A blue station wagon fills the foreground while an open-top classic car travels ahead, its passengers visible above the deep red bodywork. Another old car appears farther down the street. Together they lead my eye directly into the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me is how naturally these remarkable vehicles fit into the scene. In almost any other city, a car like this would attract attention at a show or sit polished in someone's collection. In Havana, these aging American cars are woven into everyday life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe architecture matters just as much. Tall, weathered buildings press closely against the narrow street. Balconies, old stonework, barred windows, overhead wires and traditional street lamps surround the cars. Nothing feels staged or arranged for the camera.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also like the restrained color in this photograph. The faded blue of the station wagon and the dark red convertible stand apart from the pale, timeworn buildings without overpowering them. The cars provide the color; Havana provides the texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's what I remember most about photographing Cuba. History never seemed confined to museums or monuments. Each facade seems to belong to a slightly different architectural language—dark, heavily ornamented masonry on the left, a domed structure rising through the centre, and the lighter, more decorative building facing it from across the square.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep that entire relationship in the frame rather than concentrate on a single building. The broad paving in the foreground creates distance, allowing the architecture to unfold gradually as the eye moves deeper into the scene. Bicycles line one side, cars occupy the narrow passage ahead, and a few people cross the square, giving just enough scale to understand the size of the surrounding structures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast sky suited the scene. Its soft light reveals the stonework without harsh shadows, while the subdued colour keeps attention on the elaborate facades, windows, domes and sculptural details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am often more interested in the spaces between important buildings than in photographing landmarks individually. A square like this shows how architecture functions together—how different structures, streets and public spaces accumulate into the character of an old European city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that layering is what makes the photograph interesting. There is no single subject demanding attention. From there, it keeps moving into the distance, sometimes clearly defined and sometimes almost absorbed by the rocky landscape. That repetition is what holds the photograph together. Wall, tower, ridge. Then another wall, another tower, another rise.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because the scene was already largely about texture and structure. The stonework, bare vegetation and exposed rock all sit within a narrow tonal range, while the pale sky removes almost every distraction above the mountains. Without strong colour competing for attention, the shape of the Great Wall becomes much easier to follow through the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also like that the photograph does not make the terrain look gentle. The walls climb steep slopes, drop into valleys and continue across uneven ground, which gives a much stronger sense of the relationship between the architecture and the landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStanding there, that was what interested me most. The Great Wall of China is immediately recognizable, but from this viewpoint it becomes something more than a landmark. I photographed these hillside homes on Capri, Italy, during a summer visit in 2005. Nearby facades show arched openings and smaller architectural details, while taller trees rise between the buildings. Behind them, a steep rocky hillside fills the upper background. I like that the landscape remains part of the picture even though the architecture occupies much of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eExploring Capri’s alleys and winding streets gave me many changing viewpoints. This one kept my attention because of the way the homes overlap. Rooflines and balconies lead from one building to another, and the trees soften the more regular edges. Monochrome makes those connections easier to follow, with the light walls standing apart from the darker foliage.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph recalls a summer encounter through shape and texture rather than bright colour. It is a quieter view of Capri, centred on the buildings and hillside instead of a broad coastal vista. As wall art, it can appeal to someone who enjoys Italian architecture, Mediterranean towns or black and white travel photography. I photographed this aerial view of Arctic waters while departing the Alaska coast in a small airplane in 2011. Sunset light brings a warm tone to the ocean, turning its fine ripples into a closely textured field.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere is no horizon in the frame. The water itself becomes the whole view, with brighter areas on one side and deeper tones on the other. The curving line provides a route through that texture, bending across the picture rather than dividing it neatly. I like how the composition stays recognisable as water while also suggesting an abstract surface.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFrom the aircraft, the scale changed how I saw the scene. Small ripples gathered into larger patterns, and shifts in brightness became more visible than individual waves. The warm light softened the colour differences, leaving the curve and the repeated marks of the surface to carry most of the visual interest.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph holds the pleasure of seeing a familiar natural subject from an unfamiliar height. It is a quieter aerial image, focused on one part of the ocean rather than a broad view of the coastline. As wall art, it can appeal to someone drawn to abstract nature photography, water textures or restrained colour. Its rough silhouette and pale snow stand against the softer cloud cover. Across the photograph, the restrained grey tones let texture matter more than colour: delicate marks in the sand, small dark fragments on the beach, and broken rock shapes in the distance.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat drew me in was the simplicity of the view. There is no single large foreground object to claim attention, so I can follow the lines and discover small changes in their direction. The subdued colour keeps weathered wood and rusted roofing close to the tones of the earth.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThere is still enough of the nearest building standing to read its form. Two dark openings punctuate the upright boards, while the roof sags above them in uneven strips. Beside it, a wall has tipped outward, its rectangular frame resting among other fallen pieces. I find that transition from recognisable architecture to loose material especially compelling.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe foreground gives the photograph much of its direction. Thin beams cross one another, and a broad rust coloured panel lies almost flat beneath the ruin. These lines lead into the standing structure, then toward the other rooftops farther back. Soft light makes the wood’s fine grain visible without turning the scene into a display of harsh shadows.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAbove all of this, the ridge opens into pale snow and dark patches of exposed slope. I wanted the buildings to remain part of that larger setting rather than become isolated details. The image leaves room to consider both the close texture of an abandoned place and the scale of the landscape around it. I photographed this California hillside in 2009, bringing a small group of rugged shapes into a deliberately open landscape view.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTwo taller trunks stand near the middle, each with a broken upper outline and a different set of remaining branches. One rises almost straight, while the other spreads sideways before reaching upward. Fallen wood lies farther left, following the incline in longer, lower shapes. I find the spacing between these forms particularly interesting. They do not make a continuous woodland; each has enough pale ground around it to show its own character.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSmall stones cover nearly the entire hillside, creating an even texture that contrasts with the more pronounced grooves of the wood. The slope rises toward the upper right, and a soft grey blue sky fills the opposite side. There are few competing details, so the main diagonal gives the photograph much of its structure. My interest is in how a sparse landscape can remain visually rich through shape and surface alone. The restrained colour allows the trees to stand out gently rather than through a dramatic palette. Her position above the street gives the architecture scale and turns the scene into a moment of everyday life as well as a study of surfaces.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI worked the image in restrained toned monochrome to bring out the cracked plaster, stained walls and patterned pavement. Cables and drainpipes remain visible, along with flowerpots and the iron balcony. These imperfections are part of what interested me. I photographed the room in black and white, keeping the tatami floor, dark beams, and small household objects beside the chest within the frame. The furniture gives the quiet interior a textured centre, while the floor borders and wall framing create a clear arrangement of lines around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph while exploring historic residences during my travels in Japan. On entering the room, I was drawn to the chest’s worn surface and the repeated handles across its drawers. Rather than move closer to isolate the furniture, I included the adjacent doorway and the objects resting at floor level. That wider view lets the chest remain part of the room. The opening on the left leads into another space, and the soft light across the tatami gives the foreground enough detail without competing with the darker wood.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat I enjoy is the difference between the room’s simple geometry and the more intricate surfaces within it. The drawer fronts have their own grain patterns, metal fittings add small curves, and the objects beside them introduce rounded forms against the straight floor lines. Monochrome brings those materials together while allowing each texture to remain visible. For someone drawn to Japanese interiors or quiet architectural photography, this image offers a close look at a room I encountered on my travels.
