That contrast is what stopped me. In Dresden, I watched the train move past the platform and wanted the photograph to hold onto the feeling of motion rather than freeze it into perfect detail.

The train dominates the composition as a series of horizontal red, white, and metallic bands. Its windows dissolve into a soft blur, yet the roof structure above remains sharp enough to give the image a rigid framework. I like that collision of movement and geometry. The ceiling grid, vertical supports, and platform edge create an ordered architectural setting, while the train seems to tear straight through it.

There is also something almost abstract about the photograph. The stairs are rigid, functional and repetitive; everything around them is wearing away. Paint has peeled from the brickwork. Dark streaks run down the steps. Patches of warm brown, grey, faded white and ochre shift across the walls, revealing layer after layer of use and exposure. Even the vertical column near the centre seems to separate two different histories of the same interior.

I have always been drawn to abandoned industrial spaces because they are full of compositions that were never designed to be photographs. Nothing here was arranged for appearance. The staircase existed simply to move people from one level to another, yet once the factory fell silent, its shape became the dominant visual element. The strong diagonal gives the scene movement, while the worn brick and stained surfaces slow the eye down and reward a closer look.

I made this photograph in 2008. The fractures, ledges, stains, and mineral colour seem to break the painted marks apart, so the human gestures become part of the surface rather than a separate layer. Some words are still legible; others have faded into fragments. From a distance, the whole wall begins to work almost like an abstract composition.

That tension is what made the photograph interesting to me. Rock suggests permanence. Route 501 Long Branch is visible across the destination sign, along with streetcar number 4214, giving the photograph a very specific Toronto identity. The streetcar doors, windows, mirrors and front lights remain strong enough to hold the eye, while the streetscape rushes outward toward the edges of the frame. It is pulled straight through the architecture toward the centre.

I kept the composition deliberately precise because the geometry was already doing everything I needed. Warm browns, reds and muted ochres reveal the variation in the old brickwork rather than reducing it to a single tone. From this elevated viewpoint, the entire sequence becomes visible at once—a series of tight curves cutting a dark ribbon through the surrounding fields and trees.

Black and white changed the scene considerably. That distance matters to me. It leaves room for the road, neighbouring buildings and dark outlines of trees, placing the amphitheatre within the city that surrounds it. The repeated arches supply a steady pattern against the less predictable lines of passing traffic.

A long exposure turns that movement into bands of light. Individual vehicles become less important than the paths they trace, and the road takes on a brightness that the surrounding streetscape doesn’t share. In this black and white photograph from Havana, Cuba, massive fluted columns recede along an ornate facade, carrying the eye through carved capitals, arched entrances and deep ironwork. Light catches the projecting surfaces while the recesses hold darker tones. That separation lets the ornament remain legible without flattening it into a pattern.

I like the tension between the curved section and the straighter lines below it. The low viewpoint brings them together in a way a frontal view would not. A narrow area of dark sky leaves the highest stone edge distinct, giving the pale architecture room to stand out.

For me, architectural photography often begins with a detail that changes how I see the larger building. Here, the close framing makes the Athenaeum’s carved surfaces and changing angles the subject in their own right. As wall art, it can suit someone drawn to Romanian architecture, classical ornament or monochrome photography. The neutral palette keeps attention on the craft and geometry, offering a structured image that reveals more as the eye moves through its layers.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2011

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Romanian-Athenaeum-Architectural-Detail-Black-and-White-Photography-1.jpg?v=1792187937
luxor-and-mandalay-bay-hotels-las-vegas
Las Vegas Luxor Glass Reflections Colour Photography

Palm Trees and Mandalay Bay Reflected in Blue Glass

The palm trees appear to lean across a blue surface, their dark reflections crossing the glass-panel lines. Small touches of brown remain within the otherwise pale winter scene.

The wet snow clings closely to the branches, making even the slenderest lines visible. Darker trunks stand at different distances, with the nearer trees retaining clear bark texture. Farther into the forest, their shapes fade into a softer grey background. The mist gives the woodland depth while keeping the overall mood gentle and quiet.

I was drawn to the way the snowfall changed the structure of this familiar landscape. A dense network of branches becomes easier to follow when each one carries a white edge. Thin saplings cross in front of larger trunks, and a few remaining leaves provide small reminders of the season that has just passed. There is no single tree demanding attention; the pattern belongs to the forest as a whole.

This image captures an early meeting of autumn and winter rather than a deep midwinter scene. Without the deck, bow, or wider harbour, the ship becomes a surface to look at rather than an object to identify. This is a beach view shaped by restraint: a few rocks, a soft line of surf, and distance that grows less distinct the farther you follow it.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2009

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Marthas-Vineyard-Misty-Beach-Black-and-White-Photography-1.jpg?v=1791990244
old-commercial-ship-anchor-against-the-bright-red-hull
Rusted Anchor on a Bright Red Ship Hull | Nautical Photography

Weathered Metal and Sharp Shadows Across Red Steel

The anchor is heavy, but its shadow makes it look larger still. Against the bright red hull of this commercial ship, rusted metal and dark diagonal lines form a striking arrangement. I was drawn to the way direct sunlight turned a practical piece of ship equipment into a graphic subject.

The anchor sits to the right of centre, leaving a broad area of red around it. Its curved arms catch warm light along their worn edges, while the recessed parts remain darker. The shadow falls downward and to the left, repeating the form in a flatter, more elongated shape. That second outline is as important to the composition as the anchor itself.

Across the hull, seams divide the painted surface into quieter sections. Narrow shadows cut diagonally through those panels, introducing lines that differ from the anchor’s rounded form. I kept these marks within the frame because they give the large field of colour structure without filling it with competing objects.

What began as a dockside detail becomes a study of opposing surfaces: rough rust against painted steel, warm highlights against deep shadow, a compact object against open colour. The ship remains recognisable through the anchor and hull, yet the photograph also has the simplicity of an abstract. Dark channels branch through pale ground, meeting a band of ochre and olive land along the upper edge. I photographed the scene from above, drawn to a coastal pattern that reads almost like a drawing while remaining firmly rooted in the landscape.

One larger channel runs down through the centre, with smaller branches spreading to either side. The aerial viewpoint makes their connections visible in a way that would be difficult to grasp from the ground. There is no horizon here; the image asks the eye to move across a surface rather than look toward a distant view.

The muted colors give those lines room to stand out. Pale grey and sandy tones occupy most of the photograph, while the warmer strip of land anchors the top. Subtle changes in the ground's texture add depth around the channels without overwhelming their branching shapes.

I like the shift that happens as I look at this image. At first, it can feel like an abstract arrangement of marks and color. Then the channels reveal the coast beneath them, and the scale begins to grow. That movement between detail and landscape is why I kept the composition so close.

For a collector interested in natural patterns or aerial photography, this view offers both.
