Instead of everyone rushing through one of the busiest places in Manhattan, people simply sat down.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat contradiction is what caught my attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe photograph is crowded, but it doesn't feel frantic. People lounge in folding chairs, talk, watch the street or simply sit by themselves. Behind them is unmistakable Times Square—yellow taxis, pedestrians, construction equipment, traffic lights, towering buildings and an almost absurd concentration of signs and advertising. Even the New York Police Department station is buried within the visual chaos.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI like photographs where there isn't necessarily one person who is the subject. Here, the people collectively become the subject. My eye can wander around the frame and discover dozens of small moments happening simultaneously.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph also has a personal connection for me. Later, during a workshop with legendary New York photographer Jay Maisel, I showed him this image. He stopped on it and commented on the uniqueness of the moment. That stayed with me because uniqueness is exactly what had made me raise my camera in the first place.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTimes Square has been photographed millions of times. Finding a different photograph there is considerably harder.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor a brief period that summer, one of the world's most recognizable symbols of urban movement became somewhere people could simply pull up a chair and do absolutely nothing. They weren't posing for me. One leaned forward with a drink held between his hands while the other sat back against the bench, legs crossed. Both looked directly toward my camera with expressions that were difficult to read—and that ambiguity was exactly what interested me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a lot happening around them. Reflections fill the cafe windows, advertisements hang behind the glass, tables and signs push into the edges of the frame, and another face appears unexpectedly in the reflection at the far right. Dublin is present everywhere, but the two men remain firmly at the center of the photograph.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because this image is really about people, expressions and the visual layers surrounding them. Without color, the dark jackets, brickwork, window reflections and cafe interior begin to work together rather than compete for attention.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eStreet photography often depends on noticing something before the moment changes. There was nothing spectacular happening here. No event. No performance. Just two men sitting outside a cafe in Dublin in 2019.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYet their body language and direct looks give the photograph a tension I couldn't have arranged myself. I still don't know exactly what they were thinking when they noticed me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat's part of why I like the photograph. Tall windows have been patched with mismatched pieces of wood, paint has faded into layers of yellow and green, and laundry hangs openly across the upper floor. Then, at precisely the right moment, a man on a bicycle entered the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat small figure changed the photograph for me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis red shirt immediately separates him from the muted colors of the building, while the bicycle gives movement to an otherwise completely static facade. He is dwarfed by the architecture behind him, yet my eye goes directly to him. Without the cyclist, I would have a photograph about an aging Havana building. With him, it becomes a photograph about life continuing around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI particularly like the contrast between the grandeur the building must once have possessed and the way it is being lived in now. Ornamental columns and decorative details remain, but so do crumbling plaster, boarded windows, exposed masonry and improvised repairs. Laundry hanging above the street makes the building feel inhabited rather than abandoned.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThese are the scenes that keep drawing me back to street photography. I can find the location and recognize the possibilities, but I can't manufacture the moment.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe architecture gave me the setting. Havana gave me the color and texture. Some are crossing quickly, others seem completely unhurried, and one woman walks through the middle of the street carrying an open umbrella.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe people are what make the photograph, but the city surrounding them matters just as much.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTall Manhattan buildings rise tightly along both sides of the street, creating a corridor that pulls my eye deep into New York. Vans, taxis and delivery vehicles crowd the intersection. Streetlights, signs, scaffolding and windows fill nearly every remaining space. There is very little visual quiet anywhere in the frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because it brings all of that complexity together. Clothing, vehicles and architecture stop competing through color, and the photograph becomes about movement, repetition, scale and the extraordinary density of the city.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat I like most is that there isn't one obvious protagonist. My eye keeps moving from person to person, discovering small gestures and separate stories throughout the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is the kind of New York photograph I enjoy making most. No landmark is necessary. I was drawn to the layers immediately—the bartender facing away from me in his cowboy hat, the illuminated drinks cooler, bottles lined across the counter and an old Ford grille mounted against the back wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a lot happening in the frame, yet the bartender gives everything a centre. He stands almost in silhouette, surrounded by objects, handwritten details and accumulated pieces of the bar’s personality. Above him, the currency creates a dense, irregular canopy that seems to press down into the scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white felt right for this photograph. It reduces all that visual clutter into light, shadow, texture and shape. The refrigerator glows on one side, a table lamp burns brightly on the other, and the darker centre of the room holds the bartender between them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interests me most about places like this is how much character can collect in a relatively small space. Nothing feels designed for a photograph. The bottles, old automotive pieces, hanging money and worn counter have simply accumulated into something distinctive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat is what I wanted to keep. A lone pedestrian crosses through the foreground, a white taxi cuts across behind, crowds gather along the sidewalks and the avenue narrows into a dense corridor of traffic and light. Everything overlaps, yet somehow the photograph still holds together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBlack and white changed the scene completely. Without the colour of Times Square competing for attention, the structure of the city becomes much stronger. Buildings, windows, billboards, streetlights and people begin to stack into one complicated urban pattern. The signs are still unmistakably Times Square, but they become shapes and tones rather than a wall of competing colour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLooking at it now, I also like how firmly the photograph belongs to its period. His newspaper, bent posture and shadow make a much quieter pattern, yet they are what I return to when looking at the photograph. The shadow enlarges his presence on the wall and connects his small figure to the space surrounding him. I waited for the light, newspaper and posture to settle into a balanced frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI remember the evening’s heat settling and the brief glow across the building. The colour was strong enough to give the entire facade a warm, golden character, but the recesses stayed dark. That contrast preserves depth within the arcade.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat matters to me is the relationship between everyday life and the setting it inhabits. The man is simply reading, surrounded by architecture marked by time. The foreground is packed with pedestrians standing, walking, talking and waiting. Farther back, the Broadway sign, traffic lights, taxis and storefronts begin to merge into the city itself. Even the statue near the centre seems almost swallowed by the movement around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is no single obvious subject here, and that is exactly what appealed to me. Light catches that surface in pale patches, bringing the foreground towards the viewer and connecting it with the smaller pools of brightness farther along the street. The men stand out against those lighter areas, one slightly ahead of the other. Their clothing and bags give the scene everyday detail, while cars, shop signs and other figures remain part of the surroundings. I photographed the scene in 2011, keeping the street’s depth visible around the people.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat holds the composition together for me is the changing scale of the lamps. The nearest is large and bright, while the others become progressively smaller above the narrowing street. Dark building fronts enclose that line on either side. At ground level, the two men add a different rhythm through their walking postures. I wanted the photograph to keep both qualities in view: the ordered repetition of the lights and the passing human moment beneath them. Its textured surface descends between dark rock walls, while brighter snow spreads across the upper slopes. A steep exposed rock face interrupts the white near the centre. I like the variety within that area: smooth looking snow, broken lines in the ice and the vertical marks of the granite.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eLight reaches parts of the mountains and the nearer ridge, bringing warmer colour to the stone. Below the ice, dense trees form darker diagonal bands down the valley side. Small plants and pale rocks in the foreground connect the hiker’s position to the much more distant mountain surfaces.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept the full height of that relationship in a vertical composition, from the rough ground near the camera to the clouded sky above the peaks. The person remains near the lower edge, looking into the larger scene. The nearest lamp is much brighter than the other details, while the smaller lights repeat farther down the passage. Black and white gives those changes in brightness a clear role in the composition. It also brings out the different textures of the walls, from the rougher stone on the left to the more regular patterned facade on the right.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFor me, the atmosphere comes from that meeting of movement and stillness. People reach toward the birds, look down at them or stand watching the activity nearby. The flock spreads widely through the foreground, with individual pigeons clear along the lower edge and denser groups around the figures. A few wings blur as the birds move, giving the photograph a different texture from the sharper bodies resting on the ground. I find these small simultaneous events rewarding to look at because attention can move from one group to another.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBehind them, the repeating arches and columns offer a much more measured rhythm. Their ordered lines give structure to the upper part of the photograph while the pigeons occupy the paving less predictably. The group identified as Rise and Resist appears among flags, portraits and hand-held messages, with the city’s everyday signage still clearly present behind the marchers.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThat mixture gives the image its particular character. Striped awnings, traffic signals and the West 31st Street sign establish the setting, while raised placards break up the view of the buildings. A marcher strides ahead near the centre, and a broad patterned banner stretches across the right. I like how individual people remain distinct within such a tightly gathered scene.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBlack and white gathers the many visual elements into a strong pattern of dark fabric, pale signs and sunlit faces. The repeated letters compete with the shapes of arms, flags and heads, making the photograph rewarding to explore a little at a time.
