It was the extraordinary contrast between decay and beauty. The hull is weathered and deteriorating, sections of the old vessel have fallen away, and the bare masts and rigging reach into the sky without sails. Yet on this particular morning, the sunrise transformed everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI positioned myself low and close to the shoreline, allowing the ship to dominate the frame while still leaving room for the glowing sky and open water. The masts create strong geometric lines overhead, while their reflections stretch downward into the lake. Even the surrounding trees seem to frame the wreck, separating its dark, aging structure from the intense light behind it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something fascinating to me about objects that have outlived their original purpose. This ship was built to move through water, yet now it sits permanently grounded and slowly changing with time and weather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2019, but the scene itself felt strangely outside of time. Instead of everyone rushing through one of the busiest places in Manhattan, people simply sat down.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is crowded, but it doesn't feel frantic. People lounge in folding chairs, talk, watch the street or simply sit by themselves. Behind them is unmistakable Times Square—yellow taxis, pedestrians, construction equipment, traffic lights, towering buildings and an almost absurd concentration of signs and advertising. Even the New York Police Department station is buried within the visual chaos.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like photographs where there isn't necessarily one person who is the subject. Here, the people collectively become the subject. My eye can wander around the frame and discover dozens of small moments happening simultaneously.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph also has a personal connection for me. Later, during a workshop with legendary New York photographer Jay Maisel, I showed him this image. He stopped on it and commented on the uniqueness of the moment. That stayed with me because uniqueness is exactly what had made me raise my camera in the first place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTimes Square has been photographed millions of times. Finding a different photograph there is considerably harder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a brief period that summer, one of the world's most recognizable symbols of urban movement became somewhere people could simply pull up a chair and do absolutely nothing. I found this one while walking the city—a battered old window surrounded by cracked plaster, exposed masonry, peeling paint and years of improvised repairs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was the color that first pulled me in. The faded yellow wall is interrupted by remnants of turquoise paint and the deep red of the original window frame. Then the details begin to take over. Broken panes have been covered with mismatched pieces of wood. Sections of the wall have fallen away completely, exposing bricks and rough construction underneath. Nothing quite lines up anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the wall straight on because I didn't want perspective to distract from those textures. The entire frame becomes a collection of surfaces: old glass, splintered boards, crumbling plaster, brick, faded paint and weathered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something about Havana's aging architecture that I find endlessly photographic. I don't see decay simply as deterioration. I see layers. Repairs are made, paint is added and disappears, windows are patched rather than replaced, and the building continues to change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005. They weren't posing for me. One leaned forward with a drink held between his hands while the other sat back against the bench, legs crossed. Both looked directly toward my camera with expressions that were difficult to read—and that ambiguity was exactly what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a lot happening around them. Reflections fill the cafe windows, advertisements hang behind the glass, tables and signs push into the edges of the frame, and another face appears unexpectedly in the reflection at the far right. Dublin is present everywhere, but the two men remain firmly at the center of the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because this image is really about people, expressions and the visual layers surrounding them. Without color, the dark jackets, brickwork, window reflections and cafe interior begin to work together rather than compete for attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStreet photography often depends on noticing something before the moment changes. There was nothing spectacular happening here. No event. No performance. Just two men sitting outside a cafe in Dublin in 2019.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYet their body language and direct looks give the photograph a tension I couldn't have arranged myself. I still don't know exactly what they were thinking when they noticed me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's part of why I like the photograph. From this perspective, the buildings begin to lose their individual identities. They become an arrangement of vertical lines, repeating windows, curved forms and hard geometric edges.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat abstraction is what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe central building immediately separates itself from the surrounding towers. Its stepped architecture and curved facade contrast with the severe vertical grids behind it, while the arched structure across the rooftop introduces another unexpected pattern. Everything feels incredibly dense. One building seems to push against the next, with almost no breathing room between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because color wasn't important to what I was seeing. This photograph is about architecture and structure—the way sunlight strikes one facade while the neighboring building falls into deep shadow, the repetition of hundreds of windows, and the enormous scale created by stacking all those architectural elements together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNew York gives me endless opportunities to photograph famous buildings, but I'm often more interested in fragments of the city. A different viewpoint can turn familiar architecture into something much less obvious.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, Manhattan becomes almost a study in design.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere are no streets, people or recognizable pieces of the skyline to establish scale. It was the platform.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the station in 2016 while travelling through New Zealand's South Island. Instead of stepping back to make the familiar postcard view, I was drawn beneath the long covered platform, where the architecture creates an extraordinary tunnel of repeating steel arches, glass, stone and shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe perspective does most of the work. Everything pulls toward a distant vanishing point—the railway tracks, platform edge, roof structure, lamps and the beautiful row of arched station windows on the left. Even the shadows stretch diagonally across the pavement, adding another layer of lines to the composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt natural for this photograph. Without color competing for attention, the structure becomes much more obvious. Sunlight strikes the stone facade and sections of the platform while the steel canopy moves repeatedly between brilliant highlights and deep shadow.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI particularly like that the station is almost empty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDunedin Train Station is one of New Zealand's best-known architectural landmarks, but this photograph isn't really about its fame. Bodie is a genuine American ghost town, and what fascinated me was how much of the place still felt intact. I wasn't looking at a recreation or a movie set. These buildings had simply survived, weathering decade after decade in the dry California landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe contrast between the two structures immediately caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn the left, the brick building still feels remarkably formal, with its repeating arched windows and carefully laid masonry. Beside it, the wooden building has aged very differently. Its boards are bleached and scarred, the storefront windows have darkened, and a large faded sign remains barely visible across the upper facade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI composed the photograph straight on because I wanted the buildings to stand almost like a portrait. Side by side. Nothing modern interrupts them. Even the empty land stretching away on either side reinforces the isolation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white seemed inevitable here. It concentrates my attention on the cracked wood, old brick, dusty glass and the extraordinary differences in texture between the two buildings. It also removes another layer of time. Without color, I find it much harder to immediately place the photograph in the present.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what I remember most about Bodie.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe town doesn't feel rebuilt for visitors. It feels interrupted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese buildings are still standing where people once worked, gathered and watched the town outside their windows. The people disappeared long ago. I am drawn to surfaces that have accumulated years of weather, repairs, marks and human contact—the kind of wall that becomes more interesting the longer I stand in front of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this one in southern India.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA small wooden door sits almost unexpectedly within an enormous weathered wall. At first the scene seems overwhelmingly blue, but the closer I looked, the more colors began to emerge. Violet and faded red remain in the door. Pale markings and scratched graffiti wander across the wall. Stains run vertically through the surface, while patches of old paint reveal layer after layer underneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is that tiny plant growing directly beneath the doorway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love details like that. Against this massive, scarred surface, a few green leaves introduce something alive and temporary. The door itself feels almost absorbed into the wall, as though both have been aging together for decades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene straight on because I wanted very little interpretation between me and what I had found. The wall becomes the composition. Texture, color, scratches, stains and imperfections become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing India so much. Extraordinary photographs don't always announce themselves. I wanted the sculpture and the city behind it to work together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom this position, the polished surface bends Chicago into an entirely different landscape. Buildings stretch and curve across the steel, the horizon folds inward, and the people scattered through Millennium Park become tiny figures inside the reflection. Behind it, the rigid geometry of the surrounding architecture creates almost the opposite effect—straight lines, repeated windows and hard rectangular forms surrounding this enormous fluid shape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in 2011 and chose black and white because it strips away much of the visual noise. What remains is shape, scale, architecture and reflection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI especially like the small human figures beneath the sculpture. Without them, it would be difficult to appreciate just how substantial Cloud Gate really is. That contrast is what stopped me. In Dresden, I watched the train move past the platform and wanted the photograph to hold onto the feeling of motion rather than freeze it into perfect detail.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe train dominates the composition as a series of horizontal red, white, and metallic bands. Its windows dissolve into a soft blur, yet the roof structure above remains sharp enough to give the image a rigid framework. I like that collision of movement and geometry. The ceiling grid, vertical supports, and platform edge create an ordered architectural setting, while the train seems to tear straight through it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is also something almost abstract about the photograph. The deep red body of the train carries most of the visual weight, broken by a clean white stripe and the softer glow of the windows below. Farther back, the skyline rises above the city, giving the photograph a natural destination without overwhelming everything happening below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt particularly suited to this view. Without color separating the buildings, the shapes, rooflines, windows, masonry, and repeating patterns become much more apparent. The city turns into an intricate arrangement of light and dark, with hundreds of small details packed into a single scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the density. There is very little empty space here. One building overlaps the next, then another, creating a visual record of a city that feels as though it has been assembled gradually rather than planned as one uniform whole. Even the cloudy sky seems to press downward, concentrating attention on the architecture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom a distance Prague can be defined by its great landmarks. I photographed the medieval stone complex in black and white beneath a broad overcast sky, letting its broken walls, central tower, arches, and rough masonry carry the image.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy wife and I came across the abbey while travelling through Ireland in 2019, only about a 15-minute walk from the much better-known Rock of Cashel. That contrast stayed with me. The Rock draws the attention, yet just beyond it sits this extraordinary ruin in the open countryside, quieter and far less imposing in the way it announces itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is built around that sense of isolation. A wide field separates me from the structure, while the empty sky gives the abbey room to stand almost as a piece of sculpture. The surviving walls still reveal the shape of the original Gothic church, but sections have collapsed into irregular stone forms. In black and white, those textures become more pronounced: weathered blocks, dark openings, broken rooflines, and the soft grass surrounding them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHore Abbey began as a Benedictine monastery before passing to the Cistercians in the 13th century, becoming the last pre-Reformation Cistercian foundation in Ireland. Across this Maine rock face, layers of white, turquoise, purple, and faded markings sit against stone streaked with rust orange, brown, grey, and ochre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to the way the graffiti does not simply sit on top of the rock. The fractures, ledges, stains, and mineral colour seem to break the painted marks apart, so the human gestures become part of the surface rather than a separate layer. Some words are still legible; others have faded into fragments. From a distance, the whole wall begins to work almost like an abstract composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat tension is what made the photograph interesting to me. Rock suggests permanence. Graffiti is usually fleeting. Here, the two occupy the same space, one weathering slowly while the other is already disappearing into it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Maine in 2018, but what matters most to me is the texture and contradiction within the frame. The warm natural colour of the stone dominates, while the scattered graffiti interrupts it just enough to keep the eye moving. That contrast interested me: an elaborate Art Deco door beside something as familiar and practical as a bicycle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour would have competed with the extraordinary amount of detail. In monochrome, the eye moves more easily between the rough metal, the arrows, the round porthole-like windows, the stickers, the brickwork and the bicycle wheels. Repetition begins to take over. Circles answer circles, straight lines run against diagonals, and the bicycle seems almost designed to belong there.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is that the photograph does not depend on a grand building or a famous landmark. It is simply a street detail that became visually complicated the longer I looked at it. Buildings line both sides of the water, bridges draw the eye toward the centre, and the river creates a strong visual path through the city. Yet every reflection behaves differently. Some are narrow and precise; others dissolve into broad strokes of light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe quietness of the scene matters to me as much as the colour. Dublin is a busy city, but at this hour it feels unusually still. The architecture remains present without overwhelming the river, while the saturated blue overhead gives the warmer lights along the streets an almost theatrical contrast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always liked photographing cities when their familiar character changes for a few minutes. Here, the River Liffey is not simply running through Dublin. The broad red frame, repeated rectangular windows and tightly divided panes create an almost rigid geometry, yet every section of wood carries evidence of weathering and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what holds the photograph together for me. The structure is orderly. The surface is not.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAcross the doors, red paint has worn into rusty orange, brown and pale exposed wood. Some window panels remain dark while others appear almost white, breaking the repetition just enough to keep the pattern from becoming too perfect. At the centre, the small lock and metal hardware become an understated focal point amid all those larger rectangles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always found doors photographically intriguing because they are both architectural objects and boundaries. They suggest another space without revealing very much about it. That simplicity was what caught me here on Florida's Intracoastal Waterway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was on the water early in the summer of 2009 when the entire scene seemed suspended in haze. The sun was already pushing through the mist, but instead of clearing it immediately, the light spread softly across the sky and water. Trees along both banks became dark silhouettes, while a distant bridge appeared almost weightless in the centre of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe water was remarkably calm. Only small ripples disturbed the surface, catching fragments of warm light beneath the brighter sky. From the boat, there was very little sense of movement beyond the quiet lapping of water. The usual detail of the landscape had disappeared into the mist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted the photograph to preserve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRather than emphasizing the bridge or shoreline, I allowed the atmosphere to dominate. The darker trees frame the scene naturally, guiding the eye toward the opening in the distance, while the warm reflection on the water balances the bright morning light above.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFlorida is often photographed for colour, beaches and intense sunlight. This was something much quieter. Not the whole train, not the landscape around it, but this tight section of green and yellow metal with its repeating vents, hinges, handles and years of wear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this train in Coonoor, India, in 2009 while travelling through the Nilgiri Hills. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is one of the defining sights of the region, but I was more interested here in moving closer and isolating a small piece of the carriage. Once separated from the rest of the train, the surface becomes almost abstract.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe saturated green dominates the frame, interrupted by a single horizontal band of yellow running through the centre. Rows of louvred panels repeat across the metalwork, creating a strong pattern, while chipped paint, scratches and uneven surfaces prevent the geometry from becoming too perfect. Those small imperfections are important to me. They give the photograph its character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often find that the most memorable part of a place is not necessarily the grand view. Sometimes it is a colour, a texture or an ordinary detail that becomes far more interesting when removed from its surroundings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what happened here. Against a brick wall crowded with graffiti, stickers, signs, wires and painted shapes, a woman's face appears to float above a body that has quite literally lost its head.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this scene in 2005 while walking from Manhattan into Brooklyn, shortly after crossing the Brooklyn Bridge. New York street art was everywhere, but this particular combination stopped me. Someone had created the figure on the right, another face occupied the wall above it, and layers of unrelated graffiti had accumulated around both. Nothing was designed as a complete composition, yet together it worked.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat accidental quality is what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in black and white, allowing the brickwork, painted lines, dark doorways and graphic street art to compete on equal terms. The photograph is visually busy, but the missing head gives the eye somewhere to settle. Even the No Parking sign and pole slicing vertically through the frame become part of the disorder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOver the years I began calling the photograph Lost Head. It became one of those images people remembered and, later, tried to locate for themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNew York constantly changes. Walls are repainted, buildings disappear and street art can vanish overnight. It is a curious little interruption in an already complicated facade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the mansion in France, keeping the viewpoint straight and deliberate so the structure could dominate the frame. The dark hedges create a heavy base, while the bright, restless sky gives the upper half of the photograph movement. Those clouds matter. Without them, the house would simply be unusual architecture; with them, the scene becomes more mysterious.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast is what stayed with me. Nothing dramatic is actually happening, yet the building has presence. It feels eccentric, elegant and slightly unsettling all at once. Behind it, a taxi, pedestrians, towers and storefronts remain present, but the motion blur turns them into fragments of the city rather than competing subjects.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me here is the contrast between detail and movement. The streetcar doors, windows, mirrors and front lights remain strong enough to hold the eye, while the streetscape rushes outward toward the edges of the frame. Even the architecture begins to lose its solidity. Toronto becomes less about individual buildings and more about speed, congestion and constant movement.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe red of the streetcar carries through the softer colours around it, making the vehicle feel almost suspended inside the blur.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always liked photographs that show familiar places differently. A Toronto streetcar is an everyday sight, something thousands of people pass without thinking about it. Two maple leaf emblems sit high on the gables, subtle but unmistakably Canadian. Signs advertising fishing rod rentals and departure times add another layer, revealing that these simple structures remain practical places rather than merely picturesque buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also liked the irregularity of the row. The sheds overlap and step backward from one another, each slightly different in size and proportion. Utility poles and overhead wires interrupt the clean geometry, while the wet pavement and subdued sky give the scene the quiet atmosphere of a damp Maritime day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is nothing grand about these buildings, and that is precisely why I stopped. They are functional, weathered and ordinary, shaped by years of exposure and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, Prince Edward Island is not only beaches and red cliffs. Scenes like this reveal another side of the island—working buildings, fishing traditions and architecture created because it was needed. It was texture, shadow and shape. The rough masonry, dark bark, fallen leaves and battered door all occupied nearly the same tonal world, which made the roots feel even more dominant. They do not simply frame the entrance; they seem to press against it from every direction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNothing was arranged. I did not move branches, clear leaves or try to make the doorway more visible. Its partial concealment was the reason I stopped.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat stays with me is the tension between something built to endure and something growing without any concern for the structure around it. A fortress suggests permanence, strength and control. The roots suggest the opposite—slow, persistent change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHavana is full of layers, but this was one of the quieter ones. No crowd, no traffic, no obvious landmark announcing itself. Just an old door, heavy stone and trees steadily changing the wall around them. From there, my eye moves through cream, yellow and white buildings toward the smaller orange dome near the centre, then across a maze of red roof edges, patched surfaces and occasional flashes of turquoise and green. Nothing feels perfectly ordered. That is part of what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHavana often photographs beautifully because age is visible everywhere. Surfaces have faded, buildings have been altered, and the rooftops show years of use and adaptation. Yet ornate architecture still rises through all of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the photograph to hold that contradiction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pale sky gives the city just enough breathing room, while the foreground remains crowded with texture and detail. From a distance, the photograph reads as a broad Havana cityscape. The bridge begins high above me, cuts diagonally across the photograph and stretches toward the Sydney skyline on the opposite side of the harbour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was 2016, during blue hour, when the city lights were beginning to appear but there was still enough colour left in the sky. Deep blue fills most of the frame, while the last sunset light burns orange, pink and violet along the horizon. Beneath it, Sydney Harbour settles into cooler tones and the illuminated buildings on the left begin to define the city after dark.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was the contrast in scale. The skyline appears relatively small beneath the immense lattice of steel overhead. Individual lights along the bridge create tiny points of warmth within the dark structure, while the open sky on the left gives all that weight somewhere to breathe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSydney Harbour Bridge is one of those landmarks that has been photographed countless times, so I was less interested in simply recording what it looked like. I wanted to find a viewpoint where its engineering, mass and geometry became the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the sunset completed it. I made this photograph after dusk, when the intense Roman daylight had disappeared and the ancient stone was taking on a much darker, quieter character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was able to set up my tripod on the terrace of Colosso Metro Cafe in 2010. From that elevated position, the Colosseum sweeps across the right side of the frame, its repeating arches gradually disappearing into shadow. The open sky above it remains remarkably simple, filled with warm amber light that gives the entire scene an almost monochromatic quality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the contrast between the scale of the structure and the small signs of contemporary Rome surrounding it. People gather near the base, the road crosses the foreground, and buildings rise in the distance, yet the Colosseum still overwhelms everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI deliberately allowed the mood to become darker than the familiar sunlit views of Rome. Deep shadows fill the arches, the weathered stone catches the remaining light, and the broad empty sky creates a sense of space around a monument normally surrounded by visual activity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat was the photograph I wanted—not simply a record of the Roman Colosseum, but a quieter view of it after the day had begun to disappear. The water was nearly motionless, carrying soft reflections downward and doubling the few shapes that remained visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to how little the scene needed. There is no dramatic landmark and almost no colour demanding attention. Instead, the photograph depends on atmosphere—the dense fog, the muted dawn light, the isolated trees and the broad areas of open water and sky. Even the distant shoreline seems uncertain, appearing and disappearing as the mist thickens across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition became a study in restraint. Most of the landscape has been stripped away, leaving the house and trees suspended between water and fog. Their reflections are imperfect and elongated, just strong enough to connect the shoreline to the darker foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMornings like this are one reason I like being out with a camera before the landscape fully wakes. Fog changes familiar places quickly. Details vanish, distances become difficult to judge, and ordinary subjects can take on an entirely different presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me here was that sense of quiet uncertainty. The photograph does not reveal very much, yet it gives the eye room to wander through the mist. That was what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was walking along the river in Chengdu just after dusk when the lights of Anshun Bridge came on and suddenly the entire structure appeared twice—once above the water and again in an unusually clear reflection below it. I had not planned the photograph or scouted the location. The scene simply came together in front of me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat fascinated me was the contrast. The bridge glows in warm amber light, its traditional Chinese rooflines and sweeping arches standing against modern high-rise buildings and the deep blue evening sky. Below, the calm water turns the arches into complete circles, creating a strong geometric rhythm across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition straightforward because there was very little I wanted to interfere with. The bridge already carried the photograph. Its reflection added symmetry, while the surrounding towers introduced a second layer—the contemporary city rising behind architecture that speaks to a much older visual tradition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2015, and what stays with me is how briefly everything aligned. Water this calm does not remain that way for long. A breeze, passing boat or changing light could have broken the reflection completely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a few minutes, though, Chengdu seemed to pause. I was drawn to the layers immediately—the bartender facing away from me in his cowboy hat, the illuminated drinks cooler, bottles lined across the counter and an old Ford grille mounted against the back wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a lot happening in the frame, yet the bartender gives everything a centre. He stands almost in silhouette, surrounded by objects, handwritten details and accumulated pieces of the bar’s personality. Above him, the currency creates a dense, irregular canopy that seems to press down into the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for this photograph. It reduces all that visual clutter into light, shadow, texture and shape. The refrigerator glows on one side, a table lamp burns brightly on the other, and the darker centre of the room holds the bartender between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most about places like this is how much character can collect in a relatively small space. Nothing feels designed for a photograph. The bottles, old automotive pieces, hanging money and worn counter have simply accumulated into something distinctive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to keep. From a distance, the individual buildings almost disappear into one enormous pattern of colour, repetition and density.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat visual compression is what fascinated me. There is barely any empty space. One structure sits above another, then another, climbing relentlessly across the hillside. Most share the same deep red and brown tones, but small flashes of green, turquoise, yellow and brighter crimson appear in windows, doors and fabric, breaking up the repetition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe scale is difficult to understand until I start looking closely. Every small rectangle is a home. Paths wind between them, buildings lean into the contours of the land, and the settlement seems to have grown organically rather than according to any simple grid.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLarung Gar sits at roughly 12,500 feet, and its isolation was part of what made being there so memorable for me. Yet photographically, I kept returning to the visual structure of the place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted the frame to feel almost overwhelming—to let the homes fill it completely, without sky or distant landscape providing relief. For me, that density is the photograph. Their scale immediately changes the character of the neighbourhood around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to photograph both murals together rather than isolate either one. That wider view mattered. Between them are hedges, railings, road signs, pavement, windows and rows of modest homes. These everyday details give the murals context and show how completely they are woven into the surrounding streetscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast weather helped. Colour was already subdued, and I kept the treatment restrained so the large figures and graphic shapes would remain visually dominant. The red clothing on the right-hand mural survives against an otherwise muted scene, drawing the eye across the frame without overwhelming everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was the stillness. There were no crowds gathered in front of the murals and nothing staged for the camera. The street simply continued around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDerry contains history in unusually visible ways, and here it occupies the walls of residential buildings rather than a separate exhibition space. I wanted enough distance from the city to let those individual structures separate rather than collapse into one dense mass.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe water became an important part of the composition. It creates space across the foreground and allows the skyline to sit comfortably beneath an enormous Western Australian sky. The clear blue light gives the photograph a completely different character from the dense urban scenes I often photograph at street level.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also liked the mixture of architecture. Tall commercial towers dominate the centre, while lower waterfront buildings, public spaces and the sculptural forms around Elizabeth Quay soften the transition between the city and the river. On the right, the warmer brick architecture provides a visual counterpoint to all the glass and steel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePerth struck me as a city where the relationship between downtown and the water is difficult to separate. Standing here, both were part of the same scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to photograph—not simply a collection of skyscrapers, but the wider shape of Perth itself. New York's skyline has changed considerably since then, making this not only a cityscape but a record of Manhattan at a particular moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to the compression of buildings along the waterfront. Towers of different heights and periods rise almost shoulder to shoulder, creating a dense rhythm of windows, vertical lines and architectural shapes. Construction cranes appear among them, another reminder that New York is rarely finished.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe river gives the photograph room to breathe. Its broad horizontal surface separates me from the city while the skyline forms a solid band beneath the enormous sky. Above it, the clouds become darker and more complicated, pressing down visually on the buildings and giving the scene a weight that would disappear on a clear day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white was an obvious choice for me. Colour would have added information I did not need. In monochrome, the photograph becomes about structure, weather, scale and the subtle tonal differences between stone, glass, water and cloud.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have photographed New York many times, but the city is never quite the same twice. Buildings rise, skylines change and familiar views slowly become historical. The corrugated metal roof had buckled and lifted away from its supports, while the long wooden porch sagged beneath a collection of objects that had simply been left behind.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat disorder is what caught my attention. Nothing about the building felt preserved or arranged. Weathered boards overlap one another, doors hang unevenly, windows sit behind rough shutters, and an old chair remains near the centre of the porch. The house seems caught somewhere between still being recognizable as a home and gradually becoming part of the landscape around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was secondary to what interested me—the warped metal, aged timber, deep doorway, rough grass and the extraordinary accumulation of texture across the facade. The darker treatment also gives the open interior a sense of depth without trying to make the scene artificially dramatic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned places because time becomes visible in them. Each facade seems to belong to a slightly different architectural language—dark, heavily ornamented masonry on the left, a domed structure rising through the centre, and the lighter, more decorative building facing it from across the square.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep that entire relationship in the frame rather than concentrate on a single building. The broad paving in the foreground creates distance, allowing the architecture to unfold gradually as the eye moves deeper into the scene. Bicycles line one side, cars occupy the narrow passage ahead, and a few people cross the square, giving just enough scale to understand the size of the surrounding structures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast sky suited the scene. Its soft light reveals the stonework without harsh shadows, while the subdued colour keeps attention on the elaborate facades, windows, domes and sculptural details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am often more interested in the spaces between important buildings than in photographing landmarks individually. A square like this shows how architecture functions together—how different structures, streets and public spaces accumulate into the character of an old European city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that layering is what makes the photograph interesting. What finally interested me was the way two very different sections of the building collided within the frame. One facade sweeps diagonally across the photograph in a disciplined pattern of recessed windows, while the other becomes a tighter arrangement of balconies, glass and rectangular compartments.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe geometry is complicated, yet there is still order in it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was unnecessary. Removing it pushed the photograph further away from a conventional architectural record and toward line, repetition, contrast and shape. The bright exterior panels become almost white against the deep window openings, making the entire surface feel graphic and dimensional at the same time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eVIA 57 West was designed by Bjarke Ingels Group, and its unusual form has always stood apart for me among Manhattan's modern buildings. Soft pink and orange reached the mountain peaks while cooler blues remained across the lake and lower landscape. Above everything, heavy clouds caught traces of the same pastel colour. For a few minutes, warm and cool tones existed together without either one overwhelming the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe still water was equally important. Reflections beneath the tufa formations extend their shapes downward and create a visual balance between the rugged rock and the smooth surface of Mono Lake.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been attracted to landscapes that feel slightly unfamiliar, and the tufa towers give Mono Lake that quality immediately. They look sculptural, almost improbable, particularly when separated by quiet water and viewed against the mountains beyond.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph is about that combination: unusual geology, open water, distant mountains and the fleeting colour of sunrise. The landscape already had everything it needed. That irregularity is precisely what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the building straight on because the facade already had a strong structure. Vertical support beams divide the frame, horizontal boards create repetition, and the central doorway gives the photograph an anchor. Behind the glass, patterned curtains remain visible, introducing an unexpectedly delicate detail among all the heavy timber and weathered surfaces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white concentrates everything on texture. Splintered boards, cracked plaster, worn paint and dark gaps between the timbers become more important than colour. The building feels tactile, almost as though every surface has recorded another season of exposure and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me about rural architecture is rarely perfection. I am much more drawn to buildings that reveal how they were made, altered and repaired over time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis farmhouse had that quality everywhere. The boards, doors and windows do not feel decorative; they feel practical and accumulated. The scene has the density of a working city, but the relatively calm surface turns much of that activity into colour and distorted reflections.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was particularly drawn to the large yellow building rising above the street. Its warm facade immediately separates it from the quieter stone buildings around it, and that same colour returns in the water beneath. Bare trees weave through the architecture, pedestrians move along the promenade, and dozens of modest boats create an irregular line between the city and the harbor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep all of those layers together. Moving closer to the architecture would have lost the boats; concentrating on the marina would have removed the character of Rijeka behind it. From this viewpoint, both belong to the same photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me about port cities is that their relationship with the water is visible everywhere. Streets, buildings, boats and daily life all meet at the shoreline.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, the reflections complete that connection. The architecture does not simply stop at the harbor's edge—it continues downward into the water, broken into long streaks of yellow, gray, blue and red. Without colour, the repeating rooflines, pale walls, darker trees and small streets become more obvious. I offer the Czech cityscape as wall art in a choice of print sizes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe darkness above Prague is almost as important to me as the illuminated architecture below it. There is an enormous amount of open sky in this photograph, giving the city room to sit quietly beneath it rather than filling every part of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePrague Castle rises in the distance, its towers and spires illuminated above the surrounding buildings. Closer to the river, ornate architecture stretches across the frame in a mixture of white, gold and cooler blue light. Those colours continue downward into the Vltava River, where the reflections become softer and less precise, broken into long vertical bands by the movement of the water.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like the layering in this view. The river creates the foreground, the buildings form a bright horizontal band through the centre, and the castle sits higher on the hill behind them. Nothing needs to dominate completely. My eye moves from the reflections to the architecture and then gradually upward toward the castle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePrague is extraordinarily rich visually, particularly after daylight disappears and individual buildings begin to separate through artificial light. In this photograph, the city feels almost theatrical without losing the sense of a real place.
