There is no dramatic sunset and no bright blue sky competing with the architecture. Instead, the muted atmosphere lets the warm roof tiles, dark stone, and soft greens of the hillside settle into one restrained palette. The clock face and tower become natural points of focus without needing to be exaggerated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Black Church is one of Brasov’s defining landmarks, but I wanted the photograph to show more than the building alone. By keeping the surrounding rooftops and mountain in the composition, I could place it within the city rather than separate it from the place that gives it context. I photographed the medieval stone complex in black and white beneath a broad overcast sky, letting its broken walls, central tower, arches, and rough masonry carry the image.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy wife and I came across the abbey while travelling through Ireland in 2019, only about a 15-minute walk from the much better-known Rock of Cashel. That contrast stayed with me. The Rock draws the attention, yet just beyond it sits this extraordinary ruin in the open countryside, quieter and far less imposing in the way it announces itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is built around that sense of isolation. A wide field separates me from the structure, while the empty sky gives the abbey room to stand almost as a piece of sculpture. The surviving walls still reveal the shape of the original Gothic church, but sections have collapsed into irregular stone forms. In black and white, those textures become more pronounced: weathered blocks, dark openings, broken rooflines, and the soft grass surrounding them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHore Abbey began as a Benedictine monastery before passing to the Cistercians in the 13th century, becoming the last pre-Reformation Cistercian foundation in Ireland. Between them, the central entrance sits behind a small roofed gate, almost hidden by the hedge. It is a curious little interruption in an already complicated facade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the mansion in France, keeping the viewpoint straight and deliberate so the structure could dominate the frame. The dark hedges create a heavy base, while the bright, restless sky gives the upper half of the photograph movement. Those clouds matter. Rather than searching for one of Barcelona's grand landmarks, I was interested in the quieter streets—the places where the city reveals itself through texture, proportion and accumulated detail.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe composition pulls me straight into the passage. Broad stone steps enter from the left, while the paved lane continues between tall buildings toward a dark doorway at the far end. Balconies rise above it, an old wall lamp projects into the narrow space, and a metal shutter marked with graffiti introduces something unmistakably contemporary into an otherwise aged setting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right because the photograph is really about surfaces and structure. Rough stone, smoother masonry, dark window openings and irregular paving all separate through tone rather than colour. The absence of people makes the street feel unusually still.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBarcelona's Gothic Quarter can be crowded and energetic, but scenes like this have always interested me more. At Wupatki National Monument, the structure and its surroundings gave me plenty to work with in one compact view.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe foreground shrub occupies a substantial part of the frame. Its fine, tangled branches catch the light against the darker earth, while a fuller bush stands farther back on the left. Those irregular shapes lead toward the much firmer outline of the pueblo above them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to the contrast between the straight edges of the walls and the broken rock beneath. Light reaches one face of the tower more strongly than another, so its form remains clear even in the deeper tones. The lower walls step across the rocky base toward the open space on the right.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe sky is simple, moving from dark overhead to a pale band near the horizon. That gradual change sets off the ruins without introducing another busy texture. It also leaves room for the brush and stone to carry the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat I value here is the relationship between architecture and desert terrain. A high curved opening sits above another arched frame, then the partly open doors occupy the lower center. Boards cross one damaged panel, while other openings reveal light beyond. I like how the building’s original symmetry is still readable despite all those interruptions. Below them, the wall becomes increasingly difficult to separate from the leaves and stems covering it. I framed the building from the graveyard, bringing a row of differently shaped headstones into the foreground. Their upright forms repeat the tower on a smaller scale.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe square composition holds that upward movement without excluding the grass at the base. Dark foliage gives weight to the left side, while clouds leave more open space around the tower. In monochrome, the texture of the stones, the mass of ivy and the markings on the headstones become parts of the same tonal landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI found the meeting of ruin and growth compelling here. The church remains recognizable, but its edges soften where plants take over. Rather than assigning stories to the people commemorated in the graveyard, I wanted to show the place as I encountered it. The black and white treatment makes the pale stone and darker glass distinct without separating them from the rest of the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI left some of the setting around the chapel. A large tree occupies the left side, neighbouring buildings appear to the right, and a broad lawn lies in front. Their lower shapes allow the towers to remain prominent, while the clouds keep the sky from becoming an empty backdrop. Looking at the finished photograph, my attention returns to the balance between the two towers and the single large window. Pale plaster on the right is cracked and patchy, while the doorway on the left stays much darker. The paving catches enough light for its irregular pattern to remain visible across the foreground. I find the contrast between those rough textures and the bright lamps especially effective. The woman’s slight blur adds a different quality: a brief human presence within the much firmer lines of the lane. Another projecting section repeats the roof shape farther back, while a smaller facade closes the distance on the left. There are no people in the frame. The empty paving lets me follow the buildings without losing the sense of space between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat stays with me is the unevenness of the surfaces. Brickwork darkens near the ground, roof tiles form fine repeated lines, and the wet pavement holds scattered lighter patches. Monochrome brings those details together without flattening them. The light picks out those different heights rather than giving the entire facade the same brightness.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTo the right, the museum building has a broader, more horizontal shape. Its row of rounded windows provides another rhythm beside the church’s pointed forms. Between them, narrower facades bring a finer scale of detail into the frame. I wanted to keep that group of buildings intact because the church feels more substantial when it is seen in its setting.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe paving gives the photograph a quieter foreground. A patterned section crosses the lower part of the square, with small reflections gathering near the lamps. I found myself noticing more as I stayed there: the change between lit and unlit windows, the outlines against the sky, and the space around the buildings. Stone slabs, a small mat and scattered leaves lead toward the door, rather than leaving it isolated on the wall. Much of the surrounding interior stays dark, making that route through the rooms especially clear.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe nearest doorway has a strong outline, while the one beyond appears smaller within it. I wanted to keep that progression visible without making the corridor evenly bright. The lighter edges give the eye enough to follow, and the shadow allows the spaces between them to retain their depth.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOn the right, tall decorative panels repeat slender Gothic shapes along the wall. A staircase rises beside them, with light touching only parts of the lower treads. The floorboards add another texture below: broad grain and long seams that change direction as the view moves through the doorway. These quieter details reward a closer look after the arches first draw attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePhotographing this interior made me slow down. I was interested in how little illumination was needed to reveal the architecture, and how much atmosphere remained in the darker areas. I chose a close view of the architecture, with a broad arch crossing above a row of pointed openings. In black and white, the bright glass, dark columns, and patterned masonry make a detailed study of the church interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA large pier occupies the left side of the photograph, its surface divided into small blocks, darker patches, and bands of carved ornament. Beyond it, slender columns separate the windows and carry the eye upward to their pointed tops. The window grids repeat within those larger shapes, creating smaller patterns inside the sweep of the arches. I liked the way the composition moved from heavy masonry close to me toward the lighter openings farther across the space.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI gave myself time to look before settling on this fragment of the interior. The available light revealed differences across the walls and carvings while leaving enough shadow to keep the forms distinct. Including only part of the church let me concentrate on those relationships without losing them in a wider view. The photograph holds a sense of height, yet its interest also lies in the small changes from one column, window, and stone surface to the next.
