Nothing quite lines up anymore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the wall straight on because I didn't want perspective to distract from those textures. The entire frame becomes a collection of surfaces: old glass, splintered boards, crumbling plaster, brick, faded paint and weathered wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is something about Havana's aging architecture that I find endlessly photographic. I don't see decay simply as deterioration. I see layers. Repairs are made, paint is added and disappears, windows are patched rather than replaced, and the building continues to change.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2005. It was completely out of place—a boat built for the water stranded inside an industrial building that was itself slowly falling apart.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction made the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe red paint had peeled away in long irregular streaks, exposing bare wood and traces of green underneath. Behind it, decades of wear had transformed the brick wall into layers of faded paint, stains and exposed masonry. Even the staircase seems to have become part of the decay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition square and relatively tight because I wanted the boat and wall to become almost graphic. The diagonal of the hull cuts hard across the frame, while the staircase moves in the opposite direction. Against all those subdued browns, creams and grays, the remaining red paint refuses to disappear.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed this scene in 2006, not far from my studio in Ontario. I never learned how the boat ended up inside the factory, and I think I prefer not knowing. The mystery is part of what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph was later selected for publication in Black \u0026amp; White Magazine’s Colour Special Edition, which felt particularly appropriate. Color is essential here. Without that battered red hull, it simply wouldn't be the same photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSometimes the most interesting subjects aren't where they belong. At first the scene seems overwhelmingly blue, but the closer I looked, the more colors began to emerge. Violet and faded red remain in the door. Pale markings and scratched graffiti wander across the wall. Stains run vertically through the surface, while patches of old paint reveal layer after layer underneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is that tiny plant growing directly beneath the doorway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love details like that. Against this massive, scarred surface, a few green leaves introduce something alive and temporary. The door itself feels almost absorbed into the wall, as though both have been aging together for decades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene straight on because I wanted very little interpretation between me and what I had found. The wall becomes the composition. Texture, color, scratches, stains and imperfections become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing India so much. Extraordinary photographs don't always announce themselves. The weathered wooden boards are dark and worn, almost disappearing into the shadow of the doorway, while the surrounding brickwork carries an entirely different kind of presence: pale paint, stains, exposed masonry, cracks, and years of uneven decay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this scene in Haliburton, Ontario, in 2008. It was one of those overlooked industrial corners that most people would pass without a second glance. I tend to stop at places like this because the surface tells the story. Here, the wall is not one colour or one texture. It shifts from deep brown brick to faded green, chalky white, and soft lavender-grey, with vertical streaks that seem to record years of rain and exposure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition works because of the tension between structure and collapse. The door and the vertical seams in the wall give the photograph order, but the broken bricks, splintered wood, and scattered rubble along the bottom edge interrupt that order immediately. Nothing is polished. Nothing has been cleaned up for the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is exactly what interested me. It cuts diagonally across the brick wall, dividing the photograph into a series of rough geometric shapes while the repeating steps pull the eye upward into the darker corner of the factory.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat caught me was the collision between order and decay. The stairs are rigid, functional and repetitive; everything around them is wearing away. Paint has peeled from the brickwork. Dark streaks run down the steps. Patches of warm brown, grey, faded white and ochre shift across the walls, revealing layer after layer of use and exposure. Even the vertical column near the centre seems to separate two different histories of the same interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned industrial spaces because they are full of compositions that were never designed to be photographs. Nothing here was arranged for appearance. The staircase existed simply to move people from one level to another, yet once the factory fell silent, its shape became the dominant visual element. The strong diagonal gives the scene movement, while the worn brick and stained surfaces slow the eye down and reward a closer look.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made this photograph in 2008. What interests me now is the same thing that interested me then: the evidence of time. The structure remains recognizable and purposeful, but every surface carries the marks of age, neglect and weathering. By then, vegetation had begun to take over the entrance, weeds were pushing up along the base, and the garage door and narrow side window carried the wear of years. What fascinated me was the tension between neglect and design. The concrete-block walls are plain and utilitarian, yet the tiered parapet above them creates a strong geometric silhouette that refuses to disappear quietly.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for the scene. Without colour, the photograph becomes about shape, surface, and contrast: pale masonry against dark foliage, the irregular panels of the old door, the deep window opening, and even the loose wire dropping down the facade. Nothing is polished. That is exactly what gives the photograph its character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am drawn to places like this because they are easy to overlook. They are rarely landmarks and almost never destinations. They simply sit beside the road until age, weather, and vegetation slowly change them. This little Indiana garage had reached that point where the ordinary had become distinctive. That closer viewpoint turned the driver's space into the subject. The thin steering wheel, long gear lever, old instrument cluster, worn bench seat, peeling surfaces, and branches reaching into the cab carry the story on their own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for the scene because so much of the photograph is about shape, texture, and deterioration. The sweeping curve of the door frame becomes a border around the interior, while the bright forest beyond the windshield pushes against the dark dashboard and steering column. Nature is visible through every opening, but it is also beginning to move inside.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most is not simply that the Dodge was abandoned. It is the strange intimacy of seeing a machine from the driver's position after its working life has ended. The controls remain recognizable. The seat is still there. Yet the cab has become part vehicle, part woodland debris. Across this Maine rock face, layers of white, turquoise, purple, and faded markings sit against stone streaked with rust orange, brown, grey, and ochre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to the way the graffiti does not simply sit on top of the rock. The fractures, ledges, stains, and mineral colour seem to break the painted marks apart, so the human gestures become part of the surface rather than a separate layer. Some words are still legible; others have faded into fragments. From a distance, the whole wall begins to work almost like an abstract composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat tension is what made the photograph interesting to me. Rock suggests permanence. Graffiti is usually fleeting. Here, the two occupy the same space, one weathering slowly while the other is already disappearing into it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Maine in 2018, but what matters most to me is the texture and contradiction within the frame. The warm natural colour of the stone dominates, while the scattered graffiti interrupts it just enough to keep the eye moving. One massive concrete opening leads to another, then another, drawing the eye steadily through the abandoned factory until the architecture seems to disappear into darkness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this industrial ruin in Ontario, where years of neglect had stripped the interior down to its basic structure. Rough concrete columns dominate the foreground. Beyond them, worn floorboards, scattered debris, broken material and a large leaning panel interrupt what was once an orderly working space. There is very little left to soften the building. That emptiness is part of what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because the photograph is really about structure, texture and depth. Without colour competing for attention, the repeated rectangular forms become much stronger. Light catching the edges of the concrete separates each successive opening, while the darker recesses keep pulling the photograph farther back into the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been fascinated by abandoned places because they reveal architecture in a way occupied buildings rarely do. Once the machinery, people and daily activity disappear, the bones of the place become visible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, those bones are almost geometric. The heavy vertical columns, horizontal beams and receding doorways create a surprisingly ordered composition inside a space otherwise defined by decay. Years of wear had stripped away much of its original intensity, leaving a surface of faded pigment, exposed wood and irregular marks that made this doorway far more interesting than something freshly painted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found these wooden doors at the Great Wall of China. Rather than concentrating only on the immense scale of the Wall itself, I was drawn toward this smaller architectural detail. The broad red frame, repeated rectangular windows and tightly divided panes create an almost rigid geometry, yet every section of wood carries evidence of weathering and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what holds the photograph together for me. The structure is orderly. The surface is not.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAcross the doors, red paint has worn into rusty orange, brown and pale exposed wood. Some window panels remain dark while others appear almost white, breaking the repetition just enough to keep the pattern from becoming too perfect. At the centre, the small lock and metal hardware become an understated focal point amid all those larger rectangles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always found doors photographically intriguing because they are both architectural objects and boundaries. They suggest another space without revealing very much about it. New York street art was everywhere, but this particular combination stopped me. Someone had created the figure on the right, another face occupied the wall above it, and layers of unrelated graffiti had accumulated around both. Nothing was designed as a complete composition, yet together it worked.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat accidental quality is what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in black and white, allowing the brickwork, painted lines, dark doorways and graphic street art to compete on equal terms. The photograph is visually busy, but the missing head gives the eye somewhere to settle. Even the No Parking sign and pole slicing vertically through the frame become part of the disorder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOver the years I began calling the photograph Lost Head. It became one of those images people remembered and, later, tried to locate for themselves.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNew York constantly changes. Walls are repainted, buildings disappear and street art can vanish overnight. The house seems caught somewhere between still being recognizable as a home and gradually becoming part of the landscape around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was secondary to what interested me—the warped metal, aged timber, deep doorway, rough grass and the extraordinary accumulation of texture across the facade. The darker treatment also gives the open interior a sense of depth without trying to make the scene artificially dramatic.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been drawn to abandoned places because time becomes visible in them. Vertical support beams divide the frame, horizontal boards create repetition, and the central doorway gives the photograph an anchor. Behind the glass, patterned curtains remain visible, introducing an unexpectedly delicate detail among all the heavy timber and weathered surfaces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white concentrates everything on texture. Splintered boards, cracked plaster, worn paint and dark gaps between the timbers become more important than colour. The building feels tactile, almost as though every surface has recorded another season of exposure and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me about rural architecture is rarely perfection. I am much more drawn to buildings that reveal how they were made, altered and repaired over time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis farmhouse had that quality everywhere. The boards, doors and windows do not feel decorative; they feel practical and accumulated. Its body is worn and faded, with the towing rig still rising behind it, while two smaller damaged vehicles sit close beside it. Farther back, another old truck is tucked beneath a simple roof beside a weathered wooden building. Nothing in the scene feels arranged. The vehicles, sheds, trees and rough ground have simply accumulated into a picture of use, neglect and passing years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because colour was not what interested me here. The photograph is really about texture: aged boards, corrugated roofs, worn metal, grass and the dense canopy of trees surrounding everything. Removing the colour lets those surfaces and shapes carry more of the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is the relationship between the vehicles and the buildings. Neither feels separate from the other. Together they suggest a rural working place that has changed gradually, leaving older machines and structures behind rather than clearing them away. The rounded roof, open window spaces and remaining panels hold together as a single subject, while fallen bodywork sits lower in the foreground. There is very little shine left. Instead, the surface carries orange, brown and darker patches that give each section a different texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the contrast between the truck’s weight and the openness above it. The ground is pale and rough, the surrounding vegetation dry, and the sky offers a cooler colour that keeps the rust from dominating everything. The composition lets the vehicle remain firmly part of the landscape rather than isolating it as a museum object.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI do not know the truck’s working history, and the photograph leaves that story open. What I wanted to hold onto was the encounter itself: an old machine still visibly present in a place where weather and time have changed it. The tall walls leave only a small opening of sky above, so the view feels enclosed without becoming visually blocked. A yellow caution notice adds another compact block of colour near the top, offsetting the longer vertical lines below it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn my original exploration of this machinery, the mechanics and the play of light across the surfaces were what held my attention. For this photograph, made in 2022, a close composition lets those details carry the image. There is no need to see an entire workshop to recognise the weight and physical character of the equipment.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the way the photograph moves between a recognisable piece of machinery and an almost abstract arrangement of colour and texture. The controls remain readable as objects, but the worn paint becomes its own landscape. Vehicles like this caught my attention because they belonged to the setting without needing to be polished into showpieces. Here, the truck’s surface has the irregular markings that make a close view rewarding: pale patches, dark streaks, and lettering that has become difficult to read.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe viewpoint gives those details room while keeping the motor court in the scene. The truck fills the left side; the stone-faced building sits farther back on the right. Between them, the front wheel, parking lines, and pavement lead into the distance. An antenna rises through the sky, balancing the heavier shapes below.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWorking in monochrome puts the emphasis on those relationships. The whitewall tyre forms a bright ring against the darker wheel, and the building’s stonework answers the mottled bodywork. I like that the photograph stays rooted in an ordinary roadside encounter.
