It was the extraordinary contrast between decay and beauty. The hull is weathered and deteriorating, sections of the old vessel have fallen away, and the bare masts and rigging reach into the sky without sails. Yet on this particular morning, the sunrise transformed everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI positioned myself low and close to the shoreline, allowing the ship to dominate the frame while still leaving room for the glowing sky and open water. The masts create strong geometric lines overhead, while their reflections stretch downward into the lake. Even the surrounding trees seem to frame the wreck, separating its dark, aging structure from the intense light behind it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something fascinating to me about objects that have outlived their original purpose. This ship was built to move through water, yet now it sits permanently grounded and slowly changing with time and weather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2019, but the scene itself felt strangely outside of time. Taxis and cars crowd the street, a city bus works its way through them, and a few pedestrians move through the foreground. Yet the people remain almost anonymous, reduced to dark silhouettes against the reflected light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat makes the photograph work for me is the depth. The repeating streetlights gradually become smaller as they disappear down the avenue, pulling my eye deep into Manhattan. Above them, scattered office windows punctuate the darkness. Below, the wet sidewalk carries that light back toward the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white strips away the competing colors of New York and concentrates everything on light, shadow, movement and reflection. The brightest headlights become almost white against the surrounding darkness, while large portions of the buildings disappear into deep shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always enjoyed photographing cities after rain. Familiar streets become more cinematic, but nothing about the moment needs to be staged. It was the platform.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the station in 2016 while travelling through New Zealand's South Island. Instead of stepping back to make the familiar postcard view, I was drawn beneath the long covered platform, where the architecture creates an extraordinary tunnel of repeating steel arches, glass, stone and shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe perspective does most of the work. Everything pulls toward a distant vanishing point—the railway tracks, platform edge, roof structure, lamps and the beautiful row of arched station windows on the left. Even the shadows stretch diagonally across the pavement, adding another layer of lines to the composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt natural for this photograph. Without color competing for attention, the structure becomes much more obvious. Sunlight strikes the stone facade and sections of the platform while the steel canopy moves repeatedly between brilliant highlights and deep shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI particularly like that the station is almost empty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDunedin Train Station is one of New Zealand's best-known architectural landmarks, but this photograph isn't really about its fame. Rather than trying to freeze the train sharply, I let the movement become part of the image. Its body stretches across the frame as a translucent blur, while the station around it remains rigid and sharply defined.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast is what interested me most.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe architecture above the platform is immense. Curving steel supports repeat into the distance, smaller beams crisscross the ceiling, and rows of lights lead my eye through the station. Against all of that structure, the passing train becomes almost ghostlike. I can see its form, but not its details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is even a lone figure standing across the tracks, small enough to emphasize the scale of both the station and the moving train.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2005, and I still like the way it balances two completely different kinds of energy. The railway station feels permanent, engineered and solid. The train exists for only a fraction of a second before disappearing from the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph isn't simply about railway travel. In black and white, those textures become even more pronounced. The dark stones, pale walls of the house, grasses, flowers, and heavy sky separate into layers rather than competing through color.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe sky changed the character of the photograph completely. Broad, dark clouds stretch across most of the frame, giving the relatively quiet countryside scene a sense of weight and drama. Below them, the house feels almost stark in its simplicity. Smaller homes, stone boundaries, and the narrow road continue into the distance, but they remain secondary to the relationship between the cottage and the wall surrounding it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was how much structure existed in what initially appeared to be a simple rural scene. The wall is not merely a foreground element. One massive concrete opening leads to another, then another, drawing the eye steadily through the abandoned factory until the architecture seems to disappear into darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this industrial ruin in Ontario, where years of neglect had stripped the interior down to its basic structure. Rough concrete columns dominate the foreground. Beyond them, worn floorboards, scattered debris, broken material and a large leaning panel interrupt what was once an orderly working space. There is very little left to soften the building. That emptiness is part of what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because the photograph is really about structure, texture and depth. Without colour competing for attention, the repeated rectangular forms become much stronger. Light catching the edges of the concrete separates each successive opening, while the darker recesses keep pulling the photograph farther back into the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been fascinated by abandoned places because they reveal architecture in a way occupied buildings rarely do. Once the machinery, people and daily activity disappear, the bones of the place become visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, those bones are almost geometric. The heavy vertical columns, horizontal beams and receding doorways create a surprisingly ordered composition inside a space otherwise defined by decay. The sun was already pushing through the mist, but instead of clearing it immediately, the light spread softly across the sky and water. Trees along both banks became dark silhouettes, while a distant bridge appeared almost weightless in the centre of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe water was remarkably calm. Only small ripples disturbed the surface, catching fragments of warm light beneath the brighter sky. From the boat, there was very little sense of movement beyond the quiet lapping of water. The usual detail of the landscape had disappeared into the mist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted the photograph to preserve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRather than emphasizing the bridge or shoreline, I allowed the atmosphere to dominate. The darker trees frame the scene naturally, guiding the eye toward the opening in the distance, while the warm reflection on the water balances the bright morning light above.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFlorida is often photographed for colour, beaches and intense sunlight. This was something much quieter. The sky occupies much of the frame, gradually shifting from warm light near the horizon into cooler tones overhead. It was texture, shadow and shape. The rough masonry, dark bark, fallen leaves and battered door all occupied nearly the same tonal world, which made the roots feel even more dominant. They do not simply frame the entrance; they seem to press against it from every direction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing was arranged. I did not move branches, clear leaves or try to make the doorway more visible. Its partial concealment was the reason I stopped.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat stays with me is the tension between something built to endure and something growing without any concern for the structure around it. A fortress suggests permanence, strength and control. The roots suggest the opposite—slow, persistent change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHavana is full of layers, but this was one of the quieter ones. No crowd, no traffic, no obvious landmark announcing itself. Just an old door, heavy stone and trees steadily changing the wall around them. The bridge begins high above me, cuts diagonally across the photograph and stretches toward the Sydney skyline on the opposite side of the harbour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was 2016, during blue hour, when the city lights were beginning to appear but there was still enough colour left in the sky. Deep blue fills most of the frame, while the last sunset light burns orange, pink and violet along the horizon. Beneath it, Sydney Harbour settles into cooler tones and the illuminated buildings on the left begin to define the city after dark.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was the contrast in scale. The skyline appears relatively small beneath the immense lattice of steel overhead. Individual lights along the bridge create tiny points of warmth within the dark structure, while the open sky on the left gives all that weight somewhere to breathe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSydney Harbour Bridge is one of those landmarks that has been photographed countless times, so I was less interested in simply recording what it looked like. I wanted to find a viewpoint where its engineering, mass and geometry became the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the sunset completed it. I made this photograph after dusk, when the intense Roman daylight had disappeared and the ancient stone was taking on a much darker, quieter character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was able to set up my tripod on the terrace of Colosso Metro Cafe in 2010. From that elevated position, the Colosseum sweeps across the right side of the frame, its repeating arches gradually disappearing into shadow. The open sky above it remains remarkably simple, filled with warm amber light that gives the entire scene an almost monochromatic quality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the contrast between the scale of the structure and the small signs of contemporary Rome surrounding it. People gather near the base, the road crosses the foreground, and buildings rise in the distance, yet the Colosseum still overwhelms everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI deliberately allowed the mood to become darker than the familiar sunlit views of Rome. Deep shadows fill the arches, the weathered stone catches the remaining light, and the broad empty sky creates a sense of space around a monument normally surrounded by visual activity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat was the photograph I wanted—not simply a record of the Roman Colosseum, but a quieter view of it after the day had begun to disappear. There is no dramatic landmark and almost no colour demanding attention. Instead, the photograph depends on atmosphere—the dense fog, the muted dawn light, the isolated trees and the broad areas of open water and sky. Even the distant shoreline seems uncertain, appearing and disappearing as the mist thickens across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition became a study in restraint. Most of the landscape has been stripped away, leaving the house and trees suspended between water and fog. Their reflections are imperfect and elongated, just strong enough to connect the shoreline to the darker foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMornings like this are one reason I like being out with a camera before the landscape fully wakes. Fog changes familiar places quickly. Details vanish, distances become difficult to judge, and ordinary subjects can take on an entirely different presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me here was that sense of quiet uncertainty. The photograph does not reveal very much, yet it gives the eye room to wander through the mist. He stands almost in silhouette, surrounded by objects, handwritten details and accumulated pieces of the bar’s personality. Above him, the currency creates a dense, irregular canopy that seems to press down into the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for this photograph. It reduces all that visual clutter into light, shadow, texture and shape. The refrigerator glows on one side, a table lamp burns brightly on the other, and the darker centre of the room holds the bartender between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most about places like this is how much character can collect in a relatively small space. Nothing feels designed for a photograph. The bottles, old automotive pieces, hanging money and worn counter have simply accumulated into something distinctive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to keep. Broad stone steps enter from the left, while the paved lane continues between tall buildings toward a dark doorway at the far end. Balconies rise above it, an old wall lamp projects into the narrow space, and a metal shutter marked with graffiti introduces something unmistakably contemporary into an otherwise aged setting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right because the photograph is really about surfaces and structure. Rough stone, smoother masonry, dark window openings and irregular paving all separate through tone rather than colour. The absence of people makes the street feel unusually still.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBarcelona's Gothic Quarter can be crowded and energetic, but scenes like this have always interested me more. The corrugated metal roof had buckled and lifted away from its supports, while the long wooden porch sagged beneath a collection of objects that had simply been left behind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat disorder is what caught my attention. Nothing about the building felt preserved or arranged. Weathered boards overlap one another, doors hang unevenly, windows sit behind rough shutters, and an old chair remains near the centre of the porch. The house seems caught somewhere between still being recognizable as a home and gradually becoming part of the landscape around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was secondary to what interested me—the warped metal, aged timber, deep doorway, rough grass and the extraordinary accumulation of texture across the facade. The darker treatment also gives the open interior a sense of depth without trying to make the scene artificially dramatic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned places because time becomes visible in them.
