The lake was almost perfectly still, turning the abandoned ship and its towering masts into a reflection beneath a sky filled with gold, amber and orange.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe ship is La Grande Hermine, but what interested me photographically wasn't simply its name or history. It was the extraordinary contrast between decay and beauty. The hull is weathered and deteriorating, sections of the old vessel have fallen away, and the bare masts and rigging reach into the sky without sails. Yet on this particular morning, the sunrise transformed everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI positioned myself low and close to the shoreline, allowing the ship to dominate the frame while still leaving room for the glowing sky and open water. The masts create strong geometric lines overhead, while their reflections stretch downward into the lake. Even the surrounding trees seem to frame the wreck, separating its dark, aging structure from the intense light behind it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something fascinating to me about objects that have outlived their original purpose. This ship was built to move through water, yet now it sits permanently grounded and slowly changing with time and weather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2019, but the scene itself felt strangely outside of time. It was the platform.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the station in 2016 while travelling through New Zealand's South Island. Instead of stepping back to make the familiar postcard view, I was drawn beneath the long covered platform, where the architecture creates an extraordinary tunnel of repeating steel arches, glass, stone and shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe perspective does most of the work. Everything pulls toward a distant vanishing point—the railway tracks, platform edge, roof structure, lamps and the beautiful row of arched station windows on the left. Even the shadows stretch diagonally across the pavement, adding another layer of lines to the composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt natural for this photograph. Without color competing for attention, the structure becomes much more obvious. Sunlight strikes the stone facade and sections of the platform while the steel canopy moves repeatedly between brilliant highlights and deep shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI particularly like that the station is almost empty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDunedin Train Station is one of New Zealand's best-known architectural landmarks, but this photograph isn't really about its fame. Bodie is a genuine American ghost town, and what fascinated me was how much of the place still felt intact. I wasn't looking at a recreation or a movie set. These buildings had simply survived, weathering decade after decade in the dry California landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe contrast between the two structures immediately caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the left, the brick building still feels remarkably formal, with its repeating arched windows and carefully laid masonry. Beside it, the wooden building has aged very differently. Its boards are bleached and scarred, the storefront windows have darkened, and a large faded sign remains barely visible across the upper facade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI composed the photograph straight on because I wanted the buildings to stand almost like a portrait. Side by side. Nothing modern interrupts them. Even the empty land stretching away on either side reinforces the isolation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white seemed inevitable here. It concentrates my attention on the cracked wood, old brick, dusty glass and the extraordinary differences in texture between the two buildings. It also removes another layer of time. Without color, I find it much harder to immediately place the photograph in the present.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what I remember most about Bodie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe town doesn't feel rebuilt for visitors. It feels interrupted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese buildings are still standing where people once worked, gathered and watched the town outside their windows. The people disappeared long ago. Rather than running in a straight boundary around the property, it curves around this Irish home in a broad teardrop form, giving the entire scene a geometry I found impossible to ignore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the house in Ireland with the wall sweeping through the foreground, using its rough surface and irregular stones to lead the eye toward the simple white building beyond. In black and white, those textures become even more pronounced. The dark stones, pale walls of the house, grasses, flowers, and heavy sky separate into layers rather than competing through color.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sky changed the character of the photograph completely. Broad, dark clouds stretch across most of the frame, giving the relatively quiet countryside scene a sense of weight and drama. Below them, the house feels almost stark in its simplicity. Smaller homes, stone boundaries, and the narrow road continue into the distance, but they remain secondary to the relationship between the cottage and the wall surrounding it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was how much structure existed in what initially appeared to be a simple rural scene. The wall is not merely a foreground element. One massive concrete opening leads to another, then another, drawing the eye steadily through the abandoned factory until the architecture seems to disappear into darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this industrial ruin in Ontario, where years of neglect had stripped the interior down to its basic structure. Rough concrete columns dominate the foreground. Beyond them, worn floorboards, scattered debris, broken material and a large leaning panel interrupt what was once an orderly working space. There is very little left to soften the building. That emptiness is part of what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because the photograph is really about structure, texture and depth. Without colour competing for attention, the repeated rectangular forms become much stronger. Light catching the edges of the concrete separates each successive opening, while the darker recesses keep pulling the photograph farther back into the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been fascinated by abandoned places because they reveal architecture in a way occupied buildings rarely do. Once the machinery, people and daily activity disappear, the bones of the place become visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, those bones are almost geometric. The heavy vertical columns, horizontal beams and receding doorways create a surprisingly ordered composition inside a space otherwise defined by decay. That simplicity was what caught me here on Florida's Intracoastal Waterway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was on the water early in the summer of 2009 when the entire scene seemed suspended in haze. The sun was already pushing through the mist, but instead of clearing it immediately, the light spread softly across the sky and water. Trees along both banks became dark silhouettes, while a distant bridge appeared almost weightless in the centre of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe water was remarkably calm. Only small ripples disturbed the surface, catching fragments of warm light beneath the brighter sky. From the boat, there was very little sense of movement beyond the quiet lapping of water. The usual detail of the landscape had disappeared into the mist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted the photograph to preserve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRather than emphasizing the bridge or shoreline, I allowed the atmosphere to dominate. The darker trees frame the scene naturally, guiding the eye toward the opening in the distance, while the warm reflection on the water balances the bright morning light above.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFlorida is often photographed for colour, beaches and intense sunlight. This was something much quieter. The first arch is massive and heavy, filling most of the frame, yet every opening beyond it becomes progressively smaller. The eye has nowhere else to go. It is pulled straight through the architecture toward the centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition deliberately precise because the geometry was already doing everything I needed. Curved brickwork sits against straight vertical walls, irregular handmade surfaces against an almost mathematical sequence of arches. Even the pale floor becomes part of the perspective, narrowing as it travels deeper into Fort Jefferson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe colour was equally important. Warm browns, reds and muted ochres reveal the variation in the old brickwork rather than reducing it to a single tone. Light entering the corridor catches certain surfaces while others fall into shadow, giving each successive arch its own subtle separation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often photograph architecture for exactly this reason. A structure can become something entirely different when I stop looking at the whole building and concentrate on one repeating element. It was texture, shadow and shape. The rough masonry, dark bark, fallen leaves and battered door all occupied nearly the same tonal world, which made the roots feel even more dominant. They do not simply frame the entrance; they seem to press against it from every direction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing was arranged. I did not move branches, clear leaves or try to make the doorway more visible. Its partial concealment was the reason I stopped.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat stays with me is the tension between something built to endure and something growing without any concern for the structure around it. A fortress suggests permanence, strength and control. The roots suggest the opposite—slow, persistent change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHavana is full of layers, but this was one of the quieter ones. No crowd, no traffic, no obvious landmark announcing itself. Just an old door, heavy stone and trees steadily changing the wall around them. The water was nearly motionless, carrying soft reflections downward and doubling the few shapes that remained visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to how little the scene needed. There is no dramatic landmark and almost no colour demanding attention. Instead, the photograph depends on atmosphere—the dense fog, the muted dawn light, the isolated trees and the broad areas of open water and sky. Even the distant shoreline seems uncertain, appearing and disappearing as the mist thickens across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition became a study in restraint. Most of the landscape has been stripped away, leaving the house and trees suspended between water and fog. Their reflections are imperfect and elongated, just strong enough to connect the shoreline to the darker foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMornings like this are one reason I like being out with a camera before the landscape fully wakes. Fog changes familiar places quickly. Details vanish, distances become difficult to judge, and ordinary subjects can take on an entirely different presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me here was that sense of quiet uncertainty. The photograph does not reveal very much, yet it gives the eye room to wander through the mist. Broad stone steps enter from the left, while the paved lane continues between tall buildings toward a dark doorway at the far end. Balconies rise above it, an old wall lamp projects into the narrow space, and a metal shutter marked with graffiti introduces something unmistakably contemporary into an otherwise aged setting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right because the photograph is really about surfaces and structure. Rough stone, smoother masonry, dark window openings and irregular paving all separate through tone rather than colour. The absence of people makes the street feel unusually still.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBarcelona's Gothic Quarter can be crowded and energetic, but scenes like this have always interested me more. Nothing about the building felt preserved or arranged. Weathered boards overlap one another, doors hang unevenly, windows sit behind rough shutters, and an old chair remains near the centre of the porch. The house seems caught somewhere between still being recognizable as a home and gradually becoming part of the landscape around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was secondary to what interested me—the warped metal, aged timber, deep doorway, rough grass and the extraordinary accumulation of texture across the facade. The darker treatment also gives the open interior a sense of depth without trying to make the scene artificially dramatic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned places because time becomes visible in them. Everything else in the scene feels remarkably solid—the heavy masonry, the geometric paving underfoot and the bright glass structure cutting horizontally across the lower half of the frame. Then the flag breaks that stillness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white suited the scene immediately. Without colour, the photograph becomes a study of light, architecture and contrast. The old stone tower rises from the darker roofline while the modern glass surfaces below glow almost white. Farther away, contemporary Berlin appears only as a scattering of buildings and lights along the horizon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have photographed Berlin many times, and I am always interested in the way older architecture and modern design coexist within the city. From this rooftop viewpoint, that relationship became unusually clear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph is not the grand exterior view normally associated with the Reichstag. Without colour, the scene becomes quieter and more elemental. The pale ground, dark vegetation and small geometric buildings sit beneath layer after layer of clouds, some soft and distant, others heavy enough to dominate the upper half of the image.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eArizona is often photographed through dramatic rock formations and intense desert colour, but this scene offered something very different. It was sparse. Almost empty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been attracted to landscapes where scale can be felt immediately, and this was one of those places. Farther down the road, streetlights and a handful of headlights disappear into the distance. Overhead wires cut through the darkness, while the surrounding buildings are barely visible except for the occasional window and edge picked up by the available light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere was also a slight haze in the air. Instead of trying to eliminate the flare it created around the lights, I liked what it did to the photograph. The streaks and halos exaggerate the brightness of the traffic signals and give an otherwise ordinary small-town intersection a much stranger presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast is what interested me most. Nothing dramatic is actually happening. It is simply a quiet street in Medfield after dark, yet the colour, darkness and near absence of people change the feeling of the place completely. Yellow fills much of the frame, interrupted by green paint, dark door panels and patches where the surface has broken away. The man’s quieter clothing stands apart from that brightness. His position near the left edge lets the architecture occupy the picture without turning it into an empty study of buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAbove the doors, lace curtains and small plants soften the windows. At street level, signs, pipes and slender posts keep the scene grounded in ordinary use. I like how those details remain visible alongside the weathering. There is care here as well as wear, and the photograph leaves room for both.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the interest lies in that meeting of a person and a place for a brief moment. The old-town setting has texture and colour, while the walking figure brings movement to its otherwise steady lines. I found that keeping them low in the composition made their isolation more apparent than a close view would have done.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe foreground is uneven with small patches of scrub. Behind the plant, the mountain carries larger folds, darker ridges, and touches of snow near the higher ground. In the photograph, the water becomes broad, blurred bands rather than separate breaking crests. Dark reflections collect beneath the supports, and a little of the sky’s gold reaches the wet surface below. The clouds keep the light uneven, with brighter openings close to the horizon.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat I wanted to preserve was that balance of strength and softness. Its rounded end and long roof were still easy to recognise, but the sides had become uneven, with loose panels and dark openings breaking up the surface. I included the rocky hills behind it, placing the damaged structure within the landscape where I found it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe trailer stretches horizontally across the middle of the photograph. That shape echoes the low ridge beyond it and the long bands of cloud above. Within the trailer itself, the lines are much less settled: upright supports, buckled siding, and pieces leaning against the end give the eye a more irregular route through the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe ground in front is open and rough, with small stones and sparse growth. It creates some distance between the camera and the trailer, so the structure can be seen as a whole. Trees and darker vegetation gather farther back, separating the pale roof from parts of the hillside.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn monochrome, the condition of the surfaces becomes especially clear. Light catches the curved roof and remaining panels, while the windows hold deep shadow. I wanted that physical detail to carry the photograph, together with the setting’s open space. The image preserves the trailer as it stood in 2009; its previous occupants and their lives remain outside what I can know from this view.
