A deep blue sky hangs over the buildings while streetlights trace both banks of the Liffey. The river becomes the centre of everything, gathering those lights and pulling them downward into elongated reflections.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the symmetry without everything being perfectly symmetrical. Buildings line both sides of the water, bridges draw the eye toward the centre, and the river creates a strong visual path through the city. Yet every reflection behaves differently. Some are narrow and precise; others dissolve into broad strokes of light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe quietness of the scene matters to me as much as the colour. Dublin is a busy city, but at this hour it feels unusually still. The architecture remains present without overwhelming the river, while the saturated blue overhead gives the warmer lights along the streets an almost theatrical contrast.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always liked photographing cities when their familiar character changes for a few minutes. Here, the River Liffey is not simply running through Dublin. The bridge begins high above me, cuts diagonally across the photograph and stretches toward the Sydney skyline on the opposite side of the harbour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis was 2016, during blue hour, when the city lights were beginning to appear but there was still enough colour left in the sky. Deep blue fills most of the frame, while the last sunset light burns orange, pink and violet along the horizon. Beneath it, Sydney Harbour settles into cooler tones and the illuminated buildings on the left begin to define the city after dark.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me most was the contrast in scale. The skyline appears relatively small beneath the immense lattice of steel overhead. Individual lights along the bridge create tiny points of warmth within the dark structure, while the open sky on the left gives all that weight somewhere to breathe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSydney Harbour Bridge is one of those landmarks that has been photographed countless times, so I was less interested in simply recording what it looked like. I wanted to find a viewpoint where its engineering, mass and geometry became the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, the sunset completed it. The date matters here. New York's skyline has changed considerably since then, making this not only a cityscape but a record of Manhattan at a particular moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to the compression of buildings along the waterfront. Towers of different heights and periods rise almost shoulder to shoulder, creating a dense rhythm of windows, vertical lines and architectural shapes. Construction cranes appear among them, another reminder that New York is rarely finished.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe river gives the photograph room to breathe. Its broad horizontal surface separates me from the city while the skyline forms a solid band beneath the enormous sky. Above it, the clouds become darker and more complicated, pressing down visually on the buildings and giving the scene a weight that would disappear on a clear day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white was an obvious choice for me. Colour would have added information I did not need. In monochrome, the photograph becomes about structure, weather, scale and the subtle tonal differences between stone, glass, water and cloud.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have photographed New York many times, but the city is never quite the same twice. Buildings rise, skylines change and familiar views slowly become historical. A solitary home sits low on the horizon, accompanied by only a few small structures, while open land stretches across the frame beneath an enormous sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat imbalance of scale is what interested me. The house occupies only a tiny portion of the photograph. Everything else is distance, scrubland and clouds. Rather than moving closer, I deliberately allowed the landscape to overwhelm the human presence within it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white strengthened that relationship. Without colour, the scene becomes quieter and more elemental. The pale ground, dark vegetation and small geometric buildings sit beneath layer after layer of clouds, some soft and distant, others heavy enough to dominate the upper half of the image.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eArizona is often photographed through dramatic rock formations and intense desert colour, but this scene offered something very different. It was sparse. Almost empty.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have always been attracted to landscapes where scale can be felt immediately, and this was one of those places. Rather than isolating the landmark, I wanted the wider city around it—the river, towers, domes, rooftops and a small boat moving through the foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white gave the scene the weight I was looking for. The stone arches of Charles Bridge stretch horizontally across the river while the darker towers and architectural details rise behind them. Above, layers of cloud dominate nearly half the photograph, shifting from soft gray to deep charcoal and giving the city an atmosphere that a clear sky simply would not have produced.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe river creates a quieter counterpoint. Its textured surface reflects fragments of light while the small boat provides scale and breaks the stillness of the broad foreground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePrague is filled with architecture that invites closer photographs, but sometimes stepping back reveals more. From this viewpoint, Charles Bridge becomes part of a larger rhythm—the bridge crossing the Vltava, the Old Town rising behind it and the dramatic sky pressing down over everything.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor me, that combination is what makes the photograph. The rounded roof, open window spaces and remaining panels hold together as a single subject, while fallen bodywork sits lower in the foreground. There is very little shine left. Instead, the surface carries orange, brown and darker patches that give each section a different texture.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the contrast between the truck’s weight and the openness above it. The ground is pale and rough, the surrounding vegetation dry, and the sky offers a cooler colour that keeps the rust from dominating everything. The composition lets the vehicle remain firmly part of the landscape rather than isolating it as a museum object.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI do not know the truck’s working history, and the photograph leaves that story open. What I wanted to hold onto was the encounter itself: an old machine still visibly present in a place where weather and time have changed it. What still holds my attention is the layering. The boardwalk pulls forward from the bottom edge, the railing follows the river, and the bridge cuts across the frame on a long diagonal before reaching the far tower. The skyline is present, but it never overwhelms the bridge. Everything seems to lead somewhere.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt natural for a scene built so heavily around stone, steel, wood, water and sky. Without colour competing for attention, the suspension cables become almost a drawing across the upper half of the image. The bridge tower feels heavier, the benches more graphic, and the soft water provides a quieter counterpoint to all that structure.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNew York is usually photographed through movement and density. Here, what interests me is the opposite. The boardwalk is open, the benches are empty, and the city across the East River feels slightly removed. Farther out, they gather into a smaller repeating pattern, drawing the eye toward the end of the pier. Above them, the deck and railings sweep in from the upper right. That perspective makes the structure feel close enough to stand beside, while still carrying the view out to sea.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI remember the sand underfoot and the rhythm of the waves at that early hour. That shape echoes the low ridge beyond it and the long bands of cloud above. Within the trailer itself, the lines are much less settled: upright supports, buckled siding, and pieces leaning against the end give the eye a more irregular route through the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe ground in front is open and rough, with small stones and sparse growth. It creates some distance between the camera and the trailer, so the structure can be seen as a whole. Trees and darker vegetation gather farther back, separating the pale roof from parts of the hillside.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIn monochrome, the condition of the surfaces becomes especially clear.
