Striped awnings, traffic signals and the West 31st Street sign establish the setting, while raised placards break up the view of the buildings. A marcher strides ahead near the centre, and a broad patterned banner stretches across the right. I like how individual people remain distinct within such a tightly gathered scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white gathers the many visual elements into a strong pattern of dark fabric, pale signs and sunlit faces. The repeated letters compete with the shapes of arms, flags and heads, making the photograph rewarding to explore a little at a time. There is always another small gesture or piece of lettering to notice.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the picture holds the experience of standing close to a moving public gathering in New York. It brings Pride, protest and the surrounding streetscape into one moment. I came across it late at night and made a handheld black and white photograph in the soft streetlight. With its moustache, round hat and oversized beer stein, the figure had enough character to make me stop outside the pub and look closely.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe worn surface is what kept my attention. Pale patches interrupt the darker paint across the face and clothing, while fine marks gather around the collar and sleeves. The fixed expression remains clear beneath that texture: wide eyes, an open mouth and the large moustache above it. I kept the view close so the wear would be part of the portrait rather than a detail lost in a wider street scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe stein has its own relief pattern, including a stag near the lower part. It fills much of the right side of the frame, balanced by the figure’s extended hand on the left. Behind, the brick wall provides a regular pattern that makes the uneven paint seem more pronounced. The photograph lets those different surfaces share the same light.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI enjoy encountering things like this when walking through a city. The figure was a familiar kind of pub decoration, but its condition made it particular.
