The lake was almost perfectly still, turning the abandoned ship and its towering masts into a reflection beneath a sky filled with gold, amber and orange.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe ship is La Grande Hermine, but what interested me photographically wasn't simply its name or history. It was the extraordinary contrast between decay and beauty. The hull is weathered and deteriorating, sections of the old vessel have fallen away, and the bare masts and rigging reach into the sky without sails. Yet on this particular morning, the sunrise transformed everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI positioned myself low and close to the shoreline, allowing the ship to dominate the frame while still leaving room for the glowing sky and open water. The masts create strong geometric lines overhead, while their reflections stretch downward into the lake. Even the surrounding trees seem to frame the wreck, separating its dark, aging structure from the intense light behind it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something fascinating to me about objects that have outlived their original purpose. This ship was built to move through water, yet now it sits permanently grounded and slowly changing with time and weather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2019, but the scene itself felt strangely outside of time. The FDR Drive sweeps through the lower half of the frame, packed with cars moving toward Lower Manhattan, while the city rises behind it in a dense wall of towers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005, and I like what that date gives the image now. The traffic, architecture and skyline capture a particular New York, but the essential character of the city feels immediately familiar—the density, movement and almost relentless vertical growth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat drew me to this viewpoint was the compression. The highway, East River, bridge structure and tightly packed buildings all seem pushed together. There is very little empty space. Even in black and white, my eye keeps moving from one detail to another: cars filling the lanes, highway signs, windows, rooftops, older towers and the rigid grid of more modern buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe FDR Drive is especially important to the photograph. Without it, this would be another New York skyline. Instead, the stream of vehicles gives the image a sense of everyday life continuing beneath all that architecture. Thousands of people are moving through the city while the enormous buildings remain fixed above them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white helps hold those competing elements together. That was what drew me to this scene—the ordinary rush of Manhattan transformed by wet pavement and darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed from the sidewalk, looking down a corridor of tall buildings toward the traffic beyond. Taxis and cars crowd the street, a city bus works its way through them, and a few pedestrians move through the foreground. Yet the people remain almost anonymous, reduced to dark silhouettes against the reflected light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat makes the photograph work for me is the depth. The repeating streetlights gradually become smaller as they disappear down the avenue, pulling my eye deep into Manhattan. Above them, scattered office windows punctuate the darkness. Below, the wet sidewalk carries that light back toward the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white strips away the competing colors of New York and concentrates everything on light, shadow, movement and reflection. The brightest headlights become almost white against the surrounding darkness, while large portions of the buildings disappear into deep shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always enjoyed photographing cities after rain. Familiar streets become more cinematic, but nothing about the moment needs to be staged. Instead of everyone rushing through one of the busiest places in Manhattan, people simply sat down.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is crowded, but it doesn't feel frantic. People lounge in folding chairs, talk, watch the street or simply sit by themselves. Behind them is unmistakable Times Square—yellow taxis, pedestrians, construction equipment, traffic lights, towering buildings and an almost absurd concentration of signs and advertising. Even the New York Police Department station is buried within the visual chaos.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like photographs where there isn't necessarily one person who is the subject. Here, the people collectively become the subject. My eye can wander around the frame and discover dozens of small moments happening simultaneously.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph also has a personal connection for me. Later, during a workshop with legendary New York photographer Jay Maisel, I showed him this image. He stopped on it and commented on the uniqueness of the moment. That stayed with me because uniqueness is exactly what had made me raise my camera in the first place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTimes Square has been photographed millions of times. Finding a different photograph there is considerably harder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a brief period that summer, one of the world's most recognizable symbols of urban movement became somewhere people could simply pull up a chair and do absolutely nothing. I found this one while walking the city—a battered old window surrounded by cracked plaster, exposed masonry, peeling paint and years of improvised repairs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was the color that first pulled me in. The faded yellow wall is interrupted by remnants of turquoise paint and the deep red of the original window frame. Then the details begin to take over. Broken panes have been covered with mismatched pieces of wood. Sections of the wall have fallen away completely, exposing bricks and rough construction underneath. Nothing quite lines up anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the wall straight on because I didn't want perspective to distract from those textures. The entire frame becomes a collection of surfaces: old glass, splintered boards, crumbling plaster, brick, faded paint and weathered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something about Havana's aging architecture that I find endlessly photographic. I don't see decay simply as deterioration. I see layers. Repairs are made, paint is added and disappears, windows are patched rather than replaced, and the building continues to change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005. Tall windows have been patched with mismatched pieces of wood, paint has faded into layers of yellow and green, and laundry hangs openly across the upper floor. Then, at precisely the right moment, a man on a bicycle entered the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat small figure changed the photograph for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis red shirt immediately separates him from the muted colors of the building, while the bicycle gives movement to an otherwise completely static facade. He is dwarfed by the architecture behind him, yet my eye goes directly to him. Without the cyclist, I would have a photograph about an aging Havana building. With him, it becomes a photograph about life continuing around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI particularly like the contrast between the grandeur the building must once have possessed and the way it is being lived in now. Ornamental columns and decorative details remain, but so do crumbling plaster, boarded windows, exposed masonry and improvised repairs. Laundry hanging above the street makes the building feel inhabited rather than abandoned.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are the scenes that keep drawing me back to street photography. I can find the location and recognize the possibilities, but I can't manufacture the moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe architecture gave me the setting. Havana gave me the color and texture. Tall office buildings crowd against one another, windows repeat in rigid grids, sunlight cuts across some facades while others disappear almost completely into shadow. Through a narrow opening between the towers, another ornate building appears in the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat small glimpse is one of my favorite parts of the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is no traditional skyline here and very little sky. Instead, I wanted the architecture itself to fill the frame. The buildings overlap, interrupt and partially conceal one another, creating the visual density that I associate so strongly with New York City.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white makes those relationships even stronger. Color would separate the individual buildings; monochrome pulls them together and emphasizes geometry, contrast and repetition. Bright stone sits beside almost black facades, while hundreds of windows create patterns across the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always enjoyed looking for these compressed views in Manhattan. New York is so frequently photographed through its famous landmarks that it can be easy to overlook the extraordinary architecture packed between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph isn't really about identifying a particular skyscraper. From this perspective, the buildings begin to lose their individual identities. They become an arrangement of vertical lines, repeating windows, curved forms and hard geometric edges.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat abstraction is what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe central building immediately separates itself from the surrounding towers. Its stepped architecture and curved facade contrast with the severe vertical grids behind it, while the arched structure across the rooftop introduces another unexpected pattern. Everything feels incredibly dense. One building seems to push against the next, with almost no breathing room between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because color wasn't important to what I was seeing. This photograph is about architecture and structure—the way sunlight strikes one facade while the neighboring building falls into deep shadow, the repetition of hundreds of windows, and the enormous scale created by stacking all those architectural elements together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNew York gives me endless opportunities to photograph famous buildings, but I'm often more interested in fragments of the city. A different viewpoint can turn familiar architecture into something much less obvious.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, Manhattan becomes almost a study in design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are no streets, people or recognizable pieces of the skyline to establish scale. A blue station wagon fills the foreground while an open-top classic car travels ahead, its passengers visible above the deep red bodywork. Another old car appears farther down the street. Together they lead my eye directly into the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me is how naturally these remarkable vehicles fit into the scene. In almost any other city, a car like this would attract attention at a show or sit polished in someone's collection. In Havana, these aging American cars are woven into everyday life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe architecture matters just as much. Tall, weathered buildings press closely against the narrow street. Balconies, old stonework, barred windows, overhead wires and traditional street lamps surround the cars. Nothing feels staged or arranged for the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also like the restrained color in this photograph. The faded blue of the station wagon and the dark red convertible stand apart from the pale, timeworn buildings without overpowering them. The cars provide the color; Havana provides the texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what I remember most about photographing Cuba. History never seemed confined to museums or monuments. Bodie is a genuine American ghost town, and what fascinated me was how much of the place still felt intact. I wasn't looking at a recreation or a movie set. These buildings had simply survived, weathering decade after decade in the dry California landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe contrast between the two structures immediately caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the left, the brick building still feels remarkably formal, with its repeating arched windows and carefully laid masonry. Beside it, the wooden building has aged very differently. Its boards are bleached and scarred, the storefront windows have darkened, and a large faded sign remains barely visible across the upper facade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI composed the photograph straight on because I wanted the buildings to stand almost like a portrait. Side by side. Nothing modern interrupts them. Even the empty land stretching away on either side reinforces the isolation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white seemed inevitable here. It concentrates my attention on the cracked wood, old brick, dusty glass and the extraordinary differences in texture between the two buildings. It also removes another layer of time. Without color, I find it much harder to immediately place the photograph in the present.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what I remember most about Bodie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe town doesn't feel rebuilt for visitors. It feels interrupted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese buildings are still standing where people once worked, gathered and watched the town outside their windows. The people disappeared long ago. I wanted the sculpture and the city behind it to work together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom this position, the polished surface bends Chicago into an entirely different landscape. Buildings stretch and curve across the steel, the horizon folds inward, and the people scattered through Millennium Park become tiny figures inside the reflection. Behind it, the rigid geometry of the surrounding architecture creates almost the opposite effect—straight lines, repeated windows and hard rectangular forms surrounding this enormous fluid shape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in 2011 and chose black and white because it strips away much of the visual noise. What remains is shape, scale, architecture and reflection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI especially like the small human figures beneath the sculpture. Without them, it would be difficult to appreciate just how substantial Cloud Gate really is. Some are crossing quickly, others seem completely unhurried, and one woman walks through the middle of the street carrying an open umbrella.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe people are what make the photograph, but the city surrounding them matters just as much.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTall Manhattan buildings rise tightly along both sides of the street, creating a corridor that pulls my eye deep into New York. Vans, taxis and delivery vehicles crowd the intersection. Streetlights, signs, scaffolding and windows fill nearly every remaining space. There is very little visual quiet anywhere in the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because it brings all of that complexity together. Clothing, vehicles and architecture stop competing through color, and the photograph becomes about movement, repetition, scale and the extraordinary density of the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is that there isn't one obvious protagonist. My eye keeps moving from person to person, discovering small gestures and separate stories throughout the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the kind of New York photograph I enjoy making most. That relationship matters to me. The weathered boards, broken edges, leaning lines, and dense growth all compete within the frame, while the open space on the right gives the eye somewhere to move before returning to the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for this photograph because the subject is really about texture and structure. Removing color puts more emphasis on the grain of the wood, the pale grasses, the mass of leaves climbing over the barn, and the deep shadow inside the damaged lower section. Even the heavy cloud cover becomes part of the mood without overwhelming the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the tension between something once built for practical use and the landscape gradually reclaiming it. It is a quiet rural scene, but there is nothing tidy about it. By then, vegetation had begun to take over the entrance, weeds were pushing up along the base, and the garage door and narrow side window carried the wear of years. What fascinated me was the tension between neglect and design. The concrete-block walls are plain and utilitarian, yet the tiered parapet above them creates a strong geometric silhouette that refuses to disappear quietly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for the scene. Without colour, the photograph becomes about shape, surface, and contrast: pale masonry against dark foliage, the irregular panels of the old door, the deep window opening, and even the loose wire dropping down the facade. Nothing is polished. That is exactly what gives the photograph its character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am drawn to places like this because they are easy to overlook. They are rarely landmarks and almost never destinations. They simply sit beside the road until age, weather, and vegetation slowly change them. This little Indiana garage had reached that point where the ordinary had become distinctive. One massive concrete opening leads to another, then another, drawing the eye steadily through the abandoned factory until the architecture seems to disappear into darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this industrial ruin in Ontario, where years of neglect had stripped the interior down to its basic structure. Rough concrete columns dominate the foreground. Beyond them, worn floorboards, scattered debris, broken material and a large leaning panel interrupt what was once an orderly working space. There is very little left to soften the building. That emptiness is part of what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because the photograph is really about structure, texture and depth. Without colour competing for attention, the repeated rectangular forms become much stronger. Light catching the edges of the concrete separates each successive opening, while the darker recesses keep pulling the photograph farther back into the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been fascinated by abandoned places because they reveal architecture in a way occupied buildings rarely do. Once the machinery, people and daily activity disappear, the bones of the place become visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, those bones are almost geometric. The heavy vertical columns, horizontal beams and receding doorways create a surprisingly ordered composition inside a space otherwise defined by decay. That simplicity was what caught me here on Florida's Intracoastal Waterway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was on the water early in the summer of 2009 when the entire scene seemed suspended in haze. The sun was already pushing through the mist, but instead of clearing it immediately, the light spread softly across the sky and water. Trees along both banks became dark silhouettes, while a distant bridge appeared almost weightless in the centre of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe water was remarkably calm. Only small ripples disturbed the surface, catching fragments of warm light beneath the brighter sky. From the boat, there was very little sense of movement beyond the quiet lapping of water. The usual detail of the landscape had disappeared into the mist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted the photograph to preserve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRather than emphasizing the bridge or shoreline, I allowed the atmosphere to dominate. The darker trees frame the scene naturally, guiding the eye toward the opening in the distance, while the warm reflection on the water balances the bright morning light above.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFlorida is often photographed for colour, beaches and intense sunlight. This was something much quieter. New York street art was everywhere, but this particular combination stopped me. Someone had created the figure on the right, another face occupied the wall above it, and layers of unrelated graffiti had accumulated around both. Nothing was designed as a complete composition, yet together it worked.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat accidental quality is what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in black and white, allowing the brickwork, painted lines, dark doorways and graphic street art to compete on equal terms. The photograph is visually busy, but the missing head gives the eye somewhere to settle. Even the No Parking sign and pole slicing vertically through the frame become part of the disorder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOver the years I began calling the photograph Lost Head. It became one of those images people remembered and, later, tried to locate for themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNew York constantly changes. Walls are repainted, buildings disappear and street art can vanish overnight. Behind it, a taxi, pedestrians, towers and storefronts remain present, but the motion blur turns them into fragments of the city rather than competing subjects.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me here is the contrast between detail and movement. The streetcar doors, windows, mirrors and front lights remain strong enough to hold the eye, while the streetscape rushes outward toward the edges of the frame. Even the architecture begins to lose its solidity. Toronto becomes less about individual buildings and more about speed, congestion and constant movement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe red of the streetcar carries through the softer colours around it, making the vehicle feel almost suspended inside the blur.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always liked photographs that show familiar places differently. A Toronto streetcar is an everyday sight, something thousands of people pass without thinking about it. The sun has pulled warm oranges, browns and silvers from the aged boards, while the pale grass spreads across the foreground and into the distance. Utility poles remain standing beside the buildings, adding another vertical rhythm to a place where almost everything else feels as though it is slowly returning to the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is the sky. It occupies nearly half the frame—clean blue broken by brilliant white clouds—and gives the photograph an openness that contrasts with the worn structures below. Instead of making the scene feel gloomy, the light exposes every crack, warped board and rough surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGhost towns fascinate me because they leave so much visible without explaining everything. I can walk through a place like this and see evidence of ordinary lives everywhere, yet the people themselves are gone.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to hold onto here. Not simply an old building or wagon, but the peculiar stillness of a town that once had purpose and activity. The objects remain. The landscape remains. Two maple leaf emblems sit high on the gables, subtle but unmistakably Canadian. Signs advertising fishing rod rentals and departure times add another layer, revealing that these simple structures remain practical places rather than merely picturesque buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also liked the irregularity of the row. The sheds overlap and step backward from one another, each slightly different in size and proportion. Utility poles and overhead wires interrupt the clean geometry, while the wet pavement and subdued sky give the scene the quiet atmosphere of a damp Maritime day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is nothing grand about these buildings, and that is precisely why I stopped. They are functional, weathered and ordinary, shaped by years of exposure and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, Prince Edward Island is not only beaches and red cliffs. Scenes like this reveal another side of the island—working buildings, fishing traditions and architecture created because it was needed. The first arch is massive and heavy, filling most of the frame, yet every opening beyond it becomes progressively smaller. The eye has nowhere else to go. It is pulled straight through the architecture toward the centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition deliberately precise because the geometry was already doing everything I needed. Curved brickwork sits against straight vertical walls, irregular handmade surfaces against an almost mathematical sequence of arches. Even the pale floor becomes part of the perspective, narrowing as it travels deeper into Fort Jefferson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe colour was equally important. Warm browns, reds and muted ochres reveal the variation in the old brickwork rather than reducing it to a single tone. Light entering the corridor catches certain surfaces while others fall into shadow, giving each successive arch its own subtle separation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often photograph architecture for exactly this reason. A structure can become something entirely different when I stop looking at the whole building and concentrate on one repeating element. Thick roots dropped from above, twisted across the wall and gathered around the doorway until architecture and vegetation seemed inseparable.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed it in black and white because colour was not what held the scene together. It was texture, shadow and shape. The rough masonry, dark bark, fallen leaves and battered door all occupied nearly the same tonal world, which made the roots feel even more dominant. They do not simply frame the entrance; they seem to press against it from every direction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing was arranged. I did not move branches, clear leaves or try to make the doorway more visible. Its partial concealment was the reason I stopped.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat stays with me is the tension between something built to endure and something growing without any concern for the structure around it. A fortress suggests permanence, strength and control. The roots suggest the opposite—slow, persistent change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHavana is full of layers, but this was one of the quieter ones. No crowd, no traffic, no obvious landmark announcing itself. Just an old door, heavy stone and trees steadily changing the wall around them. The truck had everything I look for in an old vehicle—faded turquoise paint, exposed rust, dents, worn chrome and the kind of patina that cannot be manufactured convincingly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Chevrolet 3100 badge remains visible on the side, while the broad grille and rounded fenders immediately place the truck in another era. A spare tire rests against the side, and behind it the Sinclair sign introduces another piece of roadside Americana. Beyond that, the desert cliffs rise from the landscape, catching just enough remaining light to separate them from the evening sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat made me stop, though, was the combination of the truck and the sunset. Either subject could have carried a photograph on its own. Together they created something much more evocative.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to vehicles that show their age honestly. Perfect restorations can be beautiful, but this truck had history written across every surface. It turned the bright signs into blocks of light, deepened the shadows in the building facade and kept attention on gesture, typography and structure rather than colour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStreet photography often depends on noticing the work behind the spectacle. Someone has to change the sign, replace the letters, keep the doors open and prepare the city for whatever happens next. Surfaces have faded, buildings have been altered, and the rooftops show years of use and adaptation. He stands almost in silhouette, surrounded by objects, handwritten details and accumulated pieces of the bar’s personality. Above him, the currency creates a dense, irregular canopy that seems to press down into the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for this photograph. It reduces all that visual clutter into light, shadow, texture and shape. The refrigerator glows on one side, a table lamp burns brightly on the other, and the darker centre of the room holds the bartender between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most about places like this is how much character can collect in a relatively small space. Nothing feels designed for a photograph. The bottles, old automotive pieces, hanging money and worn counter have simply accumulated into something distinctive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to keep. The shed is wonderfully imperfect. Boards have aged at different rates, the large wooden door is worn and uneven, and the small window carries its own collection of marks and reflections. Even the utility wires crossing above the roof contribute to the straightforward character of the place. Nothing has been cleaned up for the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe restrained colour gives the image another layer. The red maple leaf remains recognizable without overpowering the weathered wood around it. Against the nearly monochrome building and overcast sky, it becomes both a visual focal point and an unmistakably Canadian element.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to buildings that reveal their history through their surfaces. Along the coast of Prince Edward Island, working sheds like this are part of the landscape rather than architectural showpieces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to preserve here: a simple fishing building, worn by the Atlantic environment, photographed without trying to make it prettier than it was. From that position, the buildings stop behaving like individual skyscrapers. They become lines, angles and repeating grids pushing inward from every edge of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe open blue sky was essential. It creates an enormous central space while the towers surround it without ever completely closing it off. Each building has a different architectural rhythm—rows of square windows, reflective glass, pale stone, darker facades—and the extreme viewpoint exaggerates those differences.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in 2014, but what interested me was less the identity of any particular tower than the geometry created by having so many of them concentrated in one part of Toronto. Several belong to Canada's major banks, making this cluster inseparable from the character of the city's financial core.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLooking upward also changes the sense of scale. At street level these buildings are part of a busy downtown environment. From directly below, they become almost abstract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat transformation is what I wanted to capture. New York's skyline has changed considerably since then, making this not only a cityscape but a record of Manhattan at a particular moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to the compression of buildings along the waterfront. Towers of different heights and periods rise almost shoulder to shoulder, creating a dense rhythm of windows, vertical lines and architectural shapes. Construction cranes appear among them, another reminder that New York is rarely finished.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe river gives the photograph room to breathe. Its broad horizontal surface separates me from the city while the skyline forms a solid band beneath the enormous sky. Above it, the clouds become darker and more complicated, pressing down visually on the buildings and giving the scene a weight that would disappear on a clear day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white was an obvious choice for me. Colour would have added information I did not need. In monochrome, the photograph becomes about structure, weather, scale and the subtle tonal differences between stone, glass, water and cloud.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have photographed New York many times, but the city is never quite the same twice. Buildings rise, skylines change and familiar views slowly become historical. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. I wanted to photograph it directly, without trying to dramatize the structure through an unusual angle. The front elevation already had everything I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. The small outbuilding beside it and the dry, treeless landscape keep the church firmly connected to the rough environment around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBodie is filled with structures that make the California Gold Rush era feel unusually tangible. Buildings remain standing where people once lived, worked and gathered, yet the activity that gave them purpose has disappeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast has always interested me. Here, the church still looks capable of welcoming a congregation, but the streets around it belong to a town preserved from another time. Nothing about the building felt preserved or arranged. Weathered boards overlap one another, doors hang unevenly, windows sit behind rough shutters, and an old chair remains near the centre of the porch. The house seems caught somewhere between still being recognizable as a home and gradually becoming part of the landscape around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was secondary to what interested me—the warped metal, aged timber, deep doorway, rough grass and the extraordinary accumulation of texture across the facade. The darker treatment also gives the open interior a sense of depth without trying to make the scene artificially dramatic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned places because time becomes visible in them. Removing it pushed the photograph further away from a conventional architectural record and toward line, repetition, contrast and shape. The bright exterior panels become almost white against the deep window openings, making the entire surface feel graphic and dimensional at the same time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVIA 57 West was designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, and its unusual form has always stood apart for me among Manhattan's modern buildings. Medfield, Massachusetts, was quiet, the intersection almost empty, and the strongest presence came from two traffic lights glowing an intense blue-green through the darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRoyal Pizza sits on Main Street, its small illuminated sign becoming one of the few obvious signs of activity in the scene. Farther down the road, streetlights and a handful of headlights disappear into the distance. Overhead wires cut through the darkness, while the surrounding buildings are barely visible except for the occasional window and edge picked up by the available light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere was also a slight haze in the air. Instead of trying to eliminate the flare it created around the lights, I liked what it did to the photograph. The streaks and halos exaggerate the brightness of the traffic signals and give an otherwise ordinary small-town intersection a much stranger presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast is what interested me most. Nothing dramatic is actually happening. It is simply a quiet street in Medfield after dark, yet the colour, darkness and near absence of people change the feeling of the place completely. Its body is worn and faded, with the towing rig still rising behind it, while two smaller damaged vehicles sit close beside it. Farther back, another old truck is tucked beneath a simple roof beside a weathered wooden building. Nothing in the scene feels arranged. The vehicles, sheds, trees and rough ground have simply accumulated into a picture of use, neglect and passing years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was not what interested me here. The photograph is really about texture: aged boards, corrugated roofs, worn metal, grass and the dense canopy of trees surrounding everything. Removing the colour lets those surfaces and shapes carry more of the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the relationship between the vehicles and the buildings. Neither feels separate from the other. Together they suggest a rural working place that has changed gradually, leaving older machines and structures behind rather than clearing them away. Its weathered cylindrical tank and angular metal support frame stand in sharp contrast to the much larger building behind it, where rows of dark windows create their own repetitive pattern. Lower in the frame, rooftops overlap one another with vents, brickwork, skylights and industrial structures filling almost every available space.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour would have competed with what interested me most. This photograph is about form, texture and scale. The pale building facade becomes almost graphic, while the darker water tower separates itself clearly from its surroundings. Lines cross lines. Rectangles sit behind diagonals. Old materials exist beside newer construction without any attempt to make the city visually tidy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is one of the things I enjoy about photographing New York City. There is always another layer. Something utilitarian can become the strongest element in the frame simply because of where it sits and how the surrounding architecture organizes itself around it. I framed the building tightly so its architectural rhythm could fill the picture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe nearest columns have a commanding scale, while those farther away grow smaller and closer together. That compressed perspective creates a strong sequence without making the image feel flat. Between the verticals, decorative stone panels, balustrades and recessed openings give the eye plenty to explore. Light catches the projecting surfaces while the gates and entrances settle into darker tones.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI have always enjoyed Havana’s older architecture for its mixture of craftsmanship, texture and age. When I made this photograph in 2017, I also learned of the building’s association with the Bank of Nova Scotia. That Canadian connection interested me personally, though the repeating columns were the reason I wanted to photograph it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWorking in black and white brings the fluting and carved masonry forward. From across a room, the photograph reads as a clear pattern of light, shadow and vertical lines; closer inspection reveals smaller details within that structure. I see it appealing to people drawn to Cuban architecture, classical facades and monochrome photography. Towers gather near the water, piers reach outward, and the tighter grid of streets and rooftops continues inland. Small boats punctuate the broad river surface. I like being able to see the city’s overall shape while still finding details that suggest its daily movement.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe light makes that structure feel less rigid. Warm colour spreads through the clouds and touches the water near the sun, while the buildings fall into a darker band. Farther away, the city becomes a softer texture. That gradual loss of detail gives the view depth and keeps the foreground waterfront distinct.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFlying along the river offered a perspective I could not have found at street level. For me, the photograph brings together two interests: the patterns made by a city and the changing light around them. As wall art, it offers a broad urban view with a warm colour accent.
