I photographed the scene in black and white during my 2017 visit to Cuba. The monochrome treatment brings the graffiti, worn plaster and dark doorway together without losing their very different textures.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI came across the building while wandering through Havana. What caught my attention was the way several images occupied the same modest stretch of wall: a rounded cartoon figure on the left, overlapping lettering near the middle and a face drawn at a much larger scale. The eyes hold the composition even where other marks interrupt them.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eAbove the paintings, a small barred opening and loose cables add another layer of lines. The roof edge, neighboring building and strip of cloudy sky keep the wall connected to its surroundings. I left enough pavement below it to give the photograph a clear base, rather than isolating the artwork as a close detail.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the strength of this photograph lies in that meeting of painted expression and everyday architecture. Crumbling patches remain visible beneath the drawing, while the door offers a solid, dark rectangle beside the face. I like how the arms extend towards the edges while the face remains the most detailed part of the composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI gave the photograph a warm orange treatment and a worn, textured appearance. That choice was intended to feel artistic while remaining respectful to my religious faith. Pale patches interrupt the darker paint across the face and clothing, while fine marks gather around the collar and sleeves. The fixed expression remains clear beneath that texture: wide eyes, an open mouth and the large moustache above it. I kept the view close so the wear would be part of the portrait rather than a detail lost in a wider street scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe stein has its own relief pattern, including a stag near the lower part. It fills much of the right side of the frame, balanced by the figure’s extended hand on the left. Behind, the brick wall provides a regular pattern that makes the uneven paint seem more pronounced. The figure was a familiar kind of pub decoration, but its condition made it particular. Small cracks, rubbed areas and uneven patches interrupt the smooth painted cheeks. Light catches the raised noses and rounded brows, while the eye openings and mouths become darker points. I kept the background less prominent, with enough surrounding objects visible to show that the masks were part of a larger group.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the photograph works between the familiar shape of a face and the visible surface of an object. The expressions feel lively, but the marks in the paint keep the masks tangible. Keeping the background out of focus allowed all of that texture to remain legible without adding competing shapes behind him.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the reasons I continue to make close portraits while travelling. A face can hold a photograph with very little surrounding information, yet the encounter still belongs to a real place and a particular moment. For someone drawn to travel portraits or spontaneous street photography, this image preserves a moment from my 2010 travels through India. This political poster in Chicago had already been torn, scraped and partially covered, yet the portrait, the name Kamala Harris and the large word FREEDOM were still clearly visible beneath all those deteriorating layers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was interested less in the poster as a political message than in what the street had done to it. Paper had peeled away in irregular sections. Older graphics appeared underneath. Marks, adhesive, scratches and fragments of other material had accumulated across the surface until the original design became part of something much less controlled.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat transformation is what interested me photographically.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI framed the poster tightly so there is almost nowhere else for the eye to go. The portrait remains the dominant element, but the torn edges and exposed layers continually interrupt it. Even the bold lettering across the bottom has begun to disappear, leaving the photograph balanced somewhere between documentary street photography and found urban abstraction.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white emphasizes those textures. The distinction between printed image, damaged paper and the surface beneath becomes less obvious, and everything begins to merge into one weathered composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often find these temporary scenes more interesting than something designed to last. A political poster may begin as a carefully controlled piece of communication, but once it reaches a city wall, weather and time take over. In the middle of crumpled paper and small objects, a mannequin head caught a narrow area of light. Much of the surrounding space remained dark. I photographed what was already there, drawn to the contrast between the smooth face and the folded, uneven material around it. The arrangement had enough detail to explore, but the illuminated profile gave me a clear place to begin.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe head faces to the right, with bright reflections along its cheek, nose and long neck. A fine horizontal join crosses the face, adding a line to its otherwise rounded form. Paper fills much of the left side, where the creases catch light at different angles. Below and beside the head, slender vessels, stacked dishes and a small grid-patterned object introduce quieter shapes. Their scale makes the head appear larger, while the dark margins keep the composition enclosed.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white to concentrate on how the light separates these surfaces. The glossy highlights have a very different character from the softer tones in the paper. As I look at the photograph, my eye moves from the face toward the lower details, then returns to the profile. I wanted to preserve that uneven balance between an immediately recognizable subject and a setting that takes longer to read. The heavy coat creates a broad, textured shape around his shoulders. Within that frame, his eyes, moustache and narrow beard remain sharply defined. I kept the crop close enough that the clothing enters at both sides, leaving very little to distract from the face. The zippered layer underneath adds a quieter surface among the longer strands of fur.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white helped me bring these details into balance. The lighter fur catches the eye first, but the darker lines around his eyes and the shape of his beard draw attention back toward his expression. I remember the closeness of this encounter more than any single detail of the camp. There was time to look carefully, and he was willing to be photographed. In black and white, the worn wood and the folds of the coat have enough texture to support the portrait without competing with it. The framing also preserves his stance rather than reducing the image to a face alone. What stays with me is the straightforward meeting of his gaze and my camera. The brightest areas guide the eye upward, and the darker drape beside her face gives it a clear edge. I wanted the photograph to keep the closeness of the encounter without losing those surrounding details. When I return to it, the direct gaze still comes first, followed by the quieter textures and the shape of her seated figure. Its clear eyes, hands and surrounding textures make a detailed environmental portrait for your wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI encountered this worker while walking through a row of shops in southern India. Sacks of flour and grain were stacked behind him, and dust hung in the working space. He was adjusting the scarf over his nose and mouth when I made the photograph. His hands on either side of the fabric and his eyes above its edge became the centre of the picture, giving a brief gesture a clear and immediate shape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe scarf conceals much of his face, but it leaves the lines around his eyes visible. Light picks out the fingers, the folds in the cloth, and strands of hair above his forehead. Behind him, the sacks fill the frame with broad, soft curves and dark stripes. Their larger shapes contrast with the finer detail in his hands and shirt. I kept the environment close around him because it tells us something concrete about the setting without pulling attention away from that moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn black and white, the woven fabric, patterned shirt, and skin remain distinct even though they share a narrow range of tones. The darker space above the sacks gives his face a little separation from the background. I was passing through rather than arranging a portrait session, and the photograph records an action already underway when I arrived.
