Photographing the Signs and Street Life

At this Shinjuku location, I was drawn to how much fitted into a narrow view. Restaurant signs climb several floors above the street. Smaller panels continue into the distance, while people move beneath them. I spent time at this angle waiting for the signs and passing figures to settle into a composition.

The photograph depends on both parts of the scene. The lettering and building edges give it structure; the blurred pedestrians give it movement. I like the way the eye travels up through the brighter panels, then returns to the street. With so much competing for attention, a small change in framing can make a large difference.

I would give this corner time. Watch how people move through the light before deciding where to place them in the frame, and leave enough room on the pavement for others to pass.
