The entire frame becomes a collection of surfaces: old glass, splintered boards, crumbling plaster, brick, faded paint and weathered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something about Havana's aging architecture that I find endlessly photographic. I don't see decay simply as deterioration. I see layers. It was one of those overlooked industrial corners that most people would pass without a second glance. I tend to stop at places like this because the surface tells the story. Here, the wall is not one colour or one texture. It shifts from deep brown brick to faded green, chalky white, and soft lavender-grey, with vertical streaks that seem to record years of rain and exposure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition works because of the tension between structure and collapse. The door and the vertical seams in the wall give the photograph order, but the broken bricks, splintered wood, and scattered rubble along the bottom edge interrupt that order immediately. Even the vertical column near the centre seems to separate two different histories of the same interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned industrial spaces because they are full of compositions that were never designed to be photographs. Nothing here was arranged for appearance. The staircase existed simply to move people from one level to another, yet once the factory fell silent, its shape became the dominant visual element. The lower part of the photograph is busy with awnings, signs, a streetlamp, a parked scooter, and the practical details of everyday city life. Above that, everything becomes more ordered. Rows of windows repeat across several buildings, while the roofline steps gradually higher before disappearing into a pale sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe contrast between the facades is what makes the photograph work for me. Some are restrained and almost severe. Others carry ornamental plasterwork, soft colour, and more traditional proportions. A darker, more contemporary building interrupts the sequence without breaking it. Together they create a layered streetscape rather than a single architectural subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am often drawn to buildings this way—not because one structure is spectacular, but because several ordinary facades begin to form a larger composition. Here, the repetition, subtle differences, muted colour palette, and upward sweep of the street created the photograph. Not simply a sunset over the Atlantic, but that brief period when daylight has nearly disappeared and everything seems to soften—the rocks, the water, the beach and even the houses in the distance. From here, the city spreads outward in layers—flat rooftops, faded facades, church domes, water tanks, weathered masonry and buildings from different periods all compressed into one dense urban landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe large rust-coloured dome on the left immediately anchors the view. From there, my eye moves through cream, yellow and white buildings toward the smaller orange dome near the centre, then across a maze of red roof edges, patched surfaces and occasional flashes of turquoise and green. Nothing feels perfectly ordered. That is part of what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHavana often photographs beautifully because age is visible everywhere. Surfaces have faded, buildings have been altered, and the rooftops show years of use and adaptation. Yet ornate architecture still rises through all of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the photograph to hold that contradiction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pale sky gives the city just enough breathing room, while the foreground remains crowded with texture and detail. From a distance, the photograph reads as a broad Havana cityscape. There is no dramatic landmark and almost no colour demanding attention. Instead, the photograph depends on atmosphere—the dense fog, the muted dawn light, the isolated trees and the broad areas of open water and sky. Even the distant shoreline seems uncertain, appearing and disappearing as the mist thickens across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition became a study in restraint. Most of the landscape has been stripped away, leaving the house and trees suspended between water and fog. Their reflections are imperfect and elongated, just strong enough to connect the shoreline to the darker foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMornings like this are one reason I like being out with a camera before the landscape fully wakes. Fog changes familiar places quickly. The salon is painted in soft pink, cream and yellow, with bright magenta and green stripes running across the front. Next door, turquoise trim and faded peach walls add another layer of Southwestern character. All of it sits beneath an enormous, intensely blue Arizona sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep the wider street scene rather than isolate a single sign or detail. Soft pink and orange reached the mountain peaks while cooler blues remained across the lake and lower landscape. Above everything, heavy clouds caught traces of the same pastel colour. Reflections beneath the tufa formations extend their shapes downward and create a visual balance between the rugged rock and the smooth surface of Mono Lake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been attracted to landscapes that feel slightly unfamiliar, and the tufa towers give Mono Lake that quality immediately. They look sculptural, almost improbable, particularly when separated by quiet water and viewed against the mountains beyond.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph is about that combination: unusual geology, open water, distant mountains and the fleeting colour of sunrise. The landscape already had everything it needed. This California landscape photograph follows that succession of colours through the eroded badlands rather than centring on one isolated formation.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe closest slopes look rounded, but their surfaces are scored with narrow lines. Farther back, sharper folds interrupt the pale bands. Darker triangular shapes create pauses among the lighter hills, giving the eye a few firm points in a scene filled with small changes of direction.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI stood above the landscape to make this view, keeping the repeating ridges across most of the frame. Their overlap is what makes the depth readable. Each layer hides a little of the next, while the broad basin and distant mountains introduce a different scale. Those cooler upper tones separate the far distance from the warmer earth in front.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the combination of severity and delicacy.
