From a distance, the individual buildings almost disappear into one enormous pattern of colour, repetition and density.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat visual compression is what fascinated me. There is barely any empty space. One structure sits above another, then another, climbing relentlessly across the hillside. Most share the same deep red and brown tones, but small flashes of green, turquoise, yellow and brighter crimson appear in windows, doors and fabric, breaking up the repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scale is difficult to understand until I start looking closely. Every small rectangle is a home. Paths wind between them, buildings lean into the contours of the land, and the settlement seems to have grown organically rather than according to any simple grid.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLarung Gar sits at roughly 12,500 feet, and its isolation was part of what made being there so memorable for me. Yet photographically, I kept returning to the visual structure of the place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the frame to feel almost overwhelming—to let the homes fill it completely, without sky or distant landscape providing relief. For me, that density is the photograph. Most of the scene falls into muted gray tones, which makes the faded red maple leaf high on the front of the building quietly assert itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast is what interested me. The shed is wonderfully imperfect. Boards have aged at different rates, the large wooden door is worn and uneven, and the small window carries its own collection of marks and reflections. Even the utility wires crossing above the roof contribute to the straightforward character of the place. Nothing has been cleaned up for the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe restrained colour gives the image another layer. The red maple leaf remains recognizable without overpowering the weathered wood around it. Against the nearly monochrome building and overcast sky, it becomes both a visual focal point and an unmistakably Canadian element.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to buildings that reveal their history through their surfaces. Along the coast of Prince Edward Island, working sheds like this are part of the landscape rather than architectural showpieces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to preserve here: a simple fishing building, worn by the Atlantic environment, photographed without trying to make it prettier than it was. Its weathered wooden facade, narrow pointed windows and small bell tower have a simplicity that feels almost severe, particularly beneath the enormous blue sky surrounding Bodie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this building in 2009 while exploring the preserved ghost town. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. I wanted to photograph it directly, without trying to dramatize the structure through an unusual angle. The front elevation already had everything I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. The small outbuilding beside it and the dry, treeless landscape keep the church firmly connected to the rough environment around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBodie is filled with structures that make the California Gold Rush era feel unusually tangible. Buildings remain standing where people once lived, worked and gathered, yet the activity that gave them purpose has disappeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast has always interested me. Here, the church still looks capable of welcoming a congregation, but the streets around it belong to a town preserved from another time. The harbour is quiet, the boats are tied up, and the whole scene feels shaped by water, weather, rock and years of use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the left, red fishing boats sit against the wharves, bringing the strongest colour into an otherwise subdued scene. Across the narrow harbour channel, grey wooden sheds stand on pilings above the water. Behind them, exposed granite rises into a scatter of homes, utility poles and simple buildings that seem to follow the contours of the shoreline rather than fight them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast sky was important to the photograph. It softened the light and took away the bright, postcard-like quality the scene might have had, leaving the textures and muted colours to carry the image. I especially like the contrast between the smooth water, the hard granite and the weathered wood. Nothing is overly polished. It feels practical, lived in and closely connected to the sea.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that is what makes this view of Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, interesting. It is not one isolated subject but a broader portrait of a coastal fishing community, where boats, sheds, houses and shoreline all belong to the same landscape. Medfield, Massachusetts, was quiet, the intersection almost empty, and the strongest presence came from two traffic lights glowing an intense blue-green through the darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRoyal Pizza sits on Main Street, its small illuminated sign becoming one of the few obvious signs of activity in the scene. Farther down the road, streetlights and a handful of headlights disappear into the distance. Overhead wires cut through the darkness, while the surrounding buildings are barely visible except for the occasional window and edge picked up by the available light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere was also a slight haze in the air. Instead of trying to eliminate the flare it created around the lights, I liked what it did to the photograph. The streaks and halos exaggerate the brightness of the traffic signals and give an otherwise ordinary small-town intersection a much stranger presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast is what interested me most. Nothing dramatic is actually happening. It is simply a quiet street in Medfield after dark, yet the colour, darkness and near absence of people change the feeling of the place completely. I photographed these hillside homes on Capri, Italy, during a summer visit in 2005. In black and white, their pale walls, dark windows and layered terraces become a close study of how the town meets the island’s terrain.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe composition holds several different scales together. Nearby facades show arched openings and smaller architectural details, while taller trees rise between the buildings. Behind them, a steep rocky hillside fills the upper background. I like that the landscape remains part of the picture even though the architecture occupies much of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eExploring Capri’s alleys and winding streets gave me many changing viewpoints. This one kept my attention because of the way the homes overlap. Rooflines and balconies lead from one building to another, and the trees soften the more regular edges. From above, a familiar part of the village became a composition of bends, rooftops, and trees. The road gives the eye a clear route through it, appearing near the lower left before turning and climbing into the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSome of these homes are places I have walked past many times. Seeing them together from this angle brings out the relationship between the small buildings and the wooded landscape around them. The trees are not simply a backdrop; they separate the houses, overlap their roofs, and shape the spaces along the road.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white keeps attention on that arrangement. Snow highlights the roadside curves, while darker pavement and evergreen foliage add structure.
