Light, water, mist, and a few distant shapes. That simplicity was what caught me here on Florida's Intracoastal Waterway.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was on the water early in the summer of 2009 when the entire scene seemed suspended in haze. The sun was already pushing through the mist, but instead of clearing it immediately, the light spread softly across the sky and water. Trees along both banks became dark silhouettes, while a distant bridge appeared almost weightless in the centre of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe water was remarkably calm. Only small ripples disturbed the surface, catching fragments of warm light beneath the brighter sky. From the boat, there was very little sense of movement beyond the quiet lapping of water. The usual detail of the landscape had disappeared into the mist.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted the photograph to preserve.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRather than emphasizing the bridge or shoreline, I allowed the atmosphere to dominate. The darker trees frame the scene naturally, guiding the eye toward the opening in the distance, while the warm reflection on the water balances the bright morning light above.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFlorida is often photographed for colour, beaches and intense sunlight. This was something much quieter. Two maple leaf emblems sit high on the gables, subtle but unmistakably Canadian. Signs advertising fishing rod rentals and departure times add another layer, revealing that these simple structures remain practical places rather than merely picturesque buildings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI also liked the irregularity of the row. The sheds overlap and step backward from one another, each slightly different in size and proportion. Utility poles and overhead wires interrupt the clean geometry, while the wet pavement and subdued sky give the scene the quiet atmosphere of a damp Maritime day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is nothing grand about these buildings, and that is precisely why I stopped. Across the narrow harbour channel, grey wooden sheds stand on pilings above the water. Behind them, exposed granite rises into a scatter of homes, utility poles and simple buildings that seem to follow the contours of the shoreline rather than fight them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe overcast sky was important to the photograph. It softened the light and took away the bright, postcard-like quality the scene might have had, leaving the textures and muted colours to carry the image. I especially like the contrast between the smooth water, the hard granite and the weathered wood. Nothing is overly polished. It feels practical, lived in and closely connected to the sea.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that is what makes this view of Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia, interesting. It is not one isolated subject but a broader portrait of a coastal fishing community, where boats, sheds, houses and shoreline all belong to the same landscape. Pulling back gave the temple room among the surrounding buildings instead of isolating it as a single monument. Its rounded dome and upright columns stand clearly above the treeline, but the smaller structures along the shore contribute their own rhythm of roofs, windows and shaded walls.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the foreground, a series of markers breaks up the rippled surface of the lagoon. Their spacing leads the eye across the water toward the shore, creating a quieter counterpoint to the detail in the architecture. The grey sky gives the dome a simple backdrop and leaves the waterfront as the busiest part of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings those relationships forward. I’m interested in the contrast between the temple’s ordered form and the softer textures of foliage and water, and in how much breathing room this view allows. The second boat sits farther back, repeating the same broad colours at a smaller scale. Windows, railings and wheelhouses add detail, but the first impression remains simple: white and yellow boats against clear blue water and sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like how the reflection changes the ordered shapes. The hulls and decks are firm above the surface, while below them the lines bend and stretch with small ripples. That gentle movement gives the otherwise still scene a different rhythm.
