I photographed it tightly because I wanted the architecture itself to take over the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat compressed perspective is what gives the photograph its strength. The nearest columns feel massive, while those farther along the building create a rhythm that pulls my eye through the composition. Between them are layers of decorative masonry, balustrades, ornamental carving, recessed doorways, and wrought iron. I also discovered that the building was associated with the Bank of Nova Scotia, which gave it an unexpected Canadian connection for me. That interested me personally, but the reason I made the photograph was much simpler: those repeating columns were impossible to ignore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white strips the scene down to what matters most. The pale stone catches the light along the projecting surfaces while the entrances and ironwork fall into much deeper tones. Without color competing for attention, the fluting, carved stone, repeating arches, geometric structure, and changing scale become far more prominent. I had the opposite opportunity here.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found this old classic car mounted on the roof of a business in Toronto, being used as an oversized ornament. Standing underneath it gave me a view I rarely get with an automobile: the front end hanging above me with virtually nothing behind it. That was the photograph. Not the entire car, not the business, and not even particularly the location. It was this peculiar angle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLooking upward, the familiar parts of the car begin to behave more like shapes. Two large round headlights sit above another pair of circular lights. Curved chrome cuts diagonally through the frame. The front tire drops toward the bottom edge, while dents, scratches, cracked glass, worn metal, and weathered surfaces interrupt all of that geometry. It is still unmistakably an old automobile, but seen this way it becomes something stranger. That unusual perspective separates it from the more conventional photographs in my \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/dankosmayer.com\/collections\/classic-car-wall-art\" title=\"classic car wall art\"\u003eclassic car wall art\u003c\/a\u003e collection.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because color was not carrying the photograph. Removing it concentrates everything on form, surface, contrast, and repetition. The circles become stronger. The aged chrome becomes more tactile. Tire tread, damaged metal, headlight glass, and years of wear become part of the structure rather than secondary details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe large white area is equally important to me. Without a road, building, landscape, or recognizable environment surrounding the vehicle, there is very little to explain what I am looking at. The car seems suspended in space. I deliberately kept that emptiness rather than filling the frame, because it gives the heavy mechanical subject an unexpected sense of weightlessness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, this photograph is less about automotive nostalgia than about discovering a visual arrangement that could only exist because the car was somewhere a car normally would not be.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI can see this black-and-white photograph appealing particularly to collectors of classic automobiles, mechanical subjects, industrial imagery, and unconventional automotive photography. In travel photography I am usually searching for something already happening. In the studio, I could move an object slightly, alter the light, and watch the entire geometry of the photograph change. That viewpoint gives the architecture a strong, deliberate geometry: the triangular roof above, the long horizontal facade below and the repeating diamond pattern of the fence across the entire frame. Against all of that structure, the woman's painted face becomes the point my eye keeps returning to. She is partially interrupted by the fence, but that obstruction is exactly what made me want the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because the scene already contained so much visual information. Removing color concentrates attention on the mural, the wire, the deteriorated masonry, the roof shingles, the graffiti lettering and the contrast between the dark painted face and the lighter wall. From across a room, the face and building create the immediate graphic impact. Closer inspection reveals the fence pattern, peeling surfaces and smaller marks accumulated across the facade.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI can see this photograph working particularly well for collectors drawn to urban photography, street art, architectural decay and less conventional images of the Caribbean. It has enough structure for a contemporary interior, but it still carries the roughness and unpredictability of the street where I found it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph is offered as a limited edition of only 10 prints. I personally sign each print, and each one includes a certificate of authenticity.
