It was the extraordinary contrast between decay and beauty. The hull is weathered and deteriorating, sections of the old vessel have fallen away, and the bare masts and rigging reach into the sky without sails. Yet on this particular morning, the sunrise transformed everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI positioned myself low and close to the shoreline, allowing the ship to dominate the frame while still leaving room for the glowing sky and open water. The masts create strong geometric lines overhead, while their reflections stretch downward into the lake. Even the surrounding trees seem to frame the wreck, separating its dark, aging structure from the intense light behind it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something fascinating to me about objects that have outlived their original purpose. This ship was built to move through water, yet now it sits permanently grounded and slowly changing with time and weather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2019, but the scene itself felt strangely outside of time. Broad, dark clouds stretch across most of the frame, giving the relatively quiet countryside scene a sense of weight and drama. Below them, the house feels almost stark in its simplicity. Smaller homes, stone boundaries, and the narrow road continue into the distance, but they remain secondary to the relationship between the cottage and the wall surrounding it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was how much structure existed in what initially appeared to be a simple rural scene. The wall is not merely a foreground element. Long ribbons of white, gold and red stretch across the River Liffey, turning the dark water into something far more luminous than the city above it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph looking along the river through central Dublin, with the city still caught between night and morning. A deep blue sky hangs over the buildings while streetlights trace both banks of the Liffey. The river becomes the centre of everything, gathering those lights and pulling them downward into elongated reflections.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the symmetry without everything being perfectly symmetrical. Buildings line both sides of the water, bridges draw the eye toward the centre, and the river creates a strong visual path through the city. Yet every reflection behaves differently. Some are narrow and precise; others dissolve into broad strokes of light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe quietness of the scene matters to me as much as the colour. Dublin is a busy city, but at this hour it feels unusually still. The architecture remains present without overwhelming the river, while the saturated blue overhead gives the warmer lights along the streets an almost theatrical contrast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always liked photographing cities when their familiar character changes for a few minutes. Here, the River Liffey is not simply running through Dublin. Light, water, mist, and a few distant shapes. That simplicity was what caught me here on Florida's Intracoastal Waterway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was on the water early in the summer of 2009 when the entire scene seemed suspended in haze. The sun was already pushing through the mist, but instead of clearing it immediately, the light spread softly across the sky and water. Trees along both banks became dark silhouettes, while a distant bridge appeared almost weightless in the centre of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe water was remarkably calm. Only small ripples disturbed the surface, catching fragments of warm light beneath the brighter sky. From the boat, there was very little sense of movement beyond the quiet lapping of water. The usual detail of the landscape had disappeared into the mist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted the photograph to preserve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRather than emphasizing the bridge or shoreline, I allowed the atmosphere to dominate. The darker trees frame the scene naturally, guiding the eye toward the opening in the distance, while the warm reflection on the water balances the bright morning light above.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFlorida is often photographed for colour, beaches and intense sunlight. This was something much quieter. It rises, falls and bends with every ridge, disappearing into the distance only to reappear farther along the horizon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in China in 2015. Several watchtowers punctuate the wall as it travels across the rugged terrain, creating a visual rhythm that carries the eye from the foreground deep into the photograph. Beyond them, successive mountain ridges become softer and increasingly blue with distance until they almost dissolve into the hazy sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe subdued light was important. There was no dramatic sunset or brilliant colour competing with the landscape. Instead, the muted conditions allowed the shape of the mountains and the extraordinary path of the wall to become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStanding there, I was conscious of the enormous scale of what I was looking at. From a distance the Great Wall can appear almost delicate, a narrow line following the contours of the land, yet the closer sections reveal its physical weight and construction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast fascinated me. Human architecture occupies the landscape, but the mountains remain dominant. Dark rock formations extended into the calm ocean, creating a natural path toward the small coastal community gathered along the distant shoreline. Those houses give the photograph scale, but they also add something more personal—a reminder that people live right beside this constantly changing edge of land and sea.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI liked the enormous amount of open space. The sky occupies much of the frame, gradually shifting from warm light near the horizon into cooler tones overhead. Below it, the ocean becomes almost metallic, while the wet beach takes on the same muted evening colour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMaine is often photographed for its ruggedness, but this scene felt different to me. It was restrained. Almost still.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to preserve. Not simply a sunset over the Atlantic, but that brief period when daylight has nearly disappeared and everything seems to soften—the rocks, the water, the beach and even the houses in the distance. From here, the city spreads outward in layers—flat rooftops, faded facades, church domes, water tanks, weathered masonry and buildings from different periods all compressed into one dense urban landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe large rust-coloured dome on the left immediately anchors the view. From there, my eye moves through cream, yellow and white buildings toward the smaller orange dome near the centre, then across a maze of red roof edges, patched surfaces and occasional flashes of turquoise and green. Nothing feels perfectly ordered. That is part of what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHavana often photographs beautifully because age is visible everywhere. Surfaces have faded, buildings have been altered, and the rooftops show years of use and adaptation. Yet ornate architecture still rises through all of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the photograph to hold that contradiction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pale sky gives the city just enough breathing room, while the foreground remains crowded with texture and detail. From a distance, the photograph reads as a broad Havana cityscape. The bridge begins high above me, cuts diagonally across the photograph and stretches toward the Sydney skyline on the opposite side of the harbour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was 2016, during blue hour, when the city lights were beginning to appear but there was still enough colour left in the sky. Deep blue fills most of the frame, while the last sunset light burns orange, pink and violet along the horizon. Beneath it, Sydney Harbour settles into cooler tones and the illuminated buildings on the left begin to define the city after dark.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was the contrast in scale. The skyline appears relatively small beneath the immense lattice of steel overhead. Individual lights along the bridge create tiny points of warmth within the dark structure, while the open sky on the left gives all that weight somewhere to breathe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSydney Harbour Bridge is one of those landmarks that has been photographed countless times, so I was less interested in simply recording what it looked like. I wanted to find a viewpoint where its engineering, mass and geometry became the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the sunset completed it. The water was nearly motionless, carrying soft reflections downward and doubling the few shapes that remained visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to how little the scene needed. There is no dramatic landmark and almost no colour demanding attention. Instead, the photograph depends on atmosphere—the dense fog, the muted dawn light, the isolated trees and the broad areas of open water and sky. Even the distant shoreline seems uncertain, appearing and disappearing as the mist thickens across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition became a study in restraint. Most of the landscape has been stripped away, leaving the house and trees suspended between water and fog. Their reflections are imperfect and elongated, just strong enough to connect the shoreline to the darker foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMornings like this are one reason I like being out with a camera before the landscape fully wakes. Fog changes familiar places quickly. Details vanish, distances become difficult to judge, and ordinary subjects can take on an entirely different presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me here was that sense of quiet uncertainty. The photograph does not reveal very much, yet it gives the eye room to wander through the mist. I had not planned the photograph or scouted the location. The scene simply came together in front of me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat fascinated me was the contrast. The bridge glows in warm amber light, its traditional Chinese rooflines and sweeping arches standing against modern high-rise buildings and the deep blue evening sky. Below, the calm water turns the arches into complete circles, creating a strong geometric rhythm across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition straightforward because there was very little I wanted to interfere with. The bridge already carried the photograph. Its reflection added symmetry, while the surrounding towers introduced a second layer—the contemporary city rising behind architecture that speaks to a much older visual tradition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2015, and what stays with me is how briefly everything aligned. Water this calm does not remain that way for long. A breeze, passing boat or changing light could have broken the reflection completely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a few minutes, though, Chengdu seemed to pause. From this elevated viewpoint, the entire sequence becomes visible at once—a series of tight curves cutting a dark ribbon through the surrounding fields and trees.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white changed the scene considerably. Without colour competing for attention, the road markings, vegetation and repeated bends become much more graphic. The asphalt stands apart from the textured landscape, while two small cars give the photograph scale and make the road feel even more dramatic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was the geometry. One curve leads naturally into another, then disappears behind vegetation before returning farther up the hillside. The eye keeps following it. There is no single obvious endpoint; the road simply continues through the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIreland is often photographed for its expansive green landscapes, but I wanted something different here. The aerial perspective turned an ordinary country road into an almost abstract composition of curves, lines and changing textures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, Corkscrew Hill is exactly the kind of subject that benefits from being seen from an unfamiliar angle. It creates space across the foreground and allows the skyline to sit comfortably beneath an enormous Western Australian sky. The clear blue light gives the photograph a completely different character from the dense urban scenes I often photograph at street level.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also liked the mixture of architecture. Tall commercial towers dominate the centre, while lower waterfront buildings, public spaces and the sculptural forms around Elizabeth Quay soften the transition between the city and the river. On the right, the warmer brick architecture provides a visual counterpoint to all the glass and steel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePerth struck me as a city where the relationship between downtown and the water is difficult to separate. Standing here, both were part of the same scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to photograph—not simply a collection of skyscrapers, but the wider shape of Perth itself. Soft pink and orange reached the mountain peaks while cooler blues remained across the lake and lower landscape. Above everything, heavy clouds caught traces of the same pastel colour. For a few minutes, warm and cool tones existed together without either one overwhelming the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe still water was equally important. Reflections beneath the tufa formations extend their shapes downward and create a visual balance between the rugged rock and the smooth surface of Mono Lake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been attracted to landscapes that feel slightly unfamiliar, and the tufa towers give Mono Lake that quality immediately. They look sculptural, almost improbable, particularly when separated by quiet water and viewed against the mountains beyond.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph is about that combination: unusual geology, open water, distant mountains and the fleeting colour of sunrise. The landscape already had everything it needed. Without colour, the scene becomes quieter and more elemental. The rough paving and sloping foreground establish where I am standing, then the eye moves through a lower band of rooftops into increasingly dense rows of homes. Farther back, larger buildings and another line of houses continue the pattern toward the ridge.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white removes the distractions I did not need. Without colour, the repeating rooflines, pale walls, darker trees and small streets become more obvious. The scene starts to feel almost graphic, yet there is still enough detail to keep revealing individual homes, parked cars, murals and bits of everyday life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most is that this is not a polished postcard view of Northern Ireland. It is an ordinary urban neighbourhood seen from an unusual vantage point.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that is where the photograph becomes interesting. From a distance, Rosemount reads as one broad cityscape. Reflections from the city lights break across the surface in narrow streaks of gold, white and blue, connecting the buildings to the lake without overwhelming the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also like how little detail there is in the sky. That large expanse of darkness makes the illuminated architecture feel even more concentrated. Closer to the river, ornate architecture stretches across the frame in a mixture of white, gold and cooler blue light. Those colours continue downward into the Vltava River, where the reflections become softer and less precise, broken into long vertical bands by the movement of the water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like the layering in this view. The river creates the foreground, the buildings form a bright horizontal band through the centre, and the castle sits higher on the hill behind them. Nothing needs to dominate completely. My eye moves from the reflections to the architecture and then gradually upward toward the castle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePrague is extraordinarily rich visually, particularly after daylight disappears and individual buildings begin to separate through artificial light. In this photograph, the city feels almost theatrical without losing the sense of a real place. Its body is worn and faded, with the towing rig still rising behind it, while two smaller damaged vehicles sit close beside it. Farther back, another old truck is tucked beneath a simple roof beside a weathered wooden building. Nothing in the scene feels arranged. The vehicles, sheds, trees and rough ground have simply accumulated into a picture of use, neglect and passing years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was not what interested me here. The photograph is really about texture: aged boards, corrugated roofs, worn metal, grass and the dense canopy of trees surrounding everything. Removing the colour lets those surfaces and shapes carry more of the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the relationship between the vehicles and the buildings. Neither feels separate from the other. Together they suggest a rural working place that has changed gradually, leaving older machines and structures behind rather than clearing them away. Pulling back gave the temple room among the surrounding buildings instead of isolating it as a single monument. Its rounded dome and upright columns stand clearly above the treeline, but the smaller structures along the shore contribute their own rhythm of roofs, windows and shaded walls.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the foreground, a series of markers breaks up the rippled surface of the lagoon. Their spacing leads the eye across the water toward the shore, creating a quieter counterpoint to the detail in the architecture. The grey sky gives the dome a simple backdrop and leaves the waterfront as the busiest part of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings those relationships forward. I’m interested in the contrast between the temple’s ordered form and the softer textures of foliage and water, and in how much breathing room this view allows. Warm colour spreads through the clouds and touches the water near the sun, while the buildings fall into a darker band. Farther away, the city becomes a softer texture. That gradual loss of detail gives the view depth and keeps the foreground waterfront distinct.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFlying along the river offered a perspective I could not have found at street level. For me, the photograph brings together two interests: the patterns made by a city and the changing light around them. As wall art, it offers a broad urban view with a warm colour accent. The rounded roof, open window spaces and remaining panels hold together as a single subject, while fallen bodywork sits lower in the foreground. There is very little shine left. Instead, the surface carries orange, brown and darker patches that give each section a different texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the contrast between the truck’s weight and the openness above it. The ground is pale and rough, the surrounding vegetation dry, and the sky offers a cooler colour that keeps the rust from dominating everything. The composition lets the vehicle remain firmly part of the landscape rather than isolating it as a museum object.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI do not know the truck’s working history, and the photograph leaves that story open.
