Rather than concentrating only on the immense scale of the Wall itself, I was drawn toward this smaller architectural detail. The broad red frame, repeated rectangular windows and tightly divided panes create an almost rigid geometry, yet every section of wood carries evidence of weathering and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what holds the photograph together for me. The structure is orderly. The surface is not.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAcross the doors, red paint has worn into rusty orange, brown and pale exposed wood. Some window panels remain dark while others appear almost white, breaking the repetition just enough to keep the pattern from becoming too perfect. At the centre, the small lock and metal hardware become an understated focal point amid all those larger rectangles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always found doors photographically intriguing because they are both architectural objects and boundaries. They suggest another space without revealing very much about it. Standing inside Fort Jefferson, I was drawn immediately to the way one brick opening framed the next, then the next, until the entire corridor collapsed into a tiny dark point in the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat repetition is what makes the photograph work for me. The first arch is massive and heavy, filling most of the frame, yet every opening beyond it becomes progressively smaller. The eye has nowhere else to go. It is pulled straight through the architecture toward the centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition deliberately precise because the geometry was already doing everything I needed. Curved brickwork sits against straight vertical walls, irregular handmade surfaces against an almost mathematical sequence of arches. Even the pale floor becomes part of the perspective, narrowing as it travels deeper into Fort Jefferson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe colour was equally important. Warm browns, reds and muted ochres reveal the variation in the old brickwork rather than reducing it to a single tone. Light entering the corridor catches certain surfaces while others fall into shadow, giving each successive arch its own subtle separation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often photograph architecture for exactly this reason. A structure can become something entirely different when I stop looking at the whole building and concentrate on one repeating element. From a distance, the individual buildings almost disappear into one enormous pattern of colour, repetition and density.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat visual compression is what fascinated me. There is barely any empty space. One structure sits above another, then another, climbing relentlessly across the hillside. Most share the same deep red and brown tones, but small flashes of green, turquoise, yellow and brighter crimson appear in windows, doors and fabric, breaking up the repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scale is difficult to understand until I start looking closely. Every small rectangle is a home. Paths wind between them, buildings lean into the contours of the land, and the settlement seems to have grown organically rather than according to any simple grid.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLarung Gar sits at roughly 12,500 feet, and its isolation was part of what made being there so memorable for me. Yet photographically, I kept returning to the visual structure of the place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the frame to feel almost overwhelming—to let the homes fill it completely, without sky or distant landscape providing relief. For me, that density is the photograph. I photographed this abandoned pickup in 2009 after coming across it on a backroad detour. The colour image places its damaged body against desert scrub and a broad blue sky, with fine clouds streaking above the cab.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe vehicle is incomplete, but its shape is still recognisable. The rounded roof, open window spaces and remaining panels hold together as a single subject, while fallen bodywork sits lower in the foreground. There is very little shine left. Instead, the surface carries orange, brown and darker patches that give each section a different texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the contrast between the truck’s weight and the openness above it. The ground is pale and rough, the surrounding vegetation dry, and the sky offers a cooler colour that keeps the rust from dominating everything. The composition lets the vehicle remain firmly part of the landscape rather than isolating it as a museum object.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI do not know the truck’s working history, and the photograph leaves that story open. What I wanted to hold onto was the encounter itself: an old machine still visibly present in a place where weather and time have changed it. As wall art, it can suit someone interested in vintage vehicles, abandoned places or rustic photography. I made this colour landscape photograph in 2007, framing a section of the river between steep rock faces beneath a narrow band of warm evening sky. The vertical view follows the canyon from its rim to the water.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI visited Horseshoe Bend while travelling through the American Southwest with Alan Briot. Desert landscapes were a focus of that journey, and this overlook offered an especially clear relationship between height, distance, and the winding river below. For this composition, I concentrated on the canyon walls and one stretch of water rather than the entire bend.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe rock faces carry layers, cracks, and darker streaks that reveal their scale. A projecting shelf on the right brings the canyon close to the viewer, while the opposite wall recedes toward the horizon. Green vegetation traces parts of the river’s edge. The water changes from deep blue-green in the foreground to a brighter reflective strip farther away.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThose changes in colour and texture are what hold the photograph together for me. The warm rock surrounds a cooler, quieter line of water, making the depth of the view easy to follow. The scattered pines interrupt those bands with darker, finer lines.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the way the trees give the photograph scale. The largest pine is substantial on its own, but it becomes small beside the surrounding walls. Farther back, other trees occupy ledges and breaks in the rock, helping the eye move through the layers. A nearer orange edge on the right partly encloses the view, while the sloping ground at the bottom leads into it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eKeeping the composition tight allowed me to concentrate on that relationship between living trees and exposed rock. The image has the warmth associated with Bryce Canyon, but it also contains delicate branches, shaded gaps, and subtle shifts in surface colour. The pale beach below gives the eye a quieter area after all that detail.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA soft, clouded sky keeps the top of the photograph restrained. Against it, the lighthouse is easy to find, but it remains secondary to the land around it. That relationship was central to my framing: the tower helps identify the place, while the clay cliffs provide the image’s colour and scale. My attention was on the space between the formations and the way evening light tied them together. The rough foreground gives the view a starting point, while the distant horizon keeps it open.
