Artistic Wall Art

Artistic wall art is about expression beyond the obvious, where photography moves into interpretation and imagination. In this fine art collection, I’ve brought together images that highlight shape, colour, abstraction, and atmosphere—scenes that push past straightforward documentation and invite a more personal response. Artistic wall art works in spaces that call for inspiration and individuality, offering compositions that feel open to interpretation and alive with possibility. From bold contrasts to subtle minimalism, each piece brings a layer of creativity into your home. For me, this collection is about fine art photography as a visual language, where mood and form combine to create wall art that not only decorates but also sparks thought, curiosity, and conversation.

Weathered Shipwreck Reflected in a Golden Lake Ontario Sunrise

I arrived at this Lake Ontario shipwreck early enough to watch the first warm light spread across the water. The lake was almost perfectly still, turning the abandoned ship and its towering masts into a reflection beneath a sky filled with gold, amber and orange.

The ship is La Grande Hermine, but what interested me photographically wasn't simply its name or history. It was the extraordinary contrast between decay and beauty. The hull is weathered and deteriorating, sections of the old vessel have fallen away, and the bare masts and rigging reach into the sky without sails. Yet on this particular morning, the sunrise transformed everything around it.

I positioned myself low and close to the shoreline, allowing the ship to dominate the frame while still leaving room for the glowing sky and open water. Even the surrounding trees seem to frame the wreck, separating its dark, aging structure from the intense light behind it.

There is something fascinating to me about objects that have outlived their original purpose. The structure is still recognizable, yet vines have pushed across the roofline, tall grasses crowd the foreground, and sections of the lower wall have opened enough to expose the dark framework beneath.

I photographed the scene in Ontario and kept the composition vertical so the barn rises out of the tangled vegetation rather than sitting neatly apart from it. That relationship matters to me. The weathered boards, broken edges, leaning lines, and dense growth all compete within the frame, while the open space on the right gives the eye somewhere to move before returning to the building.

Black and white felt right for this photograph because the subject is really about texture and structure. Removing color puts more emphasis on the grain of the wood, the pale grasses, the mass of leaves climbing over the barn, and the deep shadow inside the damaged lower section. Even the heavy cloud cover becomes part of the mood without overwhelming the subject.

What I like most is the tension between something once built for practical use and the landscape gradually reclaiming it. Across this Maine rock face, layers of white, turquoise, purple, and faded markings sit against stone streaked with rust orange, brown, grey, and ochre.

I was drawn to the way the graffiti does not simply sit on top of the rock. The fractures, ledges, stains, and mineral colour seem to break the painted marks apart, so the human gestures become part of the surface rather than a separate layer. Some words are still legible; others have faded into fragments. From a distance, the whole wall begins to work almost like an abstract composition.

That tension is what made the photograph interesting to me. Rock suggests permanence. Without it, the frame would have been almost entirely about architecture and surface. Leaning against the sticker-covered post, it introduces a human scale and a sense of ordinary street life without anyone actually appearing in the scene. That contrast interested me: an elaborate Art Deco door beside something as familiar and practical as a bicycle.

I chose black and white because colour would have competed with the extraordinary amount of detail. In monochrome, the eye moves more easily between the rough metal, the arrows, the round porthole-like windows, the stickers, the brickwork and the bicycle wheels. Repetition begins to take over. Circles answer circles, straight lines run against diagonals, and the bicycle seems almost designed to belong there.

What I like most is that the photograph does not depend on a grand building or a famous landmark. It rises and breaks apart in every direction—steep peaks, dormers, chimneys, overhangs and small decorative details that make the mansion feel almost theatrical. The left side feels compressed and intricate, while the larger gabled section on the right opens up with broader walls, exposed timber details and tall windows. It is a curious little interruption in an already complicated facade.

I photographed the mansion in France, keeping the viewpoint straight and deliberate so the structure could dominate the frame. The first arch is massive and heavy, filling most of the frame, yet every opening beyond it becomes progressively smaller. The eye has nowhere else to go. It is pulled straight through the architecture toward the centre.

I kept the composition deliberately precise because the geometry was already doing everything I needed. Curved brickwork sits against straight vertical walls, irregular handmade surfaces against an almost mathematical sequence of arches. Even the pale floor becomes part of the perspective, narrowing as it travels deeper into Fort Jefferson.

The colour was equally important. Warm browns, reds and muted ochres reveal the variation in the old brickwork rather than reducing it to a single tone. The bridge glows in warm amber light, its traditional Chinese rooflines and sweeping arches standing against modern high-rise buildings and the deep blue evening sky. Below, the calm water turns the arches into complete circles, creating a strong geometric rhythm across the frame.

I kept the composition straightforward because there was very little I wanted to interfere with. The bridge already carried the photograph. Its reflection added symmetry, while the surrounding towers introduced a second layer—the contemporary city rising behind architecture that speaks to a much older visual tradition.

I made the photograph in 2015, and what stays with me is how briefly everything aligned. Water this calm does not remain that way for long. A breeze, passing boat or changing light could have broken the reflection completely.

For a few minutes, though, Chengdu seemed to pause. Warm light, blue hour, traditional architecture and a modern skyline all settled into the same quiet frame.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2015

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Chengdu-Anshun-Bridge-Reflection-Photography-China-1.jpg?v=1791592903
larung-gar-china-buddhist-settlement
Larung Gar Buddhist Settlement Photography | China

Thousands of Red Hillside Homes in Sichuan

At first, the hillside looked almost abstract.

I photographed Larung Gar in 2015 in the remote Sertar region of Sichuan, China, where thousands of small red wooden homes climb the steep slopes around the Buddhist settlement. In this photograph, an old water tower rises from a dense collection of buildings, windows, pipes and rooftop structures, becoming the one simple shape surrounded by layers of urban geometry.

The tower immediately caught my attention. Its weathered cylindrical tank and angular metal support frame stand in sharp contrast to the much larger building behind it, where rows of dark windows create their own repetitive pattern. What looked at first like a photograph of a weathered facade became a small glimpse of life behind the glass.

The window has a strong, simple structure: pale wooden frames, divided panes and a worn sill above a recessed panel of yellow plaster. Inside Toronto’s Hearn Generating Station, beams, platforms and tall rows of structural panels form a dense industrial interior. I made this colour photograph in 2016 during the Luminato International Arts Festival, when the former generating station became a setting for the arts.

I did not have my usual camera with me that day. Even so, the building’s lines and textures were too compelling to pass by. The structure has a strong sense of depth, despite the number of overlapping details.

What interests me is the contrast between order and wear. The steel follows a clear engineering logic, but its surfaces carry darker marks and warmer, weathered tones. This colour photograph brings the city’s street art into a close architectural view.

The composition is busy, but the building gives it a framework. Windows, roof edges and vertical wall sections divide the picture into smaller areas, each carrying its own layers of paint. Red ladders add narrow lines through the scene. Its warm but subdued palette gives it a strong presence, with the farmhouse keeping the wider landscape connected to a human scale.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2010

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/Moody-Tuscany-Farmhouse-and-Clouded-Sky-Landscape-Photography-1.jpg?v=1792022708
forbidden-palace-moat
Beijing Forbidden City Moat Reflection Black and White Photography

Waterside Buildings and Bare Trees Mirrored in Still Water

The water repeats nearly every roofline and branch, turning a row of buildings into a balanced double image. In black and white, the still reflection becomes as important as the weathered architecture above it.

The central roof gives the composition a clear shape, with lower buildings extending to either side. Bare trees interrupt those steady lines, their fine branches appearing again beneath the waterline. Windows, uneven plaster and practical additions to the walls keep the scene grounded in everyday use. I like that the reflection holds those smaller details along with the larger forms.

Monochrome connects the different surfaces without making them identical. I photographed this Canadian wind-farm landscape in 2013, drawn to the repeated shapes and the warm light around them. The colour image holds the field low in the frame so the tall structures have room to define the view.

Each turbine repeats the same basic form, but its position changes the composition. The largest blades reach across the upper left, and smaller sets overlap farther into the distance. That gradual change in scale gives the picture depth. A few trees along the horizon provide a familiar reference beside the much taller towers.

I like the simplicity of the colours. The sky stays close to gold, the field carries darker earthy tones, and the turbines appear mainly as silhouettes. With so little competing detail above the horizon, the angles of the blades become especially clear. Their different positions break the repetition without losing its overall rhythm.

For me, the photograph brings an engineered structure into a spacious rural view. I photographed this exterior at La Bodeguita del Medio in Havana, Cuba, in 2017. The colour image brings together a vivid blue wall, a narrow yellow section and dense layers of signatures and scribblings.

The door gives the composition a firm rectangular shape. Around it, the writing moves in many directions, overlapping across the painted surface. Some marks are dark and bold; others are smaller or paler, becoming part of the wall’s overall texture. Plaques and small practical details remain visible beside the door, keeping the view connected to a particular place rather than a purely abstract surface. The weathered paint and many inscriptions add variation within the blue, so the wall continues to reveal smaller details beyond its first bright impression.

For me, the photograph records the facade as I encountered it that year.
