Then, at precisely the right moment, a man on a bicycle entered the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat small figure changed the photograph for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis red shirt immediately separates him from the muted colors of the building, while the bicycle gives movement to an otherwise completely static facade. He is dwarfed by the architecture behind him, yet my eye goes directly to him. Without the cyclist, I would have a photograph about an aging Havana building. With him, it becomes a photograph about life continuing around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI particularly like the contrast between the grandeur the building must once have possessed and the way it is being lived in now. Ornamental columns and decorative details remain, but so do crumbling plaster, boarded windows, exposed masonry and improvised repairs. The peeling paint is immediately visible, but the interior takes longer to read. Fine white clouds spread through the open space between the upper branches.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe tree’s form becomes more interesting as you follow it upward. Its trunk bends and divides into irregular limbs, some carrying only small patches of foliage. Dark bark and knots remain visible even from a distance. I like the way that rough structure stands beside the softness of the autumn colour without either becoming secondary.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe vertical composition gives the cottonwood enough room to show both its height and its sideways reach. It also keeps the view anchored in the desert floor, where the colour is more subdued. Leaves gather in several bright patches, leaving portions of the limbs exposed between them. On the right, a heavier trunk bends as it rises, with sparse foliage allowing its rough surface and branching outline to remain clear. The two trees have enough in common to belong together, yet neither simply repeats the other.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI included the dry ground and smaller growth beneath them so the image keeps its desert setting. Fallen leaves and low shrubs carry quieter brown and gold tones, while the sky opens between the two crowns. Looking upward from this position makes the trunks feel substantial without removing the landscape around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me is how autumn reveals both color and structure. Where leaves remain, they bring warmth; where they have thinned, the tree becomes a more intricate drawing against the sky. This photograph holds both conditions at once. His newspaper, bent posture and shadow make a much quieter pattern, yet they are what I return to when looking at the photograph. I waited for the light, newspaper and posture to settle into a balanced frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI remember the evening’s heat settling and the brief glow across the building. The colour was strong enough to give the entire facade a warm, golden character, but the recesses stayed dark. That contrast preserves depth within the arcade.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat matters to me is the relationship between everyday life and the setting it inhabits. The man is simply reading, surrounded by architecture marked by time. This close colour photograph presents the painted image and its worn surface together.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI photographed the wall in 2011, drawn to the evidence of marks left by people who were no longer present. Some appear as letters or initials, while others read simply as lines across the paint. I wanted to stay close enough for those details to become part of the composition rather than disappear within a broader view of the monastery.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe golden circles provide the strongest repeated shapes. They hold the upper part of the image together even where the painted faces are difficult to read. Below them, darker robes and fine decorative lines introduce a different rhythm, giving the eye several layers to move through.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI find the relationship between those layers compelling. The figures remain recognizable, yet the scratches continually interrupt them, shifting attention from the original forms to the surface itself. As a Romanian architectural detail print, the photograph offers a small fragment of a much larger place. A narrow yellow section at the left contrasts with the larger blue field, and a darker band runs along the bottom. These divisions keep the many inscriptions together visually, even though the writing itself follows no single direction or scale.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2017, keeping the view close rather than including the rest of the bar.
