I photographed the medieval stone complex in black and white beneath a broad overcast sky, letting its broken walls, central tower, arches, and rough masonry carry the image.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy wife and I came across the abbey while travelling through Ireland in 2019, only about a 15-minute walk from the much better-known Rock of Cashel. That contrast stayed with me. The Rock draws the attention, yet just beyond it sits this extraordinary ruin in the open countryside, quieter and far less imposing in the way it announces itself.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is built around that sense of isolation. A wide field separates me from the structure, while the empty sky gives the abbey room to stand almost as a piece of sculpture. The surviving walls still reveal the shape of the original Gothic church, but sections have collapsed into irregular stone forms. In black and white, those textures become more pronounced: weathered blocks, dark openings, broken rooflines, and the soft grass surrounding them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHore Abbey began as a Benedictine monastery before passing to the Cistercians in the 13th century, becoming the last pre-Reformation Cistercian foundation in Ireland. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. I wanted to photograph it directly, without trying to dramatize the structure through an unusual angle. The front elevation already had everything I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. The small outbuilding beside it and the dry, treeless landscape keep the church firmly connected to the rough environment around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBodie is filled with structures that make the California Gold Rush era feel unusually tangible. Buildings remain standing where people once lived, worked and gathered, yet the activity that gave them purpose has disappeared.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contrast has always interested me. Here, the church still looks capable of welcoming a congregation, but the streets around it belong to a town preserved from another time. Its rounded dome and upright columns stand clearly above the treeline, but the smaller structures along the shore contribute their own rhythm of roofs, windows and shaded walls.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn the foreground, a series of markers breaks up the rippled surface of the lagoon. Their spacing leads the eye across the water toward the shore, creating a quieter counterpoint to the detail in the architecture. The grey sky gives the dome a simple backdrop and leaves the waterfront as the busiest part of the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white brings those relationships forward. I framed the building from the graveyard, bringing a row of differently shaped headstones into the foreground. Dark foliage gives weight to the left side, while clouds leave more open space around the tower. In monochrome, the texture of the stones, the mass of ivy and the markings on the headstones become parts of the same tonal landscape.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI found the meeting of ruin and growth compelling here. The church remains recognizable, but its edges soften where plants take over. Rather than assigning stories to the people commemorated in the graveyard, I wanted to show the place as I encountered it. I like how the photograph offers those different scales of looking: the whole façade first, then the finer patterns within the window and doorway. The black and white treatment makes the pale stone and darker glass distinct without separating them from the rest of the building.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI left some of the setting around the chapel. A large tree occupies the left side, neighbouring buildings appear to the right, and a broad lawn lies in front. Their lower shapes allow the towers to remain prominent, while the clouds keep the sky from becoming an empty backdrop. Looking at the finished photograph, my attention returns to the balance between the two towers and the single large window. The pale bases carry cracks, darker marks and worn patches. Above them, narrow grooves repeat along the columns, with stronger shadows gathering around the recessed entrance. Large arched windows carry fine grids of glazing, while round openings appear higher up. Pale stone is interrupted by darker blocks, creating a visible pattern across the walls. The central clock and the smaller upper features give the eye several stopping points as it moves toward the lantern at the top.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI like the balance between the building’s substantial form and its more delicate carved edges. Projecting cornices cast narrow shadows, helping separate each level of the facade. The side towers sit below the main dome and keep its height in perspective. The light picks out those different heights rather than giving the entire facade the same brightness.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eTo the right, the museum building has a broader, more horizontal shape. Its row of rounded windows provides another rhythm beside the church’s pointed forms. Between them, narrower facades bring a finer scale of detail into the frame. I wanted to keep that group of buildings intact because the church feels more substantial when it is seen in its setting.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe paving gives the photograph a quieter foreground. A patterned section crosses the lower part of the square, with small reflections gathering near the lamps. I found myself noticing more as I stayed there: the change between lit and unlit windows, the outlines against the sky, and the space around the buildings. I chose a close view of the architecture, with a broad arch crossing above a row of pointed openings. In black and white, the bright glass, dark columns, and patterned masonry make a detailed study of the church interior.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eA large pier occupies the left side of the photograph, its surface divided into small blocks, darker patches, and bands of carved ornament. Beyond it, slender columns separate the windows and carry the eye upward to their pointed tops. The window grids repeat within those larger shapes, creating smaller patterns inside the sweep of the arches. I liked the way the composition moved from heavy masonry close to me toward the lighter openings farther across the space.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI gave myself time to look before settling on this fragment of the interior. The available light revealed differences across the walls and carvings while leaving enough shadow to keep the forms distinct. Including only part of the church let me concentrate on those relationships without losing them in a wider view. The photograph holds a sense of height, yet its interest also lies in the small changes from one column, window, and stone surface to the next. I photographed the tower, adjoining rooflines, and weathered exterior in monochrome, leaving room for the clouds and the tall tree beside the building. The church's altered geometry gives this architectural view its particular character.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe tower stands near the centre, with pointed louvred openings, signs on two faces, and a steep roof above them. To the left, the main church roof slopes toward a boarded Gothic window. Changes in siding, shingles, and timber make the surfaces varied even within the restrained tones of the photograph. The smaller building on the right continues the group, while the tree lifts a softer shape above its roof.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBuilt in 1901, the church belongs to Dawson's transition from the Gold Rush years toward a more permanent community. Ground movement later affected its structure, and bracing has helped stabilize the building. That history gave me another reason to look closely at what remained in front of my camera. I wanted the photograph to hold both the recognizable form of a church and the irregularities visible within it. The wider view keeps those details in their setting, with the road below and changing cloud tones above. Overhead, the exposed roof timbers repeat that movement at a different scale, gathering toward the centre of the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eStanding in the nave, I was drawn to the balance of height and proportion rather than a single decorative feature. I kept the floor in the frame because it gives a route through the interior before the eye moves up to the glass and beams. Soft light preserves the texture of the masonry and the small differences between the wooden surfaces. These everyday elements place the ornate structure within a church that is still being used.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eStanding inside the building, I was interested in how much could be suggested by a door left partly open. I chose a close view so that the repeating carving and the change in angle would remain easy to follow. The light catches a few edges of the timber but leaves the deeper tones intact, giving the photograph a quiet, enclosed feeling. I made this image during my time in Rye in 2025.
