular strokes across the wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is the Rome I find between the better-known sights. The wood is irregular and solid, with broken limbs reaching out across the shallows. Around it, light makes a fine network of ripples on the sand. Its long shadows extend into the clear water, while the colour deepens gradually from a nearly transparent edge to a broad turquoise band. I left plenty of sea beyond it so the eye could move away from the busy shapes and rest near the horizon.
