From a distance, the individual buildings almost disappear into one enormous pattern of colour, repetition and density.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat visual compression is what fascinated me. There is barely any empty space. One structure sits above another, then another, climbing relentlessly across the hillside. Most share the same deep red and brown tones, but small flashes of green, turquoise, yellow and brighter crimson appear in windows, doors and fabric, breaking up the repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scale is difficult to understand until I start looking closely. Every small rectangle is a home. Paths wind between them, buildings lean into the contours of the land, and the settlement seems to have grown organically rather than according to any simple grid.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLarung Gar sits at roughly 12,500 feet, and its isolation was part of what made being there so memorable for me. Yet photographically, I kept returning to the visual structure of the place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the frame to feel almost overwhelming—to let the homes fill it completely, without sky or distant landscape providing relief. For me, that density is the photograph. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. I wanted to photograph it directly, without trying to dramatize the structure through an unusual angle. The front elevation already had everything I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. The small outbuilding beside it and the dry, treeless landscape keep the church firmly connected to the rough environment around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBodie is filled with structures that make the California Gold Rush era feel unusually tangible. Buildings remain standing where people once lived, worked and gathered, yet the activity that gave them purpose has disappeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast has always interested me. Here, the church still looks capable of welcoming a congregation, but the streets around it belong to a town preserved from another time. Their amber lighting separates them from the deepening shadows below and gives the entire structure a remarkable presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept a generous amount of sky in the composition because its colour mattered. Soft orange and brown tones spread across the upper half of the frame, creating a restrained backdrop rather than competing with the architecture. Below, the modern city remains visible in layers of rooftops, windows and scattered lights, giving the mosque both scale and context.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was that relationship between the monumental and the everyday. The mosque dominates the skyline, yet it is still embedded within the dense fabric of Istanbul rather than standing apart from it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDusk is often when a city changes character most quickly. Details disappear, artificial lights begin to define the architecture, and familiar buildings take on a completely different weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat transition is what I wanted to hold onto here. They fold, stretch and overlap, making some areas translucent and others more dense. Dark printing remains visible through the brighter fabric, while small creases catch light along their edges. I like how those variations prevent the strong colour from becoming uniform.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDuring that journey, the prayer flags repeatedly caught my attention. In this image, I moved away from the broad landscape view and concentrated on the material itself. The close framing lets the eye follow the red lines across the picture, then pause at a patch of green or a section of golden cloth carrying its printed marks.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph brings together an identifiable cultural subject and an almost abstract study of colour. The flags remain recognisable, but their overlapping shapes give the image a rhythm beyond any one piece of fabric. As wall art, it can appeal to someone interested in Tibetan travel photography or vivid textile details. Below them, the wall becomes increasingly difficult to separate from the leaves and stems covering it. I framed the building from the graveyard, bringing a row of differently shaped headstones into the foreground. Their upright forms repeat the tower on a smaller scale.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe square composition holds that upward movement without excluding the grass at the base. Dark foliage gives weight to the left side, while clouds leave more open space around the tower. In monochrome, the texture of the stones, the mass of ivy and the markings on the headstones become parts of the same tonal landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI found the meeting of ruin and growth compelling here. The church remains recognizable, but its edges soften where plants take over. Rather than assigning stories to the people commemorated in the graveyard, I wanted to show the place as I encountered it. Narrow window divisions rise and branch near the top, while small decorative forms continue along the roofline above. Below the glass, the entrance has its own pointed arch and carved surround. I like how the photograph offers those different scales of looking: the whole façade first, then the finer patterns within the window and doorway. The black and white treatment makes the pale stone and darker glass distinct without separating them from the rest of the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI left some of the setting around the chapel. A large tree occupies the left side, neighbouring buildings appear to the right, and a broad lawn lies in front. Their lower shapes allow the towers to remain prominent, while the clouds keep the sky from becoming an empty backdrop. Looking at the finished photograph, my attention returns to the balance between the two towers and the single large window. Small bright points appear along roads and between the rooftops, with several forming sharp starbursts. They make the nearer streets distinct from the more distant rows of houses without turning the photograph into a view of one road alone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA grassy slope crosses the foreground, and trees partly hide the buildings behind them. Beyond that first layer, a road curves through the neighbourhood. I like how its lighter surface connects separate areas of the picture, allowing the eye to travel past the nearest houses toward the church and the farther skyline.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings the rooftops, lights and clouds into a shared range of tones. Brighter breaks in the sky remain visible between heavier cloud forms, while the pale house fronts stand apart from darker roofs and trees. What interests me is the neighbourhood as a whole. I like how the arms extend towards the edges while the face remains the most detailed part of the composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI gave the photograph a warm orange treatment and a worn, textured appearance. That choice was intended to feel artistic while remaining respectful to my religious faith. The man’s presence gives a sense of scale, but I have kept the building, courtyard and hillside equally important to the view. I photographed the view in London in 2008 while walking around the cathedral grounds and studying the building from different angles.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eStepping back helped me see how naturally the entrance’s symmetry organized the frame. The fluted pillars anchor the sides, the steps draw attention upward, and the dark panelled doors provide a central point of rest. I framed the scene tightly around those elements. The tops of the columns extend beyond the picture, leaving their scale to be understood through the parts that remain visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTexture gives that order a more varied character. The pale bases carry cracks, darker marks and worn patches. Above them, narrow grooves repeat along the columns, with stronger shadows gathering around the recessed entrance. Rectangular panels create a smaller rhythm within the doors, answering the larger vertical forms on either side. I am drawn to architecture where these differences can be felt through the surface alone.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings the stone, wood and shadows together without losing their separate textures. I photographed them in 2024, using a low angle to bring their worn surfaces and carved upper sections into the same frame. A curved wall runs along the right side, with open sky filling the gaps between the stone forms.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe nearest column is strongly textured, its fluting broken by pits and irregular edges. Behind it, the other columns become smaller and more closely gathered. Their carved capitals carry fine shapes above the long vertical grooves. I like how these details remain visible even as the perspective gives the columns a much larger presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe upper stonework crosses the frame in a diagonal, joining the columns while revealing patterned recesses underneath. That line meets the curve of the wall and gives the image a clear enclosure around the sky. In black and white, the pale stone separates from deeper shadows, allowing the surface wear to become part of the architecture’s visible character.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept the view upright to follow the columns from their cropped lower edges to the broken upper stonework. This Italian ruins photograph brings texture and strong verticals to a study, hallway or room with an interest in architectural detail.
