Culture Wall Art

Culture wall art is about the marks people leave—rituals, symbols, architecture, music, and daily life that give identity to a place. In this fine art collection, I’ve chosen photographs that highlight the richness of human expression: the curve of a temple roof, the rhythm of a street festival, the quiet dignity of tradition, or the energy of modern gatherings. Each piece of wall art reflects a story of heritage and connection, showing how culture is both shared and distinct. Culture wall art doesn’t just decorate; it communicates depth, reminding us that art grows out of lived experience. For me, these images hold onto the authenticity of people and places, creating fine art that adds meaning, colour, and narrative presence to your home.

A Rare Moment When Times Square Slowed Down

Times Square isn't supposed to look like this.

I made this photograph in the summer of 2009, when New York City had placed inexpensive lawn chairs directly on the street and opened part of Times Square to pedestrians. Even the New York Police Department station is buried within the visual chaos.

I like photographs where there isn't necessarily one person who is the subject. What holds my attention is the relationship between the Black Church and everything surrounding it. The building is monumental, but it is not isolated. There is no dramatic sunset and no bright blue sky competing with the architecture. The clock face and tower become natural points of focus without needing to be exaggerated.

The Black Church is one of Brasov’s defining landmarks, but I wanted the photograph to show more than the building alone. The Rock draws the attention, yet just beyond it sits this extraordinary ruin in the open countryside, quieter and far less imposing in the way it announces itself.

The photograph is built around that sense of isolation. A wide field separates me from the structure, while the empty sky gives the abbey room to stand almost as a piece of sculpture. The surviving walls still reveal the shape of the original Gothic church, but sections have collapsed into irregular stone forms. In black and white, those textures become more pronounced: weathered blocks, dark openings, broken rooflines, and the soft grass surrounding them.

Hore Abbey began as a Benedictine monastery before passing to the Cistercians in the 13th century, becoming the last pre-Reformation Cistercian foundation in Ireland. The lower part of the photograph is busy with awnings, signs, a streetlamp, a parked scooter, and the practical details of everyday city life. Above that, everything becomes more ordered. Rows of windows repeat across several buildings, while the roofline steps gradually higher before disappearing into a pale sky.

The contrast between the facades is what makes the photograph work for me. Some are restrained and almost severe. Others carry ornamental plasterwork, soft colour, and more traditional proportions. A darker, more contemporary building interrupts the sequence without breaking it. Together they create a layered streetscape rather than a single architectural subject.

I am often drawn to buildings this way—not because one structure is spectacular, but because several ordinary facades begin to form a larger composition. Here, the repetition, subtle differences, muted colour palette, and upward sweep of the street created the photograph. Without it, the frame would have been almost entirely about architecture and surface. That contrast interested me: an elaborate Art Deco door beside something as familiar and practical as a bicycle.

I chose black and white because colour would have competed with the extraordinary amount of detail. In monochrome, the eye moves more easily between the rough metal, the arrows, the round porthole-like windows, the stickers, the brickwork and the bicycle wheels. Repetition begins to take over. Their scale immediately changes the character of the neighbourhood around them.

I wanted to photograph both murals together rather than isolate either one. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. The front elevation already had everything I needed.

Years of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. These ordinary vehicles, with their visible wear and practical forms, provide a quieter view of Beijing. The colour is restrained enough for the turquoise to stand out, while the rust and grey masonry reward a closer look.
