Across this Maine rock face, layers of white, turquoise, purple, and faded markings sit against stone streaked with rust orange, brown, grey, and ochre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was drawn to the way the graffiti does not simply sit on top of the rock. The fractures, ledges, stains, and mineral colour seem to break the painted marks apart, so the human gestures become part of the surface rather than a separate layer. Some words are still legible; others have faded into fragments. From a distance, the whole wall begins to work almost like an abstract composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat tension is what made the photograph interesting to me. Rock suggests permanence. Graffiti is usually fleeting. Here, the two occupy the same space, one weathering slowly while the other is already disappearing into it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI photographed the scene in Maine in 2018, but what matters most to me is the texture and contradiction within the frame. The warm natural colour of the stone dominates, while the scattered graffiti interrupts it just enough to keep the eye moving. I made this photograph after dusk, when the intense Roman daylight had disappeared and the ancient stone was taking on a much darker, quieter character.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI was able to set up my tripod on the terrace of Colosso Metro Cafe in 2010. From that elevated position, the Colosseum sweeps across the right side of the frame, its repeating arches gradually disappearing into shadow. The open sky above it remains remarkably simple, filled with warm amber light that gives the entire scene an almost monochromatic quality.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the contrast between the scale of the structure and the small signs of contemporary Rome surrounding it. People gather near the base, the road crosses the foreground, and buildings rise in the distance, yet the Colosseum still overwhelms everything around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI deliberately allowed the mood to become darker than the familiar sunlit views of Rome. Deep shadows fill the arches, the weathered stone catches the remaining light, and the broad empty sky creates a sense of space around a monument normally surrounded by visual activity.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat was the photograph I wanted—not simply a record of the Roman Colosseum, but a quieter view of it after the day had begun to disappear. Constructed in 1882, the church is one of only two churches built in Bodie and remained in religious use until 1932. I wanted to photograph it directly, without trying to dramatize the structure through an unusual angle. The front elevation already had everything I needed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYears of exposure are visible across the boards. Sun, wind and cold have pulled different shades from the wood, while the double doors, steps and Gothic-inspired windows give the facade a quiet formality. The small outbuilding beside it and the dry, treeless landscape keep the church firmly connected to the rough environment around it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBodie is filled with structures that make the California Gold Rush era feel unusually tangible. Here, the church still looks capable of welcoming a congregation, but the streets around it belong to a town preserved from another time. The mosque dominates the skyline, yet it is still embedded within the dense fabric of Istanbul rather than standing apart from it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDusk is often when a city changes character most quickly. That repetition gives the scene depth without needing an open horizon.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat interested me was the contrast between the solid trees and everything suspended around them. Moss hangs in long, loose strands, crossing the upright trunks and partly veiling the branches behind. Small clusters of orange leaves punctuate the greys and browns, so the colour moves through the image rather than collecting in one spot.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept the view within the grove, allowing the foliage and moss to fill the upper frame. Near the bottom, the smoother water and low mist provide a quieter space. His newspaper, bent posture and shadow make a much quieter pattern, yet they are what I return to when looking at the photograph. The shadow enlarges his presence on the wall and connects his small figure to the space surrounding him. I waited for the light, newspaper and posture to settle into a balanced frame.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI remember the evening’s heat settling and the brief glow across the building. The colour was strong enough to give the entire facade a warm, golden character, but the recesses stayed dark. That contrast preserves depth within the arcade.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWhat matters to me is the relationship between everyday life and the setting it inhabits. The man is simply reading, surrounded by architecture marked by time. In the distance, the mesas become cooler and less distinct, with a faint haze softening their outlines. The sky adds pale gold and grey, giving the upper frame a gentler character than the heavily marked ground below.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eI kept a substantial part of the foreground in the photograph. It provides a close, textured beginning for the view and makes the larger canyon forms feel connected to something tangible.
