The lake was almost perfectly still, turning the abandoned ship and its towering masts into a reflection beneath a sky filled with gold, amber and orange.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe ship is La Grande Hermine, but what interested me photographically wasn't simply its name or history. It was the extraordinary contrast between decay and beauty. The hull is weathered and deteriorating, sections of the old vessel have fallen away, and the bare masts and rigging reach into the sky without sails. Yet on this particular morning, the sunrise transformed everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI positioned myself low and close to the shoreline, allowing the ship to dominate the frame while still leaving room for the glowing sky and open water. The masts create strong geometric lines overhead, while their reflections stretch downward into the lake. Even the surrounding trees seem to frame the wreck, separating its dark, aging structure from the intense light behind it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something fascinating to me about objects that have outlived their original purpose. This ship was built to move through water, yet now it sits permanently grounded and slowly changing with time and weather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2019, but the scene itself felt strangely outside of time. That was what drew me to this scene—the ordinary rush of Manhattan transformed by wet pavement and darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed from the sidewalk, looking down a corridor of tall buildings toward the traffic beyond. Taxis and cars crowd the street, a city bus works its way through them, and a few pedestrians move through the foreground. Yet the people remain almost anonymous, reduced to dark silhouettes against the reflected light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat makes the photograph work for me is the depth. The repeating streetlights gradually become smaller as they disappear down the avenue, pulling my eye deep into Manhattan. Above them, scattered office windows punctuate the darkness. Below, the wet sidewalk carries that light back toward the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white strips away the competing colors of New York and concentrates everything on light, shadow, movement and reflection. The brightest headlights become almost white against the surrounding darkness, while large portions of the buildings disappear into deep shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always enjoyed photographing cities after rain. Familiar streets become more cinematic, but nothing about the moment needs to be staged. Tall office buildings crowd against one another, windows repeat in rigid grids, sunlight cuts across some facades while others disappear almost completely into shadow. Through a narrow opening between the towers, another ornate building appears in the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat small glimpse is one of my favorite parts of the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is no traditional skyline here and very little sky. Instead, I wanted the architecture itself to fill the frame. The buildings overlap, interrupt and partially conceal one another, creating the visual density that I associate so strongly with New York City.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white makes those relationships even stronger. Color would separate the individual buildings; monochrome pulls them together and emphasizes geometry, contrast and repetition. Bright stone sits beside almost black facades, while hundreds of windows create patterns across the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always enjoyed looking for these compressed views in Manhattan. New York is so frequently photographed through its famous landmarks that it can be easy to overlook the extraordinary architecture packed between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph isn't really about identifying a particular skyscraper. It was the platform.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the station in 2016 while travelling through New Zealand's South Island. Instead of stepping back to make the familiar postcard view, I was drawn beneath the long covered platform, where the architecture creates an extraordinary tunnel of repeating steel arches, glass, stone and shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe perspective does most of the work. Everything pulls toward a distant vanishing point—the railway tracks, platform edge, roof structure, lamps and the beautiful row of arched station windows on the left. Even the shadows stretch diagonally across the pavement, adding another layer of lines to the composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt natural for this photograph. Without color competing for attention, the structure becomes much more obvious. Sunlight strikes the stone facade and sections of the platform while the steel canopy moves repeatedly between brilliant highlights and deep shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI particularly like that the station is almost empty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDunedin Train Station is one of New Zealand's best-known architectural landmarks, but this photograph isn't really about its fame. A single visitor can seem to occupy several places at once, repeated across panes of glass and interrupted by the heavy architectural framework.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that confusion is the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the image in Berlin in 2014, looking into the interior of the Reichstag's glass dome. Rather than trying to simplify the scene, I embraced its complexity. The dark structural beams divide the frame into a series of irregular compartments, and within each one there seems to be another small scene unfolding.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe longer I look at it, the less certain I become about what is physically in front of me and what is only a reflection. People overlap. Lines change direction. Glass surfaces reveal one level while simultaneously reflecting another.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white pushes the photograph even further toward abstraction. Without color, I am left with geometry, repetition, movement and contrast. The architecture almost becomes a grid containing dozens of tiny human moments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what interested me most about photographing the Reichstag dome. One massive concrete opening leads to another, then another, drawing the eye steadily through the abandoned factory until the architecture seems to disappear into darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this industrial ruin in Ontario, where years of neglect had stripped the interior down to its basic structure. Rough concrete columns dominate the foreground. Beyond them, worn floorboards, scattered debris, broken material and a large leaning panel interrupt what was once an orderly working space. There is very little left to soften the building. That emptiness is part of what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because the photograph is really about structure, texture and depth. Without colour competing for attention, the repeated rectangular forms become much stronger. Light catching the edges of the concrete separates each successive opening, while the darker recesses keep pulling the photograph farther back into the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been fascinated by abandoned places because they reveal architecture in a way occupied buildings rarely do. Once the machinery, people and daily activity disappear, the bones of the place become visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, those bones are almost geometric. The heavy vertical columns, horizontal beams and receding doorways create a surprisingly ordered composition inside a space otherwise defined by decay. Without colour, the photograph becomes more about light, geometry and material. Bright stone steps stand against the darker brickwork. The two doors anchor opposite levels of the composition, while the diagonal staircase creates movement through what is otherwise a very still scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are the details I often remember most from Venice. The city is filled with extraordinary architecture, but much of its character exists at a more intimate scale—in entrances, passages, steps and walls that people move past every day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph is about that quieter Venice. Standing inside Fort Jefferson, I was drawn immediately to the way one brick opening framed the next, then the next, until the entire corridor collapsed into a tiny dark point in the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat repetition is what makes the photograph work for me. The first arch is massive and heavy, filling most of the frame, yet every opening beyond it becomes progressively smaller. The eye has nowhere else to go. It is pulled straight through the architecture toward the centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition deliberately precise because the geometry was already doing everything I needed. Curved brickwork sits against straight vertical walls, irregular handmade surfaces against an almost mathematical sequence of arches. Even the pale floor becomes part of the perspective, narrowing as it travels deeper into Fort Jefferson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe colour was equally important. Warm browns, reds and muted ochres reveal the variation in the old brickwork rather than reducing it to a single tone. Light entering the corridor catches certain surfaces while others fall into shadow, giving each successive arch its own subtle separation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often photograph architecture for exactly this reason. A structure can become something entirely different when I stop looking at the whole building and concentrate on one repeating element. The bridge begins high above me, cuts diagonally across the photograph and stretches toward the Sydney skyline on the opposite side of the harbour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was 2016, during blue hour, when the city lights were beginning to appear but there was still enough colour left in the sky. Deep blue fills most of the frame, while the last sunset light burns orange, pink and violet along the horizon. Beneath it, Sydney Harbour settles into cooler tones and the illuminated buildings on the left begin to define the city after dark.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was the contrast in scale. The skyline appears relatively small beneath the immense lattice of steel overhead. Individual lights along the bridge create tiny points of warmth within the dark structure, while the open sky on the left gives all that weight somewhere to breathe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSydney Harbour Bridge is one of those landmarks that has been photographed countless times, so I was less interested in simply recording what it looked like. I wanted to find a viewpoint where its engineering, mass and geometry became the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the sunset completed it. I was drawn to the layers immediately—the bartender facing away from me in his cowboy hat, the illuminated drinks cooler, bottles lined across the counter and an old Ford grille mounted against the back wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a lot happening in the frame, yet the bartender gives everything a centre. He stands almost in silhouette, surrounded by objects, handwritten details and accumulated pieces of the bar’s personality. Above him, the currency creates a dense, irregular canopy that seems to press down into the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for this photograph. It reduces all that visual clutter into light, shadow, texture and shape. The refrigerator glows on one side, a table lamp burns brightly on the other, and the darker centre of the room holds the bartender between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most about places like this is how much character can collect in a relatively small space. Nothing feels designed for a photograph. The bottles, old automotive pieces, hanging money and worn counter have simply accumulated into something distinctive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to keep. From this elevated position, the architecture becomes almost abstract. Curving lines circle the frame while the dark central form narrows toward the building below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour added very little to what interested me. This photograph is about shape, repetition, reflection and light. The strong horizontal bands of the central structure create a visual rhythm, while the glass floor and surrounding framework reveal people and interior spaces far beneath the viewpoint.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSmall points of light break through the darker areas, producing sharp star-like highlights against the steel and glass. Around them, reflections overlap with structural lines until it becomes difficult to tell where one surface ends and another begins.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is that the photograph does not immediately explain itself. The Reichstag is one of Berlin's most recognizable buildings, yet from inside the dome the familiar landmark becomes a study in contemporary architectural design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that is what made the scene worth photographing. I was no longer looking at a government building from the outside. The architecture stopped reading as a structure and became a pattern.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRows of angular panels repeat across the facade, getting progressively smaller as they climb toward the top of the frame. In black and white, the geometry becomes even more pronounced. Bright triangular surfaces sit beside deep shadows, while the windows and structural lines underneath add another layer of repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI deliberately left a large area of clean white sky above the building. That open space gives the dense pattern somewhere to go and exaggerates the sense that the facade is continuing upward almost indefinitely. The perspective also changes the scale. Forms that appear large and heavy near the bottom become smaller, tighter and more abstract as they recede.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the kind of architectural photography I enjoy most. I am not simply recording what a building looks like. I am looking for the smaller visual relationships hidden inside it — rhythm, repetition, contrast, angles and the way perspective can transform something familiar.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePhotographed in Adelaide, Australia, the scene becomes less about a particular piece of architecture and more about shape and structure. I photographed this New York memorial in 2017, keeping the surrounding shadows in the frame. The colour image centres on a handmade tribute associated with the aftermath of September 11.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat made me stop was the scale of the individual contributions. Small painted tiles sit against a practical fence, carrying symbols, colours and messages that differ from one piece to the next. Some are immediately visible; others are partly lost in the dimmer areas. Together they form a public memorial with a very personal texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI framed the scene around the overhead light rather than trying to make every tile equally clear. Its warm glow gives the central lettering a place to settle, while the darker edges leave room for the eye to explore more slowly. The fence’s repeated diamond pattern connects the separate pieces without erasing their differences.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph holds an understated kind of remembrance. The materials are ordinary, but the care in the individual tiles gives them significance. I wanted to preserve that human scale in the image, alongside the rough wall and the shadows around it. As wall art, it may speak to someone connected to New York or interested in memorial photography and community-made public art. Dark recesses give them depth, while brighter upper edges draw attention back through the frame. I wanted to hold that relationship between a strong natural setting and a modest detail within it. Its scale is reinforced by how far those marks extend beyond the buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept both levels of the site within the frame. The upper walls occupy a narrow ledge near the shadowed alcove, while the lower structures rest closer to the open ground. Seeing them together makes their different positions within the rock face part of the photograph’s story.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLight separates the surfaces without removing their texture. Pale areas of sandstone sit beside darker recesses, and the ruins cast smaller shadows of their own. Across the foreground, sparse vegetation and uneven ground provide a more immediate sense of place.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat drew me here was the meeting of human construction and the much larger landscape. The remaining walls do not compete with the cliff; they sit within its shape.
