The photograph presents the Baxter State Bank, an iconic structure along the famous Route 66. The bank, with its red brick façade and stately presence, harks back to a bygone era. Its classic architectural style stands as a testament to the design sensibilities of the early 20th century.
Situated on the historic Route 66, the Baxter State Bank is a relic from a time when the route was the primary pathway for those migrating west. Known as the "Main Street of America," Route 66 harbors numerous landmarks, with Baxter State Bank being one of them.
This Route 66 Baxter State Bank building was the second home for the bank. It originally was located on the adjacent building (right), but grew rapidly enough that by 1908 it needed a new and more prominent locatfamous prominent bank facade in this urban fine art photograph was added in 1910. By 1928 the Baxter State Bank was declared the "Strongest Bank in Cherokee County" and was commonly referred to as the "Million Dollar Bank
During the early 1930s, bank robberies were quite frequent. The famous criminal couple "Bonnie and Clyde" robbed stores in Baxter Springs, and it is said they robbed the Baxter State bank as well.
The Masons were also located on the upper floor of the original bank. Notice the Mason emblem above the doorway on the right in this photo. There isn't a door there; the entrance leads to a stairway.
