The truck had everything I look for in an old vehicle—faded turquoise paint, exposed rust, dents, worn chrome and the kind of patina that cannot be manufactured convincingly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Chevrolet 3100 badge remains visible on the side, while the broad grille and rounded fenders immediately place the truck in another era. A spare tire rests against the side, and behind it the Sinclair sign introduces another piece of roadside Americana. Beyond that, the desert cliffs rise from the landscape, catching just enough remaining light to separate them from the evening sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat made me stop, though, was the combination of the truck and the sunset. Either subject could have carried a photograph on its own. Together they created something much more evocative.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to vehicles that show their age honestly. Perfect restorations can be beautiful, but this truck had history written across every surface. Medfield, Massachusetts, was quiet, the intersection almost empty, and the strongest presence came from two traffic lights glowing an intense blue-green through the darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRoyal Pizza sits on Main Street, its small illuminated sign becoming one of the few obvious signs of activity in the scene. Farther down the road, streetlights and a handful of headlights disappear into the distance. Overhead wires cut through the darkness, while the surrounding buildings are barely visible except for the occasional window and edge picked up by the available light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere was also a slight haze in the air. Instead of trying to eliminate the flare it created around the lights, I liked what it did to the photograph. The streaks and halos exaggerate the brightness of the traffic signals and give an otherwise ordinary small-town intersection a much stranger presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast is what interested me most. Nothing dramatic is actually happening. It is simply a quiet street in Medfield after dark, yet the colour, darkness and near absence of people change the feeling of the place completely. The distant view fades into grey, leaving very little to distract from the ice and its reflection. I like how the water repeats the iceberg’s shape without preserving every detail. Wheel rims, bent handlebars, and sloping tubes cross a background of horizontal joints. The grille above them introduces a different repeating pattern without becoming the main subject. Keeping the view close allows those relationships to remain easy to read.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe photograph does not need a busy street around it to feel connected to the city. These ordinary vehicles, with their visible wear and practical forms, provide a quieter view of Beijing. My attention was on the ice’s shape and the way its pale surfaces changed into blue. I wanted enough of the iceberg to remain visible for the pattern to make sense, while keeping the surrounding landscape outside the main subject. With the long days in December, I was constantly finding photographic opportunities, either on the deck of the scientific icebreaker or while exploring in a zodiac boat. This long iceberg held my attention because its shape changed so much along its length.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn the photograph, the ice forms a broken wall above dark water. Some sections are broad and almost flat across the top; others rise into narrower, irregular shapes. Deep blue crevices interrupt the pale face, and rougher patches add detail near the waterline. Every section seems to offer a different view. I find myself following the upper edge first, then returning to the grooves and openings below it. The wide composition lets those changes remain connected rather than isolating just one of them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe iceberg reminded me of a shipwreck I had photographed in the Bahamas, although the subject here is entirely ice. That association came from the uneven outline and the way solid sections were separated by gaps. Beneath it, the dark, rippled sea gives the pale surface a clear base, while the cloudy sky keeps the colour subdued. For someone drawn to travel portraits or spontaneous street photography, this image preserves a moment from my 2010 travels through India.
