At first the scene seems overwhelmingly blue, but the closer I looked, the more colors began to emerge. Violet and faded red remain in the door. Pale markings and scratched graffiti wander across the wall. Stains run vertically through the surface, while patches of old paint reveal layer after layer underneath.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThen there is that tiny plant growing directly beneath the doorway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI love details like that. Against this massive, scarred surface, a few green leaves introduce something alive and temporary. The door itself feels almost absorbed into the wall, as though both have been aging together for decades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene straight on because I wanted very little interpretation between me and what I had found. The wall becomes the composition. Texture, color, scratches, stains and imperfections become the subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is one of the reasons I enjoy photographing India so much. Extraordinary photographs don't always announce themselves. Roofs, chimneys, trees, narrow gaps between houses, and the steep hillside all crowd into the frame, creating the feeling of a city built in layers over a long period of time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe subdued light is important here. There is no dramatic sunset and no bright blue sky competing with the architecture. Instead, the muted atmosphere lets the warm roof tiles, dark stone, and soft greens of the hillside settle into one restrained palette. The clock face and tower become natural points of focus without needing to be exaggerated.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Black Church is one of Brasov’s defining landmarks, but I wanted the photograph to show more than the building alone. By keeping the surrounding rooftops and mountain in the composition, I could place it within the city rather than separate it from the place that gives it context. Chimneys break through steep tiled roofs. Domes and ornate façades appear between simpler buildings. Farther back, the skyline rises above the city, giving the photograph a natural destination without overwhelming everything happening below.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt particularly suited to this view. Without color separating the buildings, the shapes, rooflines, windows, masonry, and repeating patterns become much more apparent. The city turns into an intricate arrangement of light and dark, with hundreds of small details packed into a single scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the density. There is very little empty space here. One building overlaps the next, then another, creating a visual record of a city that feels as though it has been assembled gradually rather than planned as one uniform whole. Even the cloudy sky seems to press downward, concentrating attention on the architecture.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFrom a distance Prague can be defined by its great landmarks. The lower part of the photograph is busy with awnings, signs, a streetlamp, a parked scooter, and the practical details of everyday city life. Above that, everything becomes more ordered. Rows of windows repeat across several buildings, while the roofline steps gradually higher before disappearing into a pale sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe contrast between the facades is what makes the photograph work for me. Some are restrained and almost severe. Others carry ornamental plasterwork, soft colour, and more traditional proportions. A darker, more contemporary building interrupts the sequence without breaking it. Together they create a layered streetscape rather than a single architectural subject.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am often drawn to buildings this way—not because one structure is spectacular, but because several ordinary facades begin to form a larger composition. Here, the repetition, subtle differences, muted colour palette, and upward sweep of the street created the photograph. A deep blue sky hangs over the buildings while streetlights trace both banks of the Liffey. The river becomes the centre of everything, gathering those lights and pulling them downward into elongated reflections.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the symmetry without everything being perfectly symmetrical. Buildings line both sides of the water, bridges draw the eye toward the centre, and the river creates a strong visual path through the city. Yet every reflection behaves differently. Some are narrow and precise; others dissolve into broad strokes of light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe quietness of the scene matters to me as much as the colour. Dublin is a busy city, but at this hour it feels unusually still. The architecture remains present without overwhelming the river, while the saturated blue overhead gives the warmer lights along the streets an almost theatrical contrast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always liked photographing cities when their familiar character changes for a few minutes. Here, the River Liffey is not simply running through Dublin. Rather than concentrating only on the immense scale of the Wall itself, I was drawn toward this smaller architectural detail. The broad red frame, repeated rectangular windows and tightly divided panes create an almost rigid geometry, yet every section of wood carries evidence of weathering and use.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what holds the photograph together for me. The structure is orderly. The surface is not.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAcross the doors, red paint has worn into rusty orange, brown and pale exposed wood. Some window panels remain dark while others appear almost white, breaking the repetition just enough to keep the pattern from becoming too perfect. At the centre, the small lock and metal hardware become an understated focal point amid all those larger rectangles.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always found doors photographically intriguing because they are both architectural objects and boundaries. They suggest another space without revealing very much about it. The sun was already pushing through the mist, but instead of clearing it immediately, the light spread softly across the sky and water. Trees along both banks became dark silhouettes, while a distant bridge appeared almost weightless in the centre of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe water was remarkably calm. Only small ripples disturbed the surface, catching fragments of warm light beneath the brighter sky. From the boat, there was very little sense of movement beyond the quiet lapping of water. The usual detail of the landscape had disappeared into the mist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted the photograph to preserve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRather than emphasizing the bridge or shoreline, I allowed the atmosphere to dominate. The darker trees frame the scene naturally, guiding the eye toward the opening in the distance, while the warm reflection on the water balances the bright morning light above.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFlorida is often photographed for colour, beaches and intense sunlight. This was something much quieter. The first arch is massive and heavy, filling most of the frame, yet every opening beyond it becomes progressively smaller. The eye has nowhere else to go. It is pulled straight through the architecture toward the centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition deliberately precise because the geometry was already doing everything I needed. Curved brickwork sits against straight vertical walls, irregular handmade surfaces against an almost mathematical sequence of arches. Even the pale floor becomes part of the perspective, narrowing as it travels deeper into Fort Jefferson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe colour was equally important. Warm browns, reds and muted ochres reveal the variation in the old brickwork rather than reducing it to a single tone. Light entering the corridor catches certain surfaces while others fall into shadow, giving each successive arch its own subtle separation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI often photograph architecture for exactly this reason. A structure can become something entirely different when I stop looking at the whole building and concentrate on one repeating element. Most of the landscape has been stripped away, leaving the house and trees suspended between water and fog. Their reflections are imperfect and elongated, just strong enough to connect the shoreline to the darker foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMornings like this are one reason I like being out with a camera before the landscape fully wakes. Fog changes familiar places quickly. Details vanish, distances become difficult to judge, and ordinary subjects can take on an entirely different presence.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me here was that sense of quiet uncertainty. The photograph does not reveal very much, yet it gives the eye room to wander through the mist. That was what made me stop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was walking along the river in Chengdu just after dusk when the lights of Anshun Bridge came on and suddenly the entire structure appeared twice—once above the water and again in an unusually clear reflection below it. I had not planned the photograph or scouted the location. The scene simply came together in front of me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat fascinated me was the contrast. The bridge glows in warm amber light, its traditional Chinese rooflines and sweeping arches standing against modern high-rise buildings and the deep blue evening sky. Below, the calm water turns the arches into complete circles, creating a strong geometric rhythm across the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI kept the composition straightforward because there was very little I wanted to interfere with. The bridge already carried the photograph. Its reflection added symmetry, while the surrounding towers introduced a second layer—the contemporary city rising behind architecture that speaks to a much older visual tradition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI made the photograph in 2015, and what stays with me is how briefly everything aligned. Water this calm does not remain that way for long. A breeze, passing boat or changing light could have broken the reflection completely.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a few minutes, though, Chengdu seemed to pause. He stands almost in silhouette, surrounded by objects, handwritten details and accumulated pieces of the bar’s personality. Above him, the currency creates a dense, irregular canopy that seems to press down into the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for this photograph. It reduces all that visual clutter into light, shadow, texture and shape. The refrigerator glows on one side, a table lamp burns brightly on the other, and the darker centre of the room holds the bartender between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most about places like this is how much character can collect in a relatively small space. Nothing feels designed for a photograph. The bottles, old automotive pieces, hanging money and worn counter have simply accumulated into something distinctive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to keep. The salon is painted in soft pink, cream and yellow, with bright magenta and green stripes running across the front. Next door, turquoise trim and faded peach walls add another layer of Southwestern character. All of it sits beneath an enormous, intensely blue Arizona sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep the wider street scene rather than isolate a single sign or detail. The empty road, chain-link fence, old vehicles, weathered signage and trees behind the buildings help place the salon within the slightly improvised visual language of historic Route 66.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what has always interested me about this highway. The attraction is not one particular landmark. It is the accumulation of diners, garages, motels, old cars, handmade signs and businesses that developed their own personalities to catch the attention of passing travellers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDeSoto's Salon had that personality in abundance. Each facade seems to belong to a slightly different architectural language—dark, heavily ornamented masonry on the left, a domed structure rising through the centre, and the lighter, more decorative building facing it from across the square.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep that entire relationship in the frame rather than concentrate on a single building. The broad paving in the foreground creates distance, allowing the architecture to unfold gradually as the eye moves deeper into the scene. Bicycles line one side, cars occupy the narrow passage ahead, and a few people cross the square, giving just enough scale to understand the size of the surrounding structures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast sky suited the scene. Its soft light reveals the stonework without harsh shadows, while the subdued colour keeps attention on the elaborate facades, windows, domes and sculptural details.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI am often more interested in the spaces between important buildings than in photographing landmarks individually. A square like this shows how architecture functions together—how different structures, streets and public spaces accumulate into the character of an old European city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that layering is what makes the photograph interesting. There is no single subject demanding attention. Below, the modern city remains visible in layers of rooftops, windows and scattered lights, giving the mosque both scale and context.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was that relationship between the monumental and the everyday. The mosque dominates the skyline, yet it is still embedded within the dense fabric of Istanbul rather than standing apart from it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDusk is often when a city changes character most quickly. Details disappear, artificial lights begin to define the architecture, and familiar buildings take on a completely different weight.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat transition is what I wanted to hold onto here. Its warm facade immediately separates it from the quieter stone buildings around it, and that same colour returns in the water beneath. Bare trees weave through the architecture, pedestrians move along the promenade, and dozens of modest boats create an irregular line between the city and the harbor.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to keep all of those layers together. Moving closer to the architecture would have lost the boats; concentrating on the marina would have removed the character of Rijeka behind it. From this viewpoint, both belong to the same photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me about port cities is that their relationship with the water is visible everywhere. Streets, buildings, boats and daily life all meet at the shoreline.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHere, the reflections complete that connection. The architecture does not simply stop at the harbor's edge—it continues downward into the water, broken into long streaks of yellow, gray, blue and red.
