I photographed the medieval stone complex in black and white beneath a broad overcast sky, letting its broken walls, central tower, arches, and rough masonry carry the image.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy wife and I came across the abbey while travelling through Ireland in 2019, only about a 15-minute walk from the much better-known Rock of Cashel. That contrast stayed with me. The Rock draws the attention, yet just beyond it sits this extraordinary ruin in the open countryside, quieter and far less imposing in the way it announces itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is built around that sense of isolation. A wide field separates me from the structure, while the empty sky gives the abbey room to stand almost as a piece of sculpture. The surviving walls still reveal the shape of the original Gothic church, but sections have collapsed into irregular stone forms. In black and white, those textures become more pronounced: weathered blocks, dark openings, broken rooflines, and the soft grass surrounding them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHore Abbey began as a Benedictine monastery before passing to the Cistercians in the 13th century, becoming the last pre-Reformation Cistercian foundation in Ireland. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. I wanted to photograph it directly, without trying to dramatize the structure through an unusual angle. The front elevation already had everything I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. The small outbuilding beside it and the dry, treeless landscape keep the church firmly connected to the rough environment around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBodie is filled with structures that make the California Gold Rush era feel unusually tangible. Buildings remain standing where people once lived, worked and gathered, yet the activity that gave them purpose has disappeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast has always interested me. Here, the church still looks capable of welcoming a congregation, but the streets around it belong to a town preserved from another time. Each facade seems to belong to a slightly different architectural language—dark, heavily ornamented masonry on the left, a domed structure rising through the centre, and the lighter, more decorative building facing it from across the square.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep that entire relationship in the frame rather than concentrate on a single building. The broad paving in the foreground creates distance, allowing the architecture to unfold gradually as the eye moves deeper into the scene. Bicycles line one side, cars occupy the narrow passage ahead, and a few people cross the square, giving just enough scale to understand the size of the surrounding structures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast sky suited the scene. Its soft light reveals the stonework without harsh shadows, while the subdued colour keeps attention on the elaborate facades, windows, domes and sculptural details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am often more interested in the spaces between important buildings than in photographing landmarks individually. A square like this shows how architecture functions together—how different structures, streets and public spaces accumulate into the character of an old European city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that layering is what makes the photograph interesting. Their amber lighting separates them from the deepening shadows below and gives the entire structure a remarkable presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept a generous amount of sky in the composition because its colour mattered. Soft orange and brown tones spread across the upper half of the frame, creating a restrained backdrop rather than competing with the architecture. Below, the modern city remains visible in layers of rooftops, windows and scattered lights, giving the mosque both scale and context.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was that relationship between the monumental and the everyday. The mosque dominates the skyline, yet it is still embedded within the dense fabric of Istanbul rather than standing apart from it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDusk is often when a city changes character most quickly. Details disappear, artificial lights begin to define the architecture, and familiar buildings take on a completely different weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat transition is what I wanted to hold onto here. Pulling back gave the temple room among the surrounding buildings instead of isolating it as a single monument. Its rounded dome and upright columns stand clearly above the treeline, but the smaller structures along the shore contribute their own rhythm of roofs, windows and shaded walls.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the foreground, a series of markers breaks up the rippled surface of the lagoon. Their spacing leads the eye across the water toward the shore, creating a quieter counterpoint to the detail in the architecture. The grey sky gives the dome a simple backdrop and leaves the waterfront as the busiest part of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings those relationships forward. Above it, curved painted shapes and darker outlines form a more flowing pattern; below, rectangular sections give the wall a steadier structure. The scratches cross both areas, with some fine enough to resemble threads and others broad enough to stand out immediately. I like how the underlying arrangement remains readable even where the surface has become crowded with lines.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe worn paint creates further changes in tone. Pale areas open across the centre and lower left, while stronger red sections hold the upper part of the frame. A darker panel on the right adds weight to the lower edge. Faces from theatrical advertisements stretch and repeat. Reds, yellows and blues run into one another. Even recognizable pieces of the street become difficult to place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat uncertainty is what makes the photograph work for me. It sits somewhere between city photography and abstraction. I know I am looking at Manhattan, but the familiar details have been rearranged by the surface of the building into something much less literal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe strongest part of the image is the colour. Broadway already has an extraordinary visual density, and here the mirrored exterior compresses much of that energy into a single frame. Nothing stays perfectly straight. Lines tilt, faces distort and blocks of colour seem to move through the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to scenes where ordinary architecture unexpectedly changes what I see. Pale green curves separate and connect the groups of figures. I was drawn to how those lines guide the eye from one scene to another, making the surface feel both ordered and densely varied.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere is a great deal to notice within the close view. Some figures stand alone, others gather in small groups, and little architectural forms appear among them. Hands, faces, garments, and borders each add another level of detail. Below them, the wall becomes increasingly difficult to separate from the leaves and stems covering it. I framed the building from the graveyard, bringing a row of differently shaped headstones into the foreground. Their upright forms repeat the tower on a smaller scale.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe square composition holds that upward movement without excluding the grass at the base. Dark foliage gives weight to the left side, while clouds leave more open space around the tower. In monochrome, the texture of the stones, the mass of ivy and the markings on the headstones become parts of the same tonal landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI found the meeting of ruin and growth compelling here. The church remains recognizable, but its edges soften where plants take over. Rather than assigning stories to the people commemorated in the graveyard, I wanted to show the place as I encountered it. Narrow window divisions rise and branch near the top, while small decorative forms continue along the roofline above. Below the glass, the entrance has its own pointed arch and carved surround. I like how the photograph offers those different scales of looking: the whole façade first, then the finer patterns within the window and doorway. The black and white treatment makes the pale stone and darker glass distinct without separating them from the rest of the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI left some of the setting around the chapel. A large tree occupies the left side, neighbouring buildings appear to the right, and a broad lawn lies in front. Their lower shapes allow the towers to remain prominent, while the clouds keep the sky from becoming an empty backdrop. Looking at the finished photograph, my attention returns to the balance between the two towers and the single large window. A haloed figure remains more clearly defined at the lower left; another is partly visible through the missing areas on the right. Fine cracks and lifted edges add a smaller pattern across the wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe light was soft and steady when I made the photograph, allowing those subtle transitions and rough surfaces to remain distinct. What I find compelling is the relationship between a recognizable religious image and the fragments surrounding it. Large arched windows carry fine grids of glazing, while round openings appear higher up. Pale stone is interrupted by darker blocks, creating a visible pattern across the walls. The central clock and the smaller upper features give the eye several stopping points as it moves toward the lantern at the top.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the balance between the building’s substantial form and its more delicate carved edges. Projecting cornices cast narrow shadows, helping separate each level of the facade. The side towers sit below the main dome and keep its height in perspective.
