A street lamp stands between a window and doorway, adding a slender shape among the broader rectangles.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white draws my attention to those relationships. The pale frontage on the left contrasts with the darker wall beside it, making the division between the buildings easy to follow. Window panes create small repeated forms within the larger openings, while curved ornament interrupts their straight lines. The paving along the bottom gives both buildings a common base.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI enjoy photographs in which a city can be recognised through its smaller architectural decisions. The row of tall buildings offered the architectural rhythm I wanted to photograph: repeated windows below a roofline that changes from one facade to the next. I made the image in 2013 and kept it in black and white to give shape and surface their full weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe nearest walls rise almost to the top of the vertical frame. Narrow windows form regular stacks, while drainpipes and the boundaries between buildings introduce longer lines. Curved gables break that order above, each with a slightly different profile. Farther along the row, a flatter roofline and a more decorated gable change the pace again.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI framed the buildings as a connected frontage without losing their individual character. Some surfaces are pale and smooth; others show mottled plaster and darker marks. Small signs, lower doorways and ground floor windows bring the view back to street level. This tall brick building caught my attention from across the water. Its central tower rises above rows of windows, with metal arms extending from both sides and a small platform projecting from the front. My black and white photograph keeps the structure centred beneath a broad, clouded sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe repeated openings give the building a strong rhythm, though their different coverings and dark interiors interrupt that regularity. The brickwork carries a patchwork of tones, with pale areas around several windows and darker marks beneath the projecting fittings. At the base, an arched doorway sits just above the waterfront edge. Lower walls and partly open structures extend to either side, giving the tower its setting within a larger area rather than isolating it as a single architectural detail.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI included the water because its softer reflections change the balance of the photograph. Below the rigid façade and dock edge, the building becomes a broken pattern of vertical tones. The monochrome treatment brings the brick texture, window repetition and heavy sky together without losing that contrast. For someone interested in industrial architecture or abandoned urban places, the image offers a detailed record of a Gdansk waterfront scene as I encountered it.
