Broken panes have been covered with mismatched pieces of wood. Sections of the wall have fallen away completely, exposing bricks and rough construction underneath. Nothing quite lines up anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the wall straight on because I didn't want perspective to distract from those textures. The entire frame becomes a collection of surfaces: old glass, splintered boards, crumbling plaster, brick, faded paint and weathered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something about Havana's aging architecture that I find endlessly photographic. I don't see decay simply as deterioration. I see layers. Repairs are made, paint is added and disappears, windows are patched rather than replaced, and the building continues to change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005. It was completely out of place—a boat built for the water stranded inside an industrial building that was itself slowly falling apart.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction made the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe red paint had peeled away in long irregular streaks, exposing bare wood and traces of green underneath. Behind it, decades of wear had transformed the brick wall into layers of faded paint, stains and exposed masonry. Even the staircase seems to have become part of the decay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition square and relatively tight because I wanted the boat and wall to become almost graphic. The diagonal of the hull cuts hard across the frame, while the staircase moves in the opposite direction. Against all those subdued browns, creams and grays, the remaining red paint refuses to disappear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this scene in 2006, not far from my studio in Ontario. I never learned how the boat ended up inside the factory, and I think I prefer not knowing. The mystery is part of what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph was later selected for publication in Black \u0026amp; White Magazine’s Colour Special Edition, which felt particularly appropriate. Color is essential here. Without that battered red hull, it simply wouldn't be the same photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSometimes the most interesting subjects aren't where they belong. Bodie is a genuine American ghost town, and what fascinated me was how much of the place still felt intact. I wasn't looking at a recreation or a movie set. These buildings had simply survived, weathering decade after decade in the dry California landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe contrast between the two structures immediately caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the left, the brick building still feels remarkably formal, with its repeating arched windows and carefully laid masonry. Beside it, the wooden building has aged very differently. Its boards are bleached and scarred, the storefront windows have darkened, and a large faded sign remains barely visible across the upper facade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI composed the photograph straight on because I wanted the buildings to stand almost like a portrait. Side by side. Nothing modern interrupts them. Even the empty land stretching away on either side reinforces the isolation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white seemed inevitable here. It concentrates my attention on the cracked wood, old brick, dusty glass and the extraordinary differences in texture between the two buildings. It also removes another layer of time. Without color, I find it much harder to immediately place the photograph in the present.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what I remember most about Bodie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe town doesn't feel rebuilt for visitors. It feels interrupted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese buildings are still standing where people once worked, gathered and watched the town outside their windows. The people disappeared long ago. I am drawn to surfaces that have accumulated years of weather, repairs, marks and human contact—the kind of wall that becomes more interesting the longer I stand in front of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this one in southern India.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA small wooden door sits almost unexpectedly within an enormous weathered wall. At first the scene seems overwhelmingly blue, but the closer I looked, the more colors began to emerge. Violet and faded red remain in the door. Pale markings and scratched graffiti wander across the wall. Stains run vertically through the surface, while patches of old paint reveal layer after layer underneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is that tiny plant growing directly beneath the doorway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love details like that. Against this massive, scarred surface, a few green leaves introduce something alive and temporary. The door itself feels almost absorbed into the wall, as though both have been aging together for decades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene straight on because I wanted very little interpretation between me and what I had found. The wall becomes the composition. Texture, color, scratches, stains and imperfections become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing India so much. Extraordinary photographs don't always announce themselves. The structure is still recognizable, yet vines have pushed across the roofline, tall grasses crowd the foreground, and sections of the lower wall have opened enough to expose the dark framework beneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Ontario and kept the composition vertical so the barn rises out of the tangled vegetation rather than sitting neatly apart from it. That relationship matters to me. The weathered boards, broken edges, leaning lines, and dense growth all compete within the frame, while the open space on the right gives the eye somewhere to move before returning to the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for this photograph because the subject is really about texture and structure. Removing color puts more emphasis on the grain of the wood, the pale grasses, the mass of leaves climbing over the barn, and the deep shadow inside the damaged lower section. Even the heavy cloud cover becomes part of the mood without overwhelming the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the tension between something once built for practical use and the landscape gradually reclaiming it. It is a quiet rural scene, but there is nothing tidy about it. It shifts from deep brown brick to faded green, chalky white, and soft lavender-grey, with vertical streaks that seem to record years of rain and exposure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition works because of the tension between structure and collapse. The door and the vertical seams in the wall give the photograph order, but the broken bricks, splintered wood, and scattered rubble along the bottom edge interrupt that order immediately. Light catching the edges of the concrete separates each successive opening, while the darker recesses keep pulling the photograph farther back into the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been fascinated by abandoned places because they reveal architecture in a way occupied buildings rarely do. Once the machinery, people and daily activity disappear, the bones of the place become visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, those bones are almost geometric. The heavy vertical columns, horizontal beams and receding doorways create a surprisingly ordered composition inside a space otherwise defined by decay. The broad red frame, repeated rectangular windows and tightly divided panes create an almost rigid geometry, yet every section of wood carries evidence of weathering and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what holds the photograph together for me. The structure is orderly. The surface is not.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAcross the doors, red paint has worn into rusty orange, brown and pale exposed wood. Some window panels remain dark while others appear almost white, breaking the repetition just enough to keep the pattern from becoming too perfect. At the centre, the small lock and metal hardware become an understated focal point amid all those larger rectangles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always found doors photographically intriguing because they are both architectural objects and boundaries. They suggest another space without revealing very much about it. I did not move branches, clear leaves or try to make the doorway more visible. A fortress suggests permanence, strength and control. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. I wanted to photograph it directly, without trying to dramatize the structure through an unusual angle. The front elevation already had everything I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. The small outbuilding beside it and the dry, treeless landscape keep the church firmly connected to the rough environment around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBodie is filled with structures that make the California Gold Rush era feel unusually tangible. Buildings remain standing where people once lived, worked and gathered, yet the activity that gave them purpose has disappeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast has always interested me. Here, the church still looks capable of welcoming a congregation, but the streets around it belong to a town preserved from another time. Nothing about the building felt preserved or arranged. Weathered boards overlap one another, doors hang unevenly, windows sit behind rough shutters, and an old chair remains near the centre of the porch. The house seems caught somewhere between still being recognizable as a home and gradually becoming part of the landscape around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was secondary to what interested me—the warped metal, aged timber, deep doorway, rough grass and the extraordinary accumulation of texture across the facade. The darker treatment also gives the open interior a sense of depth without trying to make the scene artificially dramatic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned places because time becomes visible in them. That irregularity is precisely what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the building straight on because the facade already had a strong structure. Vertical support beams divide the frame, horizontal boards create repetition, and the central doorway gives the photograph an anchor. Behind the glass, patterned curtains remain visible, introducing an unexpectedly delicate detail among all the heavy timber and weathered surfaces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white concentrates everything on texture. Splintered boards, cracked plaster, worn paint and dark gaps between the timbers become more important than colour. The building feels tactile, almost as though every surface has recorded another season of exposure and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me about rural architecture is rarely perfection. I am much more drawn to buildings that reveal how they were made, altered and repaired over time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis farmhouse had that quality everywhere. The boards, doors and windows do not feel decorative; they feel practical and accumulated. Its body is worn and faded, with the towing rig still rising behind it, while two smaller damaged vehicles sit close beside it. Farther back, another old truck is tucked beneath a simple roof beside a weathered wooden building. Nothing in the scene feels arranged. The vehicles, sheds, trees and rough ground have simply accumulated into a picture of use, neglect and passing years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was not what interested me here. The photograph is really about texture: aged boards, corrugated roofs, worn metal, grass and the dense canopy of trees surrounding everything. Removing the colour lets those surfaces and shapes carry more of the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the relationship between the vehicles and the buildings. Neither feels separate from the other. Together they suggest a rural working place that has changed gradually, leaving older machines and structures behind rather than clearing them away. Narrow horizontal slats run down both panels, divided by upright frames and a darker central seam. Their color shifts from red-brown to nearly black in the recessed spaces. Around them, the wall has a much less regular surface: pale patches interrupt the yellow, and darker marks gather closer to the sill.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThat contrast is what drew me in. The window has an orderly design, but neither the wood nor the plaster presents a perfectly even finish. Small changes of tone make the facade feel specific. The long ledge below adds a strong horizontal base, while the cropped view allows the shutter panels to reach beyond the upper edge of the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI have always enjoyed looking closely at Tuscany’s buildings, especially details that can be passed without notice. Leaves gather in several bright patches, leaving portions of the limbs exposed between them. On the right, a heavier trunk bends as it rises, with sparse foliage allowing its rough surface and branching outline to remain clear. The two trees have enough in common to belong together, yet neither simply repeats the other.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI included the dry ground and smaller growth beneath them so the image keeps its desert setting. Fallen leaves and low shrubs carry quieter brown and gold tones, while the sky opens between the two crowns. Looking upward from this position makes the trunks feel substantial without removing the landscape around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me is how autumn reveals both color and structure. Where leaves remain, they bring warmth; where they have thinned, the tree becomes a more intricate drawing against the sky. This photograph holds both conditions at once. In monochrome, the pale cliffs and darker buildings remain distinct without competing colours.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI am interested in what can still be observed at a place like this. The remaining walls, worn boards, and damaged roofs show the condition of the farmstead, but they do not tell me who lived here or why they left. The photograph leaves that history open rather than supplying an imagined account. What it does preserve is the relationship between human structures and a substantial landscape. The small group of buildings draws a closer look, while the broad background makes their isolation apparent.
