A vintage car sits above the salon, Route 66 shields appear across the facade, and an old Route 66 Grill sign still stands beside the neighbouring building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eColour is a huge part of the photograph. The salon is painted in soft pink, cream and yellow, with bright magenta and green stripes running across the front. Next door, turquoise trim and faded peach walls add another layer of Southwestern character. All of it sits beneath an enormous, intensely blue Arizona sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep the wider street scene rather than isolate a single sign or detail. The empty road, chain-link fence, old vehicles, weathered signage and trees behind the buildings help place the salon within the slightly improvised visual language of historic Route 66.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what has always interested me about this highway. The attraction is not one particular landmark. It is the accumulation of diners, garages, motels, old cars, handmade signs and businesses that developed their own personalities to catch the attention of passing travellers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDeSoto's Salon had that personality in abundance. The restrained background leaves room for the red to stand out, but its small irregularities keep the view from becoming too neat.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat stays with me is the unanswered question of the placement. The photograph shows the scene without explaining why a bathtub belongs outside a motel. That visual puzzle gives the image its humor and character. The checkerboard floor brings a final pattern beneath the bumper, its red and pale squares giving the lower frame a warm base.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, this is a photograph of roadside enthusiasm expressed through an unusual display. Here, the truck’s surface has the irregular markings that make a close view rewarding: pale patches, dark streaks, and lettering that has become difficult to read.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe viewpoint gives those details room while keeping the motor court in the scene. The truck fills the left side; the stone-faced building sits farther back on the right. Between them, the front wheel, parking lines, and pavement lead into the distance. An antenna rises through the sky, balancing the heavier shapes below.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWorking in monochrome puts the emphasis on those relationships. The whitewall tyre forms a bright ring against the darker wheel, and the building’s stonework answers the mottled bodywork. I like that the photograph stays rooted in an ordinary roadside encounter. Faded reds, pale lettering, and rust-brown metal form a muted colour palette. Some surfaces are deeply scarred; others still carry readable logos. The contrast between those surviving words and the surrounding wear is a large part of the photograph’s appeal for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRather than isolate one pump, I kept the crowded arrangement intact. The diagonal railroad crossbuck cuts across the straighter pump faces, while the low chassis gives the foreground a broad horizontal shape. The roof presses down above everything, making the collection feel contained without making it orderly. There is always another piece to find behind the first one.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me is the accumulation of familiar roadside forms. These were practical objects, designed to direct travellers or serve vehicles, and their lettering still gives them a distinct presence. In the photograph, they also become an arrangement of texture, shape, and worn colour. I was heading towards Wave Rock when it stopped me, and the unexpected sight became one of my favourite roadside encounters from that trip.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIts stretched-out legs, oversized head and yellow chain mane give it a wonderfully improvised character. The rounded metal body retains the shape of the barrels, while smaller pieces become ears, hooves and facial details. A red-painted cap and blue markings add just enough colour to make the face stand apart from the pale metal.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe sculpture is supported by a tall blue pole, clearly visible beneath it. That practical detail does not spoil the illusion for me. It becomes part of the joke: a homemade horse suspended above the ground, committed to its unlikely flight.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI framed it against the sky, leaving the surrounding landscape out of the photograph. The open blue background gives the extended legs plenty of room and makes the assembled shapes easy to read. A little wispy cloud behind the head keeps the setting natural without distracting from the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis photograph carries the humour that drew me to the Tin Horse Highway in the first place. Its wide canopy reaches across much of the photograph, held above the roadway by a slender, curving trunk. I photographed the scene in black and white, letting the tree’s distinct form stand clearly against the softer hills behind it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAt first, the tree seems to occupy the whole landscape. Its branches spread almost horizontally before dividing into fine clusters of leaves, creating an open shelter over the edge of the road. The light on the trunk gives it a strong line through the centre of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLooking longer reveals the smaller details below. Simple roadside stalls sit close to the tree, and the road bends past them towards the left. Beyond, planted slopes and darker wooded areas lead into a series of distant ridges. These human traces matter to me: they make the landscape a place people use and pass through, rather than an isolated view of a tree.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep that balance between a striking natural shape and the everyday setting around it. The monochrome tones allow the foreground to remain distinct while the mountains gradually soften with distance. As a print, the image offers a layered view of rural India, with the spreading canopy providing a memorable focal point. Plants crowd the building’s edges, with taller weeds and shrubs spreading toward the lot. Loose material and small remnants lie across the foreground. Farther back, another curve leads uphill through the houses. Those lines help the eye move into the photograph, where small roofs and buildings appear at different distances among bare branches and darker evergreens. I find the mixture of settlement and forest particularly interesting from this angle. The village remains recognisable through its roads and homes, but the trees occupy much more of the view.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSnow makes the spaces between the branches easier to distinguish, creating a fine pattern of light and dark across the hillside. Near the lower edge, a long dark structure introduces a more continuous line beneath the scattered rooftops. Beyond the village, wooded ridges extend toward a low, quiet horizon. The black and white treatment keeps these layers connected without relying on seasonal colour. For me, the photograph offers a broader sense of place than a single street view could provide. Each sign has its own character within the larger display.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe broadest lettering runs along the roofline, while smaller boards fill the spaces below. A pale sign advertising Utah fresh fruit sits near the centre, standing out against the brown timber. To the right, narrower signs add more words and different letter shapes. I like how the image can be read in several directions: across the upper strip, down toward the doorway or from one painted panel to another. The repeated horizontal logs give that busy arrangement a steady underlying pattern.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA yellow and red fuel sign rises above the left side, with trees and a pale blue sky behind it. Below, the guardrail and roadway introduce simpler bands across the foreground. Those ordinary roadside elements give the storefront context while leaving its signs as the main attraction.
