A willow can be recognized by its hanging form, but a group of them offers countless overlapping paths to trace. The color photograph keeps the brightness of spring while retaining those individual structures. The long piece of wood provides a firm line through all the smaller forms, while upright plants near the bank introduce a different kind of growth. Brighter leaves fill the lower portion of the frame; toward the top, the water and reflections make the pattern less continuous.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph works through that balance of abundance and structure. There is a great deal to look at, but the diagonal log prevents the scene from becoming visually scattered. They lean and overlap behind the straighter lines, with long leaves gathered near the bottom. The garden encouraged me to slow down and notice how the shapes fitted together, from the uneven rocks at my feet to the roof edge overhead. The dark roof tiles and supports give the pale surfaces a clear outline, while the trees soften the building's corner on the left.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to the way the simple structure held so many differences in texture. The walls have large, uneven tonal areas; the roof repeats smaller tile shapes; and the foliage adds finer detail around them both. Including the path gave the photograph a route toward the door and kept the storehouse connected to the grounds where I found it.
